You can't be serious right? He's not charging all the cars to 100%. Can't really take that serious as a max range test. The 3D graphs don't add anything, except look flashy, but they're worse for readability. And the calculations don't match up either. Somehow the Model 3P gets 243 miles without preheat, but 218 with preheat, and somehow both numbers add up to 391km...

Great work, this was very informative and non-biased video and I really liked that you didn't make this as a "Is this a Tesla killer" or " Is this better than Tesla" analysis video. So many videos like that out there and I don't get it, why so many need to find a Tesla killer. Tesla is a great car and I don't think there is going to be a single car that will be a Tesla killer, but since every car brand in the world is releasing EVs these days Tesla will surely loose some potential customers to other brands but they will still be there. I was choosing between Polestar2, Tesla 3 LR and BMW i4M50 I finally choose the BMW since my wife and son thought the BMW was the best looking out of the three 😀 cheers

He didn't mention the optional wheel / tire / brake / spoiler package he has on the i4 m50 that reduces the estimated range by 43 miles (EPA). It may not be intentionally biased, but it's certainly misleading. The base i4 M50 tire package still has wider tires than the model 3P, but would have resulted in much closer range.
@user-lp5ww5bt7w
@user-lp5ww5bt7w 2 жыл бұрын
@@updlate4756 I think it is fair as both model 3 and the Taycan are having their performance trim and wheels as well. Well you can see the BMW, even having the performance wheel / tyres, still losing traction when accelerating hard, but not for Model 3 and Taycan. It would be even worse if the standard tyres are used on the BMW and just spoil the point for choosing the top performance model.
@updlate4756
@updlate4756 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-lp5ww5bt7w That's the only wheel/tire set that the model 3P comes with, and frankly, it isn't exactly up to snuff for track. The BMW's package is, but it destroys daily driving efficiency. Therein lies the biggest problem. For someone who wants a performance car with solid range AND handling, the base BMW tire and wheel set is the way to go. The problem in this video is that the viewer is never told that the BMW has this option on and what it does to the vehicle's range. Hell, I didn't even know until I went to the i4 50's configurator. High performance tires are slippery in colder temperatures due to the rubber they use. In warm temps, they're pliable and sticky. In winter, they harden to something similar to plastic and become slippery. So there's no surprise there's wheel spin. That's why you should never use summer tires in the winter. The standard tires have the option to select all seasons. There's only one performance tire option.

I’m really disappointed with BMW. I drive the BMW i3 which is certainly quirky and not to everyone’s taste but at least BMW were being really innovative. And it is a purpose built EV albeit designed for city use. This BMW is basically a 3 series with some some batteries shoved in and that makes it compromised. Now I don’t work at BMW and I’m sure they have some strategy and that BMW will eventually produce a purpose built EV saloon. When they do I expect it to be great. The i4 is not it yet.
@Maarten_vd
@Maarten_vd 2 жыл бұрын
@@ArbitraryFilmings Yes the Porsche is absolutely the better performance car (Suspension, feedback, interior etc). But these aspects are simply interited from their knowhow and are certainly not EV specific. The EV specific topics are what Will was talking about assumably; efficiency of the drivetrain, batteries and engine. Simply looking at the chargespeed expressed in added miles per timeframe, the least efficient Model 3 (Performance version) is performing best while the car costs far less than the Taycan. Based on this key metric (combination of several EV specific factors) one can say that Tesla is indeed years ahead in EV tech. We can however not really compare them, the Model S was build as a family sedan, the Taycan as a sportscar (so efficiency was not the main focus here) and the Model 3 as an affordable car appealing to the masses. Maybe we will be able to see the real competitor to the Taycan one day (if ever), then we can judge how the successor/facelift of the Taycan will compare to the roadster. These are both build for the same usecase and costs roughly the same. We will see then if Tesla will be able to catchup to Porsche in terms of drivequality (Carbon brakes, better suspension etc). And hopefully, Porsche will bring us an entry car like the model 3 as well? Would be awesome if you ask me.
@5893MrWilson

@@ArbitraryFilmings They are definitely years behind in production volume and Tesla's lead is growing in this aspect. Legacy auto's lack of EV production is why you see massive markups over MSRP for many non-Teslas. Many legacy automakers target production numbers in 2024/2025 that are lower than Teslas 2021 deliveries by a wide margin. Also, Tesla's battery technology, efficiency, and software are far better. I find it amusing that the only cars that can compete with Tesla, cost far more and only accel at a specific niche such as track performance or subjective looks. Overall, for the average buyer, Tesla is way ahead in the things that matter.

The i4 has the 20 inches performance wheels. These drops the range of about 80km. So with the 19 inches aerodynamic wheels the BMW has about 80km more range and of course a better efficiency! Of course you couldn’t change the wheels, but to be fair you had to mention that these BMW wheels are performance wheels and exactly the opposite of being aerodynamic and efficient, also because of the performance tires! Sorry but this creates a very wrong image of the i4, which actually has almost the same range and efficiency as the Tesla but which the right configuration. On top of that the Tesla wheels were aerodynamic wheels. Nevertheless good and interesting video, but for the next time it would be better to be more informed of a car (in this case the i4) before making such a test.

Model 3 Performance comes with 20" wheels that are heavy and not particularly aerodynamic and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer performance tires that have fairly high rolling resistance. I think this is pretty similar to the 20" BMW with high performance tire package that includes Pirelli P Zero PZ4 summer performance tires. I think it's totally fair to compare these. That said, it is nice that BMW offer a wide variety of wheels and tires on this car. Tesla occasionally offers Model 3 Performance with 18" wheels, but most of the time the 18" and 19" wheels are only available on the lower horsepower cars.

@stmo And ? The Model 3 Performance also has 20-inch wheels, it's useless to talk about aerodynamic wheels when it’s not possible. The BMW and Tesla were both tested with 20-inch wheels and there Tesla is better. That's all. In this case, we could say that the Model 3 Performance with the 18-inch AeroWheels would have even more range. Your reasoning is ridiculous

The standard version of the i4 M50 runs on 18 inch wheels, with 502 km WLTP-range. The tested version is equipped with 20 inch wheels with performance package and performance tyres, witch droppes the WLTP-range down to 417 kilometer. This trade-off has to be made as a customers choice, where the buyer choose to accept higher consumption and to loose range over grip. With 18-inch, the BMW will have better range than the M3P, with 19-inch they are about equal, and with 20-inch Performance, the M3P will overrun the bimmer in range significantly. Note: The BMW can also be specified with standard 20-inch (not performance) with a WLTP-range of 470 kilometer.

It just seems to me we throw all of the criteria we used to have for comparing cars out of the window when assessing EVs. I know people are concerned about range, charging speeds and efficiency but at some point, we'll need to get away from that and talk about them as cars and how they feel. There's some of that here but still a lot of numbers which don't tell the whole story. What are customers considering the Porsche Taycan and BMW i4 looking for in these vehicles? Is it all-out efficiency or something else? And what are they cross shopping? I'm inclined to believe that if it is a Tesla, it's the S, not the 3. Maybe with the i4 the 3 might be considered, but probably not the 3 and Taycan.

Had to laugh at your comment regarding the lack of Gridserve on the BMW satnav…………. My Mini Electric that uses BMW’s system shows me all the fossil fuel forecourts that there’s no way I would be able to use to “fill her up” - shows charge places too but is well out of date as my nearest charge hub used to be 4 chargers and it’s shown as that on the BMW map but for almost a year it’s been a Charging Hub with some 44 chargers at it, but BMW’s map is totally unaware of that. My car was built on 2nd Nov 2021 so it’s not like it’s a 5 year old i3……..

This i4 M50 being used here has the upgraded brake, wheel, tire, and trunk spoiler package which shaves off 43 miles of EPA range. (Not sure what that is for WLTP) The 20" tires with 255 mm width fronts / 285 rears are likely having the biggest impact. The base tires are 245 front / 255 rear, so this package increases all around tire width by 80 mm of additional contact. The model 3's tires are 235 mm on all four corners. The i4 has 140 mm of additional tire width contact in comparison. The base tires have 60mm of additional tire width contact compared to the model 3P. Using the base tires on the i4 m50 may have increased its range proportionally by 37 miles, increasing the 198 figure to ~235 miles, which puts it slightly behind the model 3's estimated range without pre-heating. Should also be noted that BMW is supposed to allow for pre-heating when navigating to a charger. Not sure if you could have just selected a charger nearby on the navi to get it to pre-heat. Sounds like another case of an established OEM having an understated range, whereas Tesla has an overstated range. In terms of EPA, this configuration of the i4 M50 (with tire/wheel/brake package) is only rated at 227 miles of range. The model 3P is rated at 315 miles. An 88 mile difference. Yet, your test only has the difference at 45 miles. With the base package the i4 M50 is rated at 270 miles. 45 mile difference. Yet according to your test, the difference may have only been 8 miles. Would have been nice to see what the range would have been if you all hadn't been repeatedly hot dogging it. Obviously it's going to take a lot more energy to speed up the heavier Porsche and BMW versus the Tesla.

@@RSEV The BMW only comes with 19" and 20" wheels. I don't mind you testing the version of the car you had , but transparency about the wheel package would have gone a long way. Doubtless people will watch this video and not realize you're using that package, they won't read the comments, and they'll rip BMW for underperforming their range estimates; claiming that Tesla is superior. Even potentially impacting buying decisions. They'll never realize the base tire package gives it nearly the same range as the Tesla. Anyways.... The BMW i4 (M50) also has the ability to pre-heat (or cool) the battery so that you can reach thr highest possible charging speeds - to use it plan the charging stops in the car's navigation. My experience shows that it will allow for much faster charging speeds and the cost of range is limited.

Yeah, very much so! In the past two months I’ve done quite a few long journeys and the car has been great. My main gripe would be the availability of working chargers. I subscribe to Zapmap which does help but prefer to use the inbuilt idrive functionality. A good example is - where possible I use IONITY as with the 1 year free bmw charge card, you get fast charging for 40p kWh. If you programme the Nav to stop at Peterborough IONITY, it will automatically precondition the battery and you can see how many free chargers there are in realtime. Problem is, you see 2/6 are free but then you arrive and the 2 free ones are out of order! For me, most of the charging is done at home, but just a bit annoying when you do venture further afield and have to do it regularly.

HI Richard, Tesla Bjorn is reporting this new snow mode and in it he explains how the new traction and stability control changes the characteristics. I'm wondering if this invalidates all previous tests and comparisons. Anyway, in benign conditions and temps above zero C the traction control wouldn't engaged and the Model 3 is essentially RWD only. An apples comparison would then be with the Taycan in Range Mode where it reportedly uses FWD only or maybe with the Taycan RWD. The BMW has two PM motors and permanent AWD so wouldn't be a fair comparison. To ensure the Model 3 isn't disadvantaged, do not set the destination charger in the nav system to ensure pre-conditioning is not turned on. This would be a fair comparison.

Did you drove the i4 in Efficient mode? Because then the car is noticeably more efficient, because the i4 has Externally excited synchronous machine (brush motor), which means the car can control the power the machine put out and in efficient mode the engine control give less energy to the machine so it uses less energy from the battery. In this case the i4 would probably have about 20 KWh/100km like the iX3 do as it has the same drivetrain of 5the generation eDrive technology from BMW. Otherwise it a bit unfair in comparison to the Model 3, because as you said there is no efficient mode for it, but in the BMW there is a extra mode to cruise on the highway more efficient.
