The latest Tesla Model 3 Long range "Highland" brings about many improvements and changes, BUT there are a couple of things that are not necessarily better. For me I don't like how the boot (trunk) does not open as far and i now run the risk of banging my head.
Lack of stalks.... will I get used to them?
Are the seats really much better?
What's changed with the interior?
Did you know it now has double washer jets and the screen wash refill is now in a different place?
I find out the above plus all the other little bits and pieces as I try and explore just how much has changed with the latest model 3 compared to previous generations since it arrived in the UK in 2019.
More videos about the Highland to follow so make sure you're subscribed to our channel!

Recieved the Tesla Model 3 HL today (18in wheels). Previously had the Tesla M3P 21. The ride quality is massively improved, not just larger bumps but the smaller ones as well, it's a HUGE difference.

Totally agree with the indicators, I am pretty sure that soon model 3 owners will be known for not using indicator especially agree that taking a roundabout will make it very hard to indicate when taking an exit, since the steeringwheel is turned and the button is hard to find. It’s probably the first time ever that I would skip on a car because of something as simple as an indicator..

Hi Richard, Good review. It will be interesting to see how you get on with the indicator stalks (or lack of) in the coming weeks. For me, at the moment, it would be a deal breaker I'm afraid as I don't want to turn into a BMW driver LOL. The drive being on the screen wouldn't be so bad as you don't tend to use that as much as the stalks. Jim

Hi Richard, thanks for the fast posting. Interesting point about the steering rack speed, I'd not thought of that. No indicator stalks is likely to slow traffic throughput on roundabouts, indicating the exit is a kindly thing to do. Not having a stalk might actually reduce crashes as entry vehicles will have to wait to see what the oncoming driver is doing. Voice command would help some of us as I've said before and would be easy to implement. I'm one of the guys who has already suggested S3XY buttons and possibly stalks. I do get a bit concerned about adding electronics to one of the CAN buses though.

"a kindly thing to do" maybe for bmw drivers but it's in the highway code to indicate when exiting a roundabout or turning left. Cause an accident and it's careless driving at least.

The headrests are angled too far forward, apparently for extra whiplash support in a rear-end collision, but they are acutely uncomfortable for a lot of people as a result. I have removed the head rest and bent the metal rods that hold it in place so that the head rest is more vertical instead of tipped forward (perhaps a 20 degree change in their angle), more like the rear head rests, there are KZbin videos on how to do this properly, makes it far more comfortable and still protective in an accident. Still can't height adjust them though!

Taking away the indicator was daft - they should make it an option to add if they worry about costs. Sometimes the minimalism can go too far and I genuinely think this actually impacts the safety of driving this car. Fiddling about with finding the right button while trying to make a turn will likely result in unnecessary accidents. You don't even need to look with a regular indicator, you know where it is at all times and can just swipe it out of reflex. With a button you have to look down to select the correct one + when making tight turns as stated it may be difficult. The change in boot height is also very odd + i have a feeling the new fabric lining on the car might get dirtier more quickly / far more difficult to clean.. looks like a great car nonetheless. Just strange that some of the basics are overlooked.

Removing the stalks is a mistake. It is another special thing that has to be explained to new drivers, like the interior door releases have to be explained to every new passenger (including the emergency releases; the door releases should be normal chrome levers and work electrically if there is power, and mechanically when power is out: no explanations needed). It will make it harder for car rental companies to rent Teslas. Hertz already bombard you with how-to emails when you rent a Tesla. The cost saving argument is bogus, given the cost incurred to add the purely cosmetic ambient lighting.
@frankoptis
@frankoptis 3 ай бұрын
No it is not a mistake. If you would drive a Tesla car you would know how often we Tesla driver accidentally switch in to the wrong gear "R" instead of "D". Using the screen prevents that error.

@RSymons RSEV Richard… is the seat on the Highland a bit wider on hip area than previous models (3, Y)? As I have some hip problems and they are just a bit narrow on that area (belt buckle level) and pushes me on that area and hurts and I have to keep moving/changing positions… so I was hoping that they get a tiny bit wider there to reduce pressure and more comfortable on longer rides. Hoping to get the new Model Y when current lease expires in 3 years, but if the seats are pretty much the same (apart from ventilated), I’ll have to look away from Tesla… 😢 Thank you!! I'm guessing just like with the volume wheel (if I want to turn it down as I'm maneuvering in a car park with the wheel upside down, I have to rotate it up instead), with the indicator buttons it will quickly become second nature to press the left button when indicating right if your steering wheel is upside down turning around a roundabout. Probably takes a couple of hours at most to start to sink in. And yes, those Mercedes (?) indicator stalks and gear stalks cost a fair few dollars each I'm sure. Much cheaper to have integrated haptic feedback buttons on the steering wheel. My pet peeve would be the Drive/Reverse slider. My brain automatically thinks pull back to go forwards and push forwards to go back, which would be the same as the old gear stalk: push away for reverse, pull towards for drive. Great video btw, good to see them all lined up for comparison and my almost identical 2019 with the better height boot opening for us beansprouts.

How can auto indicate work? Would be very dangerous if you don't take the exit the sat nav thinks you are taking. For example, I might program my destination in, but make a local stop before getting on the road properly. Normally you just ignore the satnav for a bit, then start following it. Would be chaos if it tried to keep indicating.

The removal of the indicator stalk was a deal breaker for me. There are tight roundabouts everywhere here in Norway and these new buttons on the steering wheel are extremely annoying to use. It forces you to look down at the wheel in a critical situation with cars all around you, when your eyes really should be on the road!.. Not good! It's a stupid cost cutting measure at the expense of usability and safety. I've been using this for months in a new model S already and I absolutely hate it. So much so that that I dropped my plans to buy the new model 3 because of it. I just can't justify spending big money on a car that constantly annoys me. It doesn't feel safe taking your eyes off the road while in the middle of a busy roundabout. Nor does it feel safe NOT using the indicators. I constantly found myself in situations where other drivers became frustrated because I wasn't always able to indicate. Another problem with these is that you often end up pressing the wrong button, which can cause some dangerous situations. People think you are going to do one thing, but then the opposite happens.. The buttons don't always work either for some reason. I often find that I have to press twice, because it doesn't register the first time. At least in the model S, but it's the same system so I presume it's the same in the model 3. With a stalk it's pretty evident if you pushed it up or down. That's not the case with these buttons. You have no way of knowing which one you actually pressed, so if you want to make sure, you have to (again) look down at the screen.. It's a really big downgrade to be honest. Many Norwegian driving schools have gone as far as banning the new model 3 because they say it causes their students to fail their driving test in roundabouts. I can't blame them. I've been driving for 24 years, and I've never had problems indicating correctly in roundabouts before, until now. I suppose this works great in the US where there are mostly intersections, and the few roundabouts they do have are fairly large, so it's not much of an issue. But in Norway and most of the EU and the rest of the world which mostly uses roundabouts instead of intersections, this is a real pain in the ass to use.

What does the auto forward or reverse selection do when you are parked on a street parking space and the car in front and behind will likely be the same distance away? I'm hoping it will not make a selection and will make you manually choose.

I really wish they’d included a factory-fitted swivel display. I just had to remove my third-party swivel adapter from my Model Y and going back to the original fixed screen is a downgrade. It makes a huge difference having it facing the driver a little more. Presume the after market kits will still be available for the Highland/Juniper but it technically needs to be removed before the car can be serviced by Tesla, and removing/re-fitting the original mount is a bit of a stressful process. I realise it’s something to differentiate between the S & the X but there’s also a massive price difference between the two let alone the LHD issue in the UK.

The 1.8% on MY is because they want to sell as many as they can before the new one comes. Exactly what happened with the old Model 3 shape before the upgraded was available to order. I wouldn't be surprised if towards the end of the year they will do 0% APR on the MY.

@@rlc2978 LOL - I swapped a 2019 Audi A4 45TFI for a 2023 Tesla RWD. I spent $26,400 (AUD) over 3 1/2 years & 80,000km on services, tyres, brakes and fuel, the car cost $82,300 and the best I could sell it for was $47,000 after weeks on the market- it was pristine and just had new brakes and tyres fitted. So far after 1 year and 20,000 km in my model 3 I have spent, $520 on fuel, $0 services (there are no scheduled services - my neighbour has spent $130 on cabin filters in 3 years in total), $0 brakes and tyres (both of which are cheaper and last longer than the A4). It cost me $58,300 after rebates ($61,300 before), It's a nicer car to drive and the insurance is 20% cheaper. It could pretty much depreciate to $0 and I's still be ahead after 5 years.

The lack of indicator stalks is enough to put me off a Tesla, but then the lack of a gear select and driver display isn't great either, guess it's a personal choice. Car looks amazing though, always liked the model 3.

The Model 3 never had a driver display. When they first announced the Model 3 I didn't like it then when I started driving it I got used to it so quick that now it's not really a problem. Saying that, I do have a small display that shows the speed and goes in the vent. Discreet but for some would be enough if you really need something there.

Great review, particularly as I’m interested in updating from M3 AWD LR ‘21 sometime this year. I’d be interested in comments re the fractious relationship between my iPhone key and my current M3. It will connect media, but refuse to start the car. Also, has the wiper system, particularly the Auto setting, been improved? Fumbling with on-screen controls during a rainstorm that the Auto wiper setting is ignoring, is dangerous. Whilst doubtless software related, I wish Tesla would polish their voice command system. I have a middle-English Australian accent, and I find that often I need to affect an American accent to be understood. Finally, I use Dog Mode extensively to protect my two in our summer heat. Has this changed, and if so, is it better or worse?
@RSEV

Your phone should always work as a key to open & start car. If not, look into it! Wipers still sketchy, so far. Press wiper on stalk (or now wheel) for extra wipe or to bring the wiper menu up and turn off. Voice commands I actually think are about the best. Make sure you have correct command language set (we now have British English which works well). Dog mode seems same. Includes can look at interior camera

@@RSEV thanks for the helpful response. Even as a 3+ year Tesla owner, there are still many hidden discoveries to be made, at least for me. For e.g. are you saying that hitting the wiper stalk button when the wipers are already on, brings up a menu? I missed that. As for the iPhone as a key, I rank it 8/10. Given that that function is 50% Tesla and 50% Apple, I’ll admit that either might be the problem. My iPhone occasionally fails to operate automatically as a door (or boot) key, until I wake up the phone’s display. In the rain, with an armful of shopping, that is irritating. I have recently deleted a duplicate pairing, to see if that was the issue, so I’m now waiting before trying something else. But for your knowledge database, if you are carrying an iPad that has been paired for audio only, as I often do, and the car sees it before it sees the iPhone key, the car (in my experience) may unlock, but then insist on a card-key, to start. The trick is to spot which device it offers to playback from, at the bottom of the screen. If my key problem persists, next I’ll try deleting the iPad. I am seriously considering S3xy Buttons for wipers and Dog Mode, at least, but if you happen to have the ear of the Tesla development team, I’d like to see the following… #1. User trainable voice commands. Allow a user to teach a personalised set of voice commands using their own voice, accent, and even language, and including personalised syntax, to trigger a command set. As an example, you could program your car a command - in your own voice - of “Happy Wife”, in order to bring up heater control settings, or maybe A/C fan settings, etc. #2. Goes hand in glove with #1… An ability to control range settings, once an appropriate dialog has been called up, via the LH scroll wheel. In the example above, “Happy wife” brings up a heater setting dialog box, and then the LH scroll wheel adjusts the temperature up or down. It could be used to control anything that has variable settings, all while keeping eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Wipers, temperatures, both cabin and seat and fan settings are obvious targets, but remembering that scroll wheels already control seats and external mirrors, all this should be doable. #3. At the very least, when one touches the temperature setting, or the wiper symbol, the scroll wheel should be capable of making the adjustment desired.

Rather than putting lights in the door handle which may have been complicated they could have just put a bright led strip behind it and then you would see the glow which would highlight where the door handles are. It's definitely something that 3rd party sellers could offer. But I'm guessing many people never get into the car without any light around be that lights on their drive or street lights.
