Was able to get one for an overnight test drive recently and took it on a 200 mile trip. My only gripes which I think can be solved with future software are the following: - Ambient lighting needs to be brighter or have a separate brightness adjust for it in controls - There needs to be a way to match the new speed limit when in autopilot. On gen 1/gen 2 model 3 you can pull down the right stalk and the autopilot speed will match the new speed or whatever offset one has set Overall a really enjoyed it and recommend everyone test drive it because I heard way too much noise about removal of stalks being an issue but didn’t suffer once when driving.

If it's your first EV do you really need performance? The lowest spec accelerates faster than a 911. At which traffic lights do you need that? I'd suggest that's tooo fast for normal roads. When you test the Standard range, please, please, please can you do a detailed Audio system comparison between the SR and LR. Worried that SR system will disappoint in comparison to LR.
@Paul-ow9dd
@Paul-ow9dd 10 ай бұрын
I can't imagine how the 9-speaker audio in the RWD would be disappointing. I think many of us forget that most of us will either be listening to FM, DAB+ or mp3 in our Tesla. All of these broadcast technologies have their limitations. FM whilst it has a good frequency range up to 15KHz, is subject to interference and a fairly low signal to noise ration due to the vagaries of Frequency Modulation. DAB+ in the UK and here in Australia is dependent on how the broadcasters have divvied up the available bandwidth for the number of audio streams they are broadcasting. So, each audio stream could be encoded as low as 32kbps up to well over 100kbps. Music DAB+ streams here in Australia are typically 48kbps up to around 80kbps, with our classical music stream at 100kbps. Remember these encoding frequencies are well below CD quality and can sound quite ropey if you know audio. Plus, the broadcasters have probably heavily processed the audio before broadcast further reducing the dynamic range. mp3 is all about compromise as well, so has major limitations, but sounds reasonable if encoded at the maximum 320kbps. Most mp3 audio is encoded at a much lower rate, often at a fairly low 64kbps, up to a better 128kbps, but nowhere near CD quality. Even though I've ordered the M3 LR with the enhanced audio system of 17 speakers including 2 amplifiers and two sub woofers, this wasn't really the reason for buying the M3 LR, and I worked in Radio broadcast audio for my entire working life. Both will sound good with a bit more "oomph" and slightly better high frequencies in the LR. But as Richard found out, the bottom end (bass) needed dropping a little, due to the inclusion of not one but two subs.

Mine was delivered last week and agree with what you say, especially about the annoying speed limit alerts and the slight distraction selecting the indicators on roundabouts. However: - I don’t find the cameras accurate for parking. I ended up about an inch away from a bollard the other day that the car thought was 11 inches away, - if you swipe up and down quickly for forward/reverse it doesn’t always register it. So a couple of times I’ve swiped, assumed it’s gone into reverse as commanded and I’ve ended up accidentally moving forwards - my BIGGEST issue, which I think is a Tesla-wide thing, is that on my first long 200mile motorway journey the car slammed on the brakes three times having reduced my cruise control target speed randomly to 40mph with nothing around me whatsoever. Pretty dangerous…. Despite holding the steering wheel more firmly than I would driving my previous car, it eventually locked me out of the lane assist after a couple of warnings. - having come from a car with a heads up display I miss it! - I was told 421miles on the dual motor but it never estimates much more than 370 on a full charge. - Tesla are making a lot of deliveries and as a result the customer service was a shambles and led to a stressful, disappointing experience. Overall I still like it but as my first Tesla I’m definitely surprised and disappointed with some features.

I was thinking one thing they can also use the rear screen for, to make it more useful, is if you're driving with friends/family and you're going somewhere, but they suggest somewhere else to go and you can't re-route whilst driving, they can search the route on the back screen, send it to the main and the driver can either accept or reject the route (just to prevent kiddies from messing with the routing) Plus, I know from experience that parents like to know where they are 😅 having a map feature on the rear screen would be nice And even more, if Tesla are going to the route of having them as taxis, can be useful for passengers as well so they can track the route.

I'm looking forward to giving the Highland a trial. It's going to take a day or so to see if the lack of stalks will bother me. It's not just the indicators or the drive selection, I use the light press on the indictor stalk if I want a quick wipe of the screen. Is there a button on the steering wheel for that? I did sit in a Highland at Tesla in Exeter and I was sure there was more rear legroom? I much prefer the new front styling treatment, its hard to figure out why they didn't look like that from the outset. All that said, any improvement on what for me is one of the best cars available is going to be very good.

Yes you just press the wiper button once for a quick wipe and longer to get into the wiper menu which you then set a manual wiper speed with the left dial on the wheel. Its super intuitive!

Really enjoying the series on the new 2024 model 3. Quick question related to the lack of stalks on steering column: how do you apply the parking brake in static traffic? Is it through the screen or a physical button on steering wheel? I haven't driven a Tesla before so am unaware of that basic function and haven't seen it covered in any videos. Thanks

Great review Richard. You content never gets old. Maybe this has been mentioned before but it would be interesting to do a tyre swap to see how much of the noise reduction is the new tyres. Obviously the increased amount of double glazing and other changes all contribute but I have heard they may be one of the major contributors to the reduced noise. I added some sound insulation to my 22 M3LR and interestingly upgraded underside protection plates (aluminium with a rubbery layer) made the most difference. Still waiting on that Aussie RSEV branch. I can see you in an Akubra hat doing your videos. Like me, your head would need it on our sun 😅

The screen in the rear is super cool, but wouldn’t have specced that if it were an option, as i don’t want my boys with their head in screens, but a wonderful extra somewhat for free! I have over 6000 km with my Highland LR now and it’s almost like you reviewed the car out of my brain - agree with simply everything - from the stalks to the ride, positives and negatives. And hey, the cameraman is absolutely correct: the sides get more dirty than other cars. Here in Sweden, when the weather has been terrible with melting snow and salt, these sides has been dirty like hell. However, not even my small children manage to get dirty from it, because they simply step over it. An adult man should be able to manage this as well 🤣

@@p3tT4n1I used to live in Germany that also has a lot of snow and people usually buy no mud flaps: dirt and snow accumulate there and can rub on the tires; even with mud flaps the sides get dirty and there is no real advantage on cars, just very important on trucks. The sides are also - on German cars - steering enough to have no issues. My German cars were perfect after many years with dirt/snow. Tesla cars though, have a lousy paint job and I would reinforce the car with PPF on heavier situations (countryside or regions with a lot of snow)

Maybe, possibly, if you have a route planned, but how on earth would that work if the driver is actually driving the car. I might be repeating myself here, but a quick test drive last Saturday, confirmed for me, that these indicators are dangerous.

Intelligent speed assistance (ISA) Chime you want to turn off is an EU regulation for new models but is not mandatory in the UK until July 2024. It seems the UK has inherited this EU 2022 law. NB it's for new models, so my 2020 Model 3 does not get this very annoying software - one good reason for not upgrading 🙂 Its also worth pointing out there are places where the car gets the speed limit wrong eg when a side road has a 30 limit sign pointing towards the car on a main road with 50 speed limit - this chime would be extremely annoying if my car did the noise on that road.

The rules apply in the UK and the EU at the same time. The rule as of 2022 was that technology had to be fitted. In 2024 the technology has to be active by default at the start of every journey.

Question, how do you manually activate a once swipe of the wiper in the highland. I have a MY and the auto wipers can be a bit slow or not reactive to car spray. On the MY you just press the end of the left stork, you can do this with out taking your eyes off the road something I think is important when visibility is degraded due to the spray. Can you still do this in the highland, is there a dedicated wiper button on the steering wheel?

The other control I had to stop several times and eventually used KZbin was the autopilot selector now being the right scroll wheel. Great, honest review. I quite like the Model 3 and would love that efficiency and full use of the supercharger network, don't even mind the stalks but why won't Tesla make the model 3 in a hatchback or estate? I know there is the model Y but that's too big, too expensive and less efficient. The other thing is why haven't Tesla introduced V2L or V2G in this latest version. Seems a missed opportunity or is it because they think using the car as a big battery will impact Tesla powerwall sales.

I drove the new Model 3 on Saturday. The single motor version. I own an ICE BMW, and am testing EVs as I prepare to get my first electric car. I’ve tested lots of EVs including BMWs, Audi, Nissan, Smart, Toyota, Polestar and Volvo. I liked some, and really disliked others. But, the new Model 3? To be honest, it was ridiculous just how much better the Tesla was compared to all those other EVs. I mean, the gap is huge. The only reason to consider one of the other brands would be if they were hugely cheaper to lease, which most are not. Some are even more expensive to lease. It took me maybe two minutes to get used to the steering wheel button indicators. And the single motor had all the performance I need. Anyway, I won’t waste any more time with further test drives.

@@arcachuchoI tested the i4 40. Beautifully made, being a BMW. I have just changed from a BMW 128ti to a Model 3 RWD, and we have an X3 as well. So, I am a BMW fan. But, I went with the Tesla over the BMW for a few reasons: Far cheaper on my company scheme than the i4, especially as the BMW misses so much that the Tesla has as standard. The BMW is cramped inside compared to the Tesla, especially in the rear as it’s on an ICE platform. The boot is much smaller than the Tesla’s, and it has no front boot. The base model is slower and has less range than the Model 3 RWD. The 40 has more range and is really fast, but is not AWD like the Model 3 LR. The i4 is a great EV. But, for my needs and budget, the Model 3 RWD was the better EV.

Looking forward to seeing how Tesla incorporate the matrix headlight feature on the new car and possibly as rumoured the existing cars with matrix fitted led lights in those models. Cant talk for the new model but the existing ones do have full movement of the outer led sections with motors when adjusting them so will it be matrix plus beam bending? Do the cars old and new have self levelling? There is a lot of criticsm from some quarters about Tesla Lights but apart from being dumbed down perhaps in spec, when set correctly, (and often on collection they are not) they are not a problem and light up the road well. Anything that can further improve that would just be a bonus I suppose.
