RT mentioned the Final Fantasy vibes early on, but back when I played through the original last year, a buddy of mine half-jokingly described SMRPG as "one of the best Final Fantasy games on the SNES". I think that's a big part of what gives the game its charm, though. It's clearly an old-school Square RPG, but the fact that it was the very first Mario RPG means there's also a lot of early-days weirdness to it. You have a lot of archetypal Mario trappings - starting in a grass "level", then moving on to an underground "level", etc etc - but the weird homebrew enemies, the unique interpretation of the world, the punched-up translation, and the deliberately-unfitting Smithy baddies give the whole thing a really neat style. It's honestly great.

I remember Dan saying during the Mario Luigi SS streams he didnt get far in this game in the past. I hope this might change his perspective a little cause this is a great game that deserves to be remembered.

I played the original game twice and couldn't finish either time, but when the new version came out i shotgunned it, barely doing anything but play it from 8am to 5am. I really hope this new release of the game allows people to enjoy one of the best comedy RPGS ever in a new way.

I love that they added the slight changes to the battle theme as your combo goes higher. The battle theme is so iconic but man it gets stale bc its the only thing you hear... as nice as the new slight change is I do wish that they expanded on it and maybe changed the instruments and tempo based on location. Not enough to be complete departure, but it would be SO nice if it was mixed somewhat different.

I remember watching a run the original Super Mario RPG a couple years ago! Aaaaaaand by that I mean I scarcely remember any of it whatsoever, so it's going to be a delight to watch the remake with a (mostly) clean slate!

The players enter the field through portals or by skydiving onto the pitch, and regularly fly into the sky to launch shots at the goal, and there's Mario Kart style items everywhere. FIFA, it is not.

What a huge oversight to play the same song for every single battle. It's not even a good song , especially compared to some of the bangers in this game. I get it might have been like that in the original, so they wanted to stay true to it. But good lord, does it suck

in this game they at least have reactions to the mario mario entering houses of stranger, but i wouldn't care who it is no matter how famous they are if tehy just entering the house without permission would they get a punch in the face even if it is the mario mario

I hate that one of the worst mechanics from paper mario origami king, the hidden blocks, of which there was barely an indication where they were, wasnt a one time thing. Atleast make it obv something s there Nintendo

You realize that this isn’t redoing them from Origami King, right? The original SNES game had hidden blocks, and this is a very faithful remake, so of course it’s going to include a major feature from the original game.
