It's really interesting that the devs chose the name 'Delilah', famously associated with treachery and/or seduction. I like the narrative significance of that, because she wants to "meet up", knowing that our character is married, and for a majority of the game we don't know if we can trust her. But in the end, they choose to subvert all that (to an extent).

The sense of scale with the area you're in, you can basically explore everything, and your only companion is someone you can't see using a radio to talk to you. The game is gorgeous! It’s worth noting that when you mentioned age, you weren’t late 20s anymore. You were late 20s in 1975, when you meet Julia, but by the time it mentions her drawing plants, it’s 1981, so you’re early to mid thirties then, by the time she passes at the end of the intro, it’s 1985. So that’s late thirties. You’re gifted a typewriter 4 years later in 1989, and that would make you late thirties to early forties. It then states that “Months go by” so you can add a few months to the end of that as well. They spent a decade together and knowing that makes it harder.

Hi Dan. I'm a nurse and have been for the past 2 years (yep, right as soon as covid started). In the beginning of my career and while I was studying (for around 4 years) I worked extensively in nursing and care homes both in my home country and in the UK. I've dealt in dept with dementia and families of people with dementia. I know KZbin is not the place for a thesis or a big rant about it, but I just want people here that are experiencing it in their families or that might experience it that you are never alone. Having dementia or living with a close loved in with dementia is one of those life adjusting situations that many families have to deal with. One thing you have to get to terms with is that there will never be a right way to deal with it. Doctors and friends can only give council, and it's up to you to decide how to move forward. The trick is to not second guess yourself. Dementia doesn't have a cure, and while it slowly robs the loved one from your life, running from the truth is usually not the right path. But going down a mental spiral is also not the way to deal with it. Like all problems that drag on for years and decades, it can take a big part of your life. Living with it, accepting it, accepting that life will never be the same, and that that fact is okay, is essential, the same way grieving is essential to life. You have to accept your choices and accept that you can't change the outcome of some aspects of life, or risk being consumed by situations outside of your control. In the end the best we can do, is do the best for those beside us, and best for ourselves.

Actually, assuming the dnd character sheet was rolled using the typical method of rolling 4 dice, picking the highest 3, the average total score is 73.4. Brian’s score total after racial bonuses is 73, meaning the total of the dice rolls was 70, with the most common racial bonuses being +3. @@cerberusmutt4252my memory is shit but here's what I remember from years ago. a US guy is depressed as hell after his wife develops early onset dementia, with her moving back to Australia to be with her family and looked after. He takes up a post at a firewatch tower out in a national park to get away from everything. He meets his new supervisor and begins to go about his job, occasionally seeing some weird things happening. Over the course of the game we learn about both his past and the areas past, all while growing closer to your supervisor through conversation, developing a friendship and forgetting about what happened. The weird happenings increase and a mystery develops, slowly it is revealed that some guy has been living out here for years, after his son died in a horrific accident and he was the source of the weird shit. Then the game kinda ends. It is very much a "journey" game, all about the path and the emotion, more than the end.

This is a good video, but I think you cut out (or just didn’t get to see, it’s been a while, so I don’t know if it’s a guaranteed dialogue or if it’s optional) one of the best lines of dialogue in the entire game. When you enter Delilah’s lookout, right at the end, she tells you that everyone is evacuating, and that the fire got too big to ignore and that they should’ve dealt with it sooner or something like that. I don’t remember the exact lines of dialogue, but I remember it struck me as such an incredible line because it made me realize that this game, in the end, is a metaphor for dementia, or other life-changing problems that you’d want to run away from. You can spend the entire duration of the problem’s lifespan “watching” it from a distance, pretending you’re doing something useful towards it, but in the end, the fire is still raging and burning acres upon acres of forest. You ignored it for too long, and it became impossible not to notice, almost suffocating. In Firewatch, you aren’t doing anything of any importance. You let your fires rage on, you even give them a dumb name in an attempt to make it seem like it’s not as important, but in the end, it forced you away from your escape.

Small detail I think is totally deliberate, in the cache where you get the new "untapped" radio (which is total BS- a walkie talkie can be heard by anyone on the same frequency) there is a copy of "Three Blind Rats" with the cover torn. Three Blind Rats - Delilah, Henry and Ned. Delilah and Henry blind to what's really going on, going nuts and probably contemplating ratting one another out, and Ned, blind to his responsibilities and the outside world, hiding underground and stealing. All blind to their responsibilities or blind to what's going on. Maybe also blind to what each other really looks like since all interaction is over radio. Torn cover could mean too that the relationship and stablitiy of all three is breaking down also the other two "subjects" both males, where the Rangers Dave and Ron. If you read all the notes and find the hidden spot with the tape, it reveals Dave was homosexual and liked Ron (unrequited love that the report talked about) and the fight in Wapiti was a bar fight in the town of Wapiti where the patrons found out Dave was gay and tried to beat him up.

Henry could also be blind in the sense that he's trying to avoid his wife, trying to be blind to her condition by escaping to the woods, and Delilah could be blind in the sense that she's trying to ignore the truth of her past relationships as was hinted on that program sheet and her response to it. Ignoring things- the fire, relationships, sons and smog -is a consistent parallel in this game, and I like it a lot.

I love this game, it does so much with building such a tense and mysterious atmosphere all while telling an all-too-real story of a man doing his best to run from the responsibilities of his ever more complicating life. The graphics are simple, yet gorgeous, the lighting and sound design is second to none in the genre, and I can't help but come back to the game every once in awhile just to walk about the Wyoming Wilderness

Campo Santo's dev blog has not been updated since 2018, and their Twitter mentions nothing of it, only Firewatch. I get that the owners of the company figured "Hey, I don't need to work anymore" after Firewatch's massive success and the Valve purchase, but I am still sad it happened like that. Hopefully the game gets released eventually, atleast with the resurge of players coming back to Firewatch bringing more eyes to Campo Santo again.

One thing I absolutely love about this game is the start, the fact that it portrays an illness like dementia seriously and how it can affect family members still hits hard. Working in care homes in South of England for the last 5 years, I see family members who visit each day and then less and less as they are slowly forgotten. It can be heartbreaking to see. Sometimes the patient has a moment when they are lucid and they ask where they are and why they don't have their family around, that is also something that is hard to know how to respond. I know it's only a game but RT you definitely had the right mindset of sending the wife to a home to be looked after, sometimes people try to hang on to what they have and can cause a lot of undue pain for the person with dementia. Just my two cents anyway, love your content RT and it was people like you that kept my spirits up with these last two years.

I should say for anyone questioning Javier. And dying in a factory. All factories have some level of danger. In my plant someone was working (I heard the stories and there was a thing in the new apparently. This happened before I started) but he got decapitated because he didn't lock out tag out. Personally, I think Wapititi station was mean to study bears because right before you find Ned's hideout, there's a collar with a tracker attached. It seems that the collar came from the research station but that wouldn't make sense if they were studying soil samples. Also, on the clipboard with the 3 males and 1 female, the first male subject has a note that says "Frequent departure from Two Forks area" so I don't see how that would apply to soil or plants. Despite all this, I can't figure out why that grid is on the ground, maybe the researchers were studying soil along with the bears.

Studying seismic activities effect on the bears. I think the first half of the set up is pretty clever writing- having Henry and Delilah's paranoia have them launch into assuming the notes are about them because the comments about the bears' mating habits were comedically similar to their interpersonal problems. It gets a little messier and distracts even the player from figuring it out for themselves when it throws in Ned's faked research papers that mention them by name.

I really liked the ending, too. It may not have been what people expected, but it fit the theme of the game. This game is about Escapism, and how you can't keep running away. Henry was trying to escape the reality of his current life: Julia has Dementia and his relationship with her will never be the same. Everything about their life has changed in such a scary way so quickly, so he wanted a reprieve from it. That's why he's out there in the Wyoming wilderness. It all starts out pretty good. Seeing the beautiful landscape, away from most other people, and developing a nice friendship with Delilah. Then when they seemingly discover some kind of weird fucked up human research on them and the surveillance, they think there's some kind of conspiracy involving them, the teen girls, and Brian from several years ago. It's a horrific adventure they have to go through, culminating in finding out what happened in the cave... Then the reality kicks in. The girls are fine, what happened at the cave was an accident, and Ned concocted these clues to a conspiracy just so he could keep hiding in the woods. Ned did this so that he wouldn't have to return to reality, and that's pretty sad. So now Henry and Delilah have to return to their reality, leaving the forest behind, else they end up like Ned who can only just keep hiding. It's such a bittersweet message.

Spoilers: No Dan, he didn’t purposely leave the keys for you to find. He left various caches of supplies around the area and marked them with the bear tracking collars so he could find them. He never accounted for you getting your hands on a signal tracker or that tracker being able to pick up on the collars. Him not wanting to hold onto the keys because it’s a reminder of his failure is a legitimate reason. He’s still there after all these years not because he’s trying to protect a secret, but because he has lost all motivation to move on. He’s filled with the guilt of failing his son and the prospect of reentering society without Brian has no appeal to him. The reason he shut you in the cave was because he never expected anyone to find the keys and thus he sees you as a threat to the life of peace he made for himself

The radar was to track the bear collars, Ned used them to track these hidden caches. Delila also is playing on Henry's ignorance of Radio Tech as there is no need for "tapping" radios, all you would need to do is have the same frequency. The Radio also still works clearly underground but suddenly goes cold mear feet further, not staticy. She is the one causing panic and lying to us constantly. Ned's hideout has many drafts for fake "research" papers and notes on his feelings about us.

I have always loved this game. As someone named after a location in the wilderness of Wyoming, having visited several times to Montana and Wyoming, and being raised to appreciate the natural beauty of the American West, it always drew my eyes. The thoughts of watching the sun set over a vast, mountainous wilderness in near total isolation is, simply put, a dream for me. Being able to get away from life and keep watch over the land I hold so dear? yes, please. When I first saw a youtuber play this game nearly 6 years ago, it was a magical thing to witness. I agree with you Dan- you should play what you want- the combat is fun and it's a great game to just get lost in. If you enjoy the game, you should play what you like.
