I knew about the "Coke Soak" for rust on nuts and bolts, but had never heard of using it on stiffened Cosmoline. Thanks for the tip, man!

What do you think about White Vinegar instead of coke? I tried it once on a bolt for my Mossberg, it ate the rust and left the finish.
@Pavia1525 Жыл бұрын
Best way to clean surplus mags is to soak in very hot water and some Dawn. Disassemble and repeat. The cosmoline and gunk will dissolve. Then wipe it down inside and out. Dry in the oven. Lube the whole mag, wipe down, and reassemble.

How about the interior of the mags? I have rust inside the mags, rust on the Spring, the follower and the base of the spring plate. I did the Coke wash but still have significant rust inside. Do you have any suggestions? The outside turned out really nice, thanks for the tip using the Coke. 👍

Try using a tooth brush or a brass brush to knock off the rust I know this is late af but better than ever
@MidwestMisfit9 жыл бұрын
If you let the magazines sit in the coke longer you will actually convert the rust. The phosphoric acid in the cola will convert the rust (ferrous oxide) to a stable compound (ferrous sulfate). Then you'll never have to worry about those same spots rusting again. Consider it poor mans parkerization.

I left mine in the Coke for several days. I have rust on the interior of my mags still, it's very difficult to remove.

@@richardselby1711 Would you recommend taking out the springs first or did you just leave them in the coke fully assembled? I have some surplus mags with light rust & don't feel like taking them apart for a deep clean.

@@LateGrave I pulled the springs, I had some rust on all of them. I used some emery cloth on them after they soaked and soaked them again. It worked really well.

Shoot some silicone spray on the inside of the mag body. Keep it from rusting and help the follower move slicker.

Someone else mentioned this, but they thought the followers were plastic for some reason. - But will your steel knife point still not damage the steel followers? As far as I'm aware, steel can indent/scratch steel. I won't deny that your knowledge might be greater than mine, but you weren't exactly gently pressing - that was direct stabbing.
@RTTGunsGear2 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely steel can damage steel. Depending on various factors of course. My question to you would be, what difference does it make if the follower is scratched or even gouged? 29 rounds in the mag will still stack the same. I supposed if I did some serious bending or denting to the follower, the last round might malfunction due to nose diving or something. But I seriously don't understand why people are fixated on the whole follower thing. A scratch..hell...massive scratches...won't effect a thing.
@wyattthealchemist2 жыл бұрын
@@RTTGunsGear well I'd imagine they're pretty robust, and I don't doubt at all that they'll still function. My concern is that gouges and other techniques that remove material from the mag would act as stress propagation points or as a focal point for rust, as it's opening up the bare metal to the air. You can remove rust of course, but removed metal is permanently removed. Can't get that back. Wouldn't affect function in the short or even decently long term. However ideally, unless it forces you to really go out of your way, it makes sense to use a tool that wouldn't reduce the life of the mag. Especially in this case, as I'd imagine there are plenty of sticks around or some sort of kitchen implement that's easily grabbable, would do just as good of a job, and couldn't possibly remove any material. Edit: sorry that everyone keeps bugging you about it though. I'm sure that gets annoying. They're your mags, you treat them how you'd like.
@RTTGunsGear2 жыл бұрын
@@wyattthealchemist what do you think removes more material? Removing rust? Or a scratch? I mean, you seem like a reasonably intelligent person. Or at least you know how to use some $10 words properly. Use a wooden spoon handle for all I care. But it still seems like you're focused on a non-issue. By the time the scratch I put in the follower comes back to haunt me, the rust will have come back and likely made the mag inoperable anyway. And, just to add to the long term effects of this... I still use these mags without issue 7 years later.
