Did you notice that Hama's style was a lot more violent than the Waterbending we've seen from others? She specifically froze the water on her nails to use as darts and slashed that rock into pieces, which I think was an indicator that Hama still wasn't what she seemed. This was a good episode, not only because of the scarier undertones, but it showed that it's not only people from the Fire Nation who are bad. We've now seen villains from all three nations. Though to be fair, Hama is only the way she is because of being a POW and being forced away from her home.

The Southern style IS more violent than the Northern style. The Northern style is more reactive and defensive, while the Southern style is more offensive.

Actually, there are many episodes before this one that shows that not all the people from the Fire Nation are bad.The Jet episode in the first season, to some extent, shows this exactly as Jet is an extremist and thinks that all the people from the Fire Nation are bad. Also , the Episode where Zuko went to this town and the poeple were harrased by Earth Kingdom soldiers, and there is also the episode where Aang wants to control de Avatar State and this guy from the Earth Kingdom threatens to bury Katara in the sand if he did not managed to do it; plus, Long Feng and de Dai Li are also an example. Not to take the merit from this episode, it still is creepy as fuck.

I think Katara was crying because the writers are likening this to a loss of innocence, so to speak. It's like if a kid is forced to kill someone and then feels bad about it. For a kid (and some adults) just understanding your capable of causing such pain is devastating. Meanwhile, I'd find that shit amazing. Its a person by person thing. XD

Such a dark episode... Fitting that this was a Halloween episode! For a one time antagonist, Hama was a pretty fantastic character. As we saw, she wasn't always this way, but because of war and how the Fire Nation treated her and her fellow tribesmen, she was warped into this person. It's pretty sad to see honestly, how someone could turn so resentful that they start to do onto others what was done to them. Hama was basically Jet but worse and to the point of no return. Despite Hama being locked away again, she still essentially won in the end. She laid out her terms, which was to bring another bloodbender into the world, and she succeeded. That's why Katara cried in the end. She not only fulfilled Hama's twisted wish, but because waterbending is a part of her, this "evil" technique is now a part of her. She was forced to learn a technique that she never wanted to learn and can never unlearn now. To say the least, it's pretty traumatizing. It's also why I've always saw this episode as a loss of innocence, because it's like Katara was tainted because of what she had to do.

The fact that the Firenation really felt threaten by the idea that the southern water tribe was stronger than the fire nation predicted made them feel inferior. So the fire nation went through and capture and wiped out the last water benders of the southern tribe. But Hama survived by perfecting water bending. It said leads to another point on how benders operate. Water benders together can persevere anything and are strong while United. Fire benders have great defense and have the drive to achieve and conquer what they want. Earth benders are strong together and strong alone, but while under pressure there have alot of Hope and can survive under the most heavy pressure no matter how long or hard the pressure is. Airbenders are a wise and peaceful people that are very isolationism. But besides this this was the craziest waterbending ever. Keeping a open mind youd realize There is water in our air if you think deeply about it. And it amazes me how toph was the only one who wasn't scared by the story, that shoes how fierce she is. She sat there by her self while Katara,aang,sokka and Momo were trippin. Also not all fire nation soldiers are bad,at the end of the day they are normal people. Sons,daughters,husband's, father's,uncle's,brothers, mother's,cousins who have families and they just doing what they are told. And if you they don't they'll probably be killed.

* The name "Hama" is similar to the Greek word haima (αίμα), meaning "blood", which is appropriate as Hama was the inventor of bloodbending. * Hama was one of the few Water Tribe members not to have blue eyes, as hers were gray. * Hama appeared to have a light skin tone, which is unusual, since most people from the Water Tribe have a bronzed-olive skin tone. * Hama was briefly mentioned by Kanna in the movie adaptation, The Last Airbender, as being the last waterbender in the South Pole until the Fire Nation came and took her. * Hama was the first villain in either series to hail from the Water Tribe, but was the only one known to hail from the Southern Water Tribe. * Hama was the first known waterbender that bloodbent in either series, the second was Katara in Book Three, and the other three were Amon, Tarrlok, and Yakone in The Legend of Korra. * The puppets that Sokka found when he was snooping around Hama's inn were made by her to look like her prisoners. * Hama is the first known waterbender to disguise herself as a simple Fire Nation citizen. However, unlike Katara, the second known waterbender to do so, Hama did not change her hair style to a top-knot, but merely added a Fire Nation headpiece. * The Fire Nation ship that Hama froze is the same one that Aang and Katara would board later after going penguin sledding.

Blood bending is meant to be seen as being just as bad as rape. You're reaching inside of someone to make them doing something against their will, it's a massive violation which is why Katara felt bad about doing it. I understand where Hama came from but in a way it's like letting the harshness of the world make you a harsh person as well. But yeah, water is a very powerful element and when you look at the chemistry aspect of it, waterbenders could potentially be the strongest benders in the world. Airbending could be too which is interesting when you think about how the show makes waterbenders and airbenders more calm and peaceful people compared to fire and earth that are more outwardly offensive elements.

@DecimoKing

I honestly don't think bloodbending is as bad as people say it is. It's not like you're brainwashing them to do something, it's more like you're grabbing their arms and legs and yanking them around. I also don't think it affects the victim that much either, other than it feeling "weird." I agree that water is an op element, in the right circumstance. My one problem with it is when there's no water, you're almost powerless, which makes it even more cool to see Hama's way of getting around that problem.
@mercistephens5802
@mercistephens5802 5 жыл бұрын
@@DecimoKing Bloodbending is nothing like just "grabbing their arms and legs and yanking them around". If someone just grabs you, you can fight them back. If someone bloodbends you, you can only fight back if you're a master waterbender or the avatar. And do you really think that if someone takes away your agency like that it wouldn't fuck with your mind? We control our bodies so easily we don't even think about most functions it does so if that suddenly stopped you don't think that would fuck someone up mentally and emotionally? Bloodbending is rape and terrible.
@Axxidous
@Axxidous 5 жыл бұрын
I agree in the world of Avatar, but if it were any other fictional series I wouldn't see Bloodbending as all that bad. You're taking away someone's free will but at the same time, of someone falls off a cliff, you can catch them by blood bending them. You can make them dodge an attack. You can make them fight back an opponent if they're typically defenseless on their own. You can probably make them fly. Correction. You CAN make them fly through the air. I forgot we already saw this.

This makes a lot of sense. Though, I don't think it made sense for the firebenders to take prisoners the first time, either. Unless they were making them do manual labor, having them sit inside prisons all day every day not contributing anything just seems like a waste. But if they had killed all of them the first time, this great episode wouldn't have happened.

@@13zomi All because the world of Avatar is too childish and not thought out beyond some events. If we take Germany and the second world war as an example, we will see a huge number of deaths in camps and the killing of people. In this anime, all people are cheerful and healthy and at any time make an escape from very flimsy prisons.

But tbh think how much that would hurt. Reaching in someone and bending and Manipulating their blood, that’s probably why Katara was crying because she knew how much that hurt her and didn’t want to do that to another person

This does raise a certain question about blood bending. This episode implies that Hama was the first person to discover that blood bending was possible. Yet later on in The Legend of Korra, we learn about a water bending criminal named Yakone, who developed the ability to blood-bend without the help of a full moon. So how did Yakone ever learn about blood bending existing if Hama was taken back to prison and if Katara presumably never told anyone else about blood bending existing?

i see alot of people saying waterbenders are the strongest. maybe, maybe not. it depends on the point of view. Lets take airbending into consideration. how do you fight when your lungs are forced to expand and contract instantly. If a waterbender can control the blood inside your body, why would an airbender not be able to control the air inside you. Also bloodbending is only possible when a waterbender is at their peak. ie Full moon.

Each element has advanced perks. Makes it tough to choose which element you’d like to be. Water-ice, blood Air-flight, asphyxiation Earth-metal, lava Fire-lightning, combustion Which would you choose? 🤔

Bloodbending could be used in a whole different way. Katara could bend her own blood to assist in movement or fly

We have now seen bad firebenders, earthbenders, and now waterbenders. Every bending nation and tribe has potential to be evil and seek to hurt. Hama is obviously related to Water Tribe because of her eye color. I don't think she would have been able to be incognito in the Fire Nation capital. She should have been maybe 30 because she was captured as an adult I think. If soldiers started dropping in a big city, causing a disturbance, she would be found quickly under Azulon or Ozai's rule. Soldiers disappearing only on a full moon and it is common knowledge that waterbenders are powered by the moon? That's not smart. If you kill someone despite it being a defense mechanism, it still messes with your mind. You killed once and you don't have to do it again but the first time would haunt you regardless. Considering that we have learned that bending is tied to your spirit, emotional, and physical being Katara should feel sick and violated. This technique is basically a part of her now whether she likes it or not. She can't get rid of her bending.
