After buying a 4K monitor, my GTX 1060 6GB couldn't handle games at the new resolution anymore (although the Resident Evil remakes ran decently on medium settings). Back then, I wanted to get a 4060, and thank goodness I didn’t have an extra $30-40, so I ended up buying a 3060 12GB instead. God saved me from that questionable purchase. Later, I found out that the 4060 ideally requires PCIe 4.0, which, of course, I don’t have :). Although the 3060 is designed primarily for 1080p gaming, it handles 4K remarkably well in games with proprietary engines, as opposed to those built on UE5

I'd have gone for a 2080ti second hand IMO - anything slower is going to be really ropey in the future for 4k , and you still have DLSS. Ideally a 3080ti/6900XT on the second hand market is where I'd start. You might get away with cross gen games but for new stuff the 3060 will need a lot of dlss.

i think back in the day before HD, vram wasnt as big a deal as it is now, with everything going 4k and sometimes 8k textures, 16gig of vram will be the minimum for 1080p gaming, 24gigs for 1440p gaming and 32gig of vram for 4k will be the standard. PS6 and next xbox already rummored to have 32gigs.

My hypothesis for why games are so VRAM intensive nowadays is that, instead of using game assets, specifically made for games and optimized through LODs and shader tricks to mask any repetition like in older games, the assets used now are all photogrametry assets, passed through a very shallow optimization process that simply reduces the poly count and the texture resolution. The problem with that way of doing things is that each asset has unique textures that can't be reduced too much before becoming too low fidelity to use, where as before, a single texture could be used for all/most of the rocks in the game and clever tricks would hide the reuse while still looking good. Cyberpunk 2077 for example, reuses a lot of textures combined with shader tricks to make them seem unique, and it still looks great.

That is not new, but we are now getting games that started development years ago with the ps5/xboxX as the basis, texturing requirements have to go up, no way around it. It is always like that.

You're 100% right (I've been developing PC games now for going on 20 years). Though to be clear, this is mostly a problem with AAA games, not really indie games or stylized games for the most part (unless an indie game has an inexperienced developer of course, as they won't be knowledgeable enough to understand atlasing, tight UV packing, trim sheets for texture reuse, etc). Modern AAA games are absolutely obsessed with using photogrammetry assets and their textures can almost never be used across multiple objects. So every different tree and rock is using its own texture map (and even if they're atlased, they're not actually sharing the same data so at best they're still each taking up unique space on the UV map). Gamers also often point out how Japanese games have such small disk space requirements compared to American games, and I think it's largely because (from what I can tell, playing games like Elden Ring) it's far less normal in Japan to use photogrammetry. They're still using a lot of bespoke assets and lots of the great tricks for reusing common surfaces but in ways 99.9999% of players won't be able to see (like building entire complex architectural pieces out of a few simple trim sheets).

ID basically invented virtual texturing, why would they not use them? You can even see the textures loading into VRAM in certain scenes with texture pool size on medium.

The RTX 3000 series (on the desktop side) was truly one of the most confusing and inconsistent generations Nvidia has EVER done. And with the RTX 3060 having more VRAM than multiple higher tier GPUs the RTX 3060 ti and RTX 3070 (ti) with 8GB VRAM and the RTX 3080 with 10gb, I think it was the biggest ‘mistake’ Nvidia has ever done. However the RTX 3000 laptop GPUs were far worse than the desktop ones since most of them lacked any VRAM upgrades from the RTX 2000 series making them age very poorly.

I run it at 950mv 2010mhz memory at +1000 power limit at stock 100% (some may need to increase this) With this, i've reduced wattage by around 30-50 watts max load. So my temps stay cold enough to maintain 2000mhz, instead of the 1850 people tend to have on demanding titles. On average I get 4-12 fps more.

Lol no its not. It's a slow card. 3060 is about the same performance as 1080 Ti or 2070. Usually the 60 card is supposed to compete with the previous generation 80 card. The only thing it has going for it is a lot of VRAM, which doesn't mean much. Since while you won't run into VRAM issues you are still going to be getting low FPS because the card is slow and games are gonna get more and more unoptimized. Also on 8GB cards like the 3060 Ti, 4060 etc you can just lower the VRAM settings in this game because it only affects the streaming of textures not the quality.

Digital Foundry complained about the shadows as well as the pop in. Crazy how bad the shadows look for how much of a VRAM tax they incur. They found you can edit the config file and push the texture pop in further, and I don't know why it's not an option in the game menu. They also found that turning the hair quality down, you might get a more consistent frame rate in the Vatican. As for shadows... the path tracing should take care of that... if it doesn't bring your GPU to it's knees.

Meanwhile I think the issue of NVidia is, that they cannot really good manage the differences between their products (4000 and newer), because the even lower slower cards are (if the VRAM usage is ok) fast enough for 4k. Maybe in these times its enough to have (e.g.) "only" three cards xx60 with 16 GB VRAM, xx80, xx90. But if this (as e.g.) is really doable because of manufactoring..., I do not know?

I don't think disabling the cores will yield the same results as correct me if I am wrong but I think by doing so you disabled some on one CCD and some on the other which is inferior to a single CCD chip. Still enough for a 3060 but imo it would be better just leaving the cores enabled and from what I know only one CCD has the 3D cache.

Great optimization, running it on i5 12600k and rx 6800 xt and 32gb ddr4 3600 at 1440p native with everything maxed, always 60+ but I capped it to 60 for an insanely stable frametime graph. Also its on linux with proton so dont know how would it be on windows. I also had to use amdvlk driver since there is an issue with using the standard mesa radv version which would perform even better, that will get fixed soon hopefully

The 5fps thing could be a bug. As many people experience fps drops randomly from just changing settings. Happened to my rtx 2060 6Gb. I had 40-60fps on low 1080p and suddenly it gave me a measly 10fps in native 1080p and dlss didn’t do shit for the fps. It’s kinda broken. Still 3060 is way better than 4060.

Hope you do a video of this game with the RTX 4080 Super with Ryzen 9 7900X and 32 GB DDR5 and 2 TB SSD with another one 2 TB SSD too so it is basically 4 TB at this point with both of them together, I just bought it and are waiting for it to be sent to me now :) Just wanna see how it runs in this game with very ultra settings with 4K res. Just bought a 4K monitor with 240 hz too for it and a new keyboard ;) been saving for a long time and hope it is worth it which it should be for the price I bet.

Nvidia is just trolling gamers that don't buy a 500$ or more GPU honestly. 12 GB on the 3060 vs 8 GB on the 4060. They clearly don't care about them even though it is a big market. I would not be shocked if the 5060 still has 8 GB and becomes obsolete after a year and a half just like the 4060.

@ibrahimeroglu9987 Not really. The problem with Radeon cards is that they are not that much cheaper than Nvidia and the feature set is weaker. The 7900 XTX is a lot cheaper than the 4090 sure, but its not to the same performance level, its more in line with the 4080 Super which is not that much more expensive than the 7900 XTX. For Radeon to destroy Nvidia in sales, they have to come in with a better product entirely that is much cheaper, offer better driver support and improve their feature set (better ray tracing, improve fsr, improve their encoders etc) . FYI, the 3060 sold more than all the Radeon cards combined last year so it shows you how much catching up AMD has to do.

In videocardz, you can see RX 8800 XT = RTX 4080 Super at $549-599 also RX 8700 XT would have 16GB and it will compete to RTX 4070 Ti Super for $449. You are right about software and support problems in AMD but you can think the prices like, for example, I personally have been using RTX 3060 for 3 years, if upcoming series would be much worse like RTX 5060 = 3060 Ti, I won't buy that and will use another 2 years. On the other hand, RX 6800 can be found like $349. In my country, I could find RX 7700 XT for $429 with taxes. So, choosing AMD for 4 years and selling them is much sense than giving RTX 4070 for $599 with taxes. You can save $170 and even though RX 7700 XT would be sold for $250 in 2 years. Besides, RTX 4070 would be sold as $300 in 2 years. If you are finding best prices for these GPUs, go for them.
