Electrical engineer here. I believe I know why your performance kept dropping at higher voltages. If I'm correct, it may also be implicated with some of the crashing that people have been seeing. TL;DR: The GPU core is current limited (not necessarily by the VRM). Increasing core voltage makes this much worse. The job of Buck converter (1 stage VRM) is to step voltage down efficiently. However, conservation of energy applies. If the power into a 3090's VRM is 350 Watts and it is 90% efficient, it can only supply about 315 Watts to the core. At 950 mV, that means the VRM is limited to output 332.5 Amps to the core. Now, take the Titan RTX with a 280 Watt power limit at a GPU Voltage of 0.96 (GamersNexus review article). With the same 90% VRM efficiency, the power supplied is 252 Watts. At 960 mV, this corresponds to 262.5 Amps to the core. Due to architectural differences, Ampere has at LEAST 1.25x the number of transistors per CUDA core (on average, see AdoredTV's CUDA Evolution video). Factoring in the CUDA core count increase from 4608 to 10496, a CONSERVATIVE estimate for the total increase in transistor count due to CUDA cores is ~2.85x. Current supplied by the VRM should increase proportionally with CUDA transistor count, since most of the energy is used by the core. This means, given NO node shrink, we could expect the 3090 core to pull over 2.85x the current from the VRM when all CUDA cores are fully loaded. This poses a bit of a problem, since the shrink to Samsung 8nm wouldn't have even reduced current draw by 2x. Even if we do assume 2x, then feeding current to all of those cores would take ~373 Amps from the VRM. As a result, at 350 Watts and 950 mV, the 3090 needs 12% more current to fully utilize its 10490 CUDA cores. Increasing the voltage just decreases the current, since Current = Power / Voltage. If you want to feed these GPUs, you need to really find the sweet spot for voltage. Increasing it will decrease your usable cores at high frequencies while decreasing it may reduce stability.

This is why there are no Ampere cards available - they're sending all of them to reviewers.
@bdhale344 жыл бұрын
Yeah they sent them to "reviewers" to show the boxes to push hype a few days before being allowed to tell everyone how weak the cuda cores are on these new cards. At worst the 3080 has 2x the FPU32 units at best it has 4x the FPU32 units of a 2080ti. With a mixed workload the 3080 has 2x the FPU32 units as the 2080Ti has when it's doing a pure FP32 workload. In a pure integer workload it's also got twice the available units of the 2080ti, these cards are horrible performance per transistor vs every other generation of cuda based card from nVidia. And the "reviewers" are still hyping them to no end.

The cards that go out to reviewers (which enables reviewers to do their job) don't affect the stock that is on the market for the general public. Nvidia (or any other company that sends out free products to professionals for review) probably already had a number of these cards set aside for this exact purpose. I get your frustration because I'm also a bit annoyed that I can't get one yet, but that is more because Nvidia messed up, not because Jay or the other media outlets or websites got a load of cards - that was going to happen regardless of whether there were enough cards on the market on launch or not. On the bright side, by the time we normies get a chance to buy a card, drivers will be a bit more mature, some issues will be worked out and we will also get to see what the competition is doing. So really, waiting a few months is generally better for us as consumers than being early adopters 🙂.

Jay is an inner volcano of joy in this video because of the powerful hardware he gets to build and test. The result is that he is exploding with happiness knowing he has two beastly 3090s in his hands, a great sense of humor, blended with an extensive background of technological knowledge, and a bad ass man filming behind the camera. Its an excellent duo of synergy between the two. Jay is in a state of flow, a great overclocking expert, to bring education and enjoyment to us hungry hardware enthusiasts.

I assume you're joking, based on the ":P" part. If you're not... just.. no. If you rounded up every reviewer that actually got sent a card, you're maybe looking at 30-40 cards total that were sent out to influencers/reviews. They didn't ship only 50 cards across the rest of the world, it was thousands upon thousands. But almost none of these cards were part of the stock shipped out to the public. They go from the AIB straight to the influencer/reviewer. So they have little to no effect on the availability of a product that is being produced in bulk now; and just has to leave the factories in Asia to the retailers in the rest of the world.
@rikachiu4 жыл бұрын
@@ExarchGaming Obviously I am joking, but half joking. Do we even know how many 3090s made it to the wild? 40 cards just to do SLI videos where only .000001% of 3090 owners are going to do seems kind of meh when cards are in SUCH limited supply, yes?
@ExarchGaming4 жыл бұрын
@@rikachiu Not really, no? These cards were not from the stock going to consumers, they're sent directly from the AIB to the reviewer. 40 cards is a generous estimate tbh, the amount that were sent out were likely in much more limited quantities. We know that all of the AIBs are in full production mode for their cards, and they are flowing in to stores, Lets say Nvidia did a very limited run of cards, 1,000. (these are founders editions) they sent out 1 or 2 to *some* reviewers. People like UFD Tech I don't believe got one, among several others. Many reviewers had to buy their own card. So, lets go with that completely completely generous estimate of 40 cards being sent out to reviewers (from FE) that's 4 percent, 96 percent were either bought by lucky early adopters, or snapped up by bot-laden scalpers. Now, they're getting a bunch of AIB cards, MSI, Gigabyte, Asus, EVGA ect. They're shipping these cards out as fast as they can make them. If you go to Gamers Nexus, you can see I believe how they're made, or at least how extensive the production factories are that produce hardware. The reason week 1 was so hard, was the AIBs were given absolutely no time to fully test their cards, so that caused a bit of a delay, that's nvidia's fault. Infact you can go to Nvidia's website where they address the issue. They had great supply, and their cards are in full production, and have been since august. That gives a potential for thousands or tens of thousands. People who think that influencers or reviewers have any impact on the global supply of these cards are naive, in the most literal way. The world isn't limited to just what you read, or who you know. know what I mean?
@rikachiu4 жыл бұрын
@@ExarchGaming I get it, but there were more than 40 people who wanted this card, me included. According to Bit Wit's video, you had people lining up DAYS ahead of time for 26 cards at the one microcenter in the largest state in the US. So doing something so decadent as SLIing 3090s during such a shortage is kind of meh.

Hey Jay you've talked about EMF interference and how it effects stability. An idea for managing emf could be building a faraday cage. You could put a metal screen or mesh on your a/c shroud. Also a faraday cage blocks outside emf. A test you can try is putting your phone in it. It should get no signal if it's working. P.s. I'm pretty sure brass screening or mesh works best but you could try other metals if brass proves too hard to find
