The thing is if you look at the prices in third world countries or anywhere that isnt US, the cost per frame of the 4070 laptops skyrockets, same scale happens for the 4080 and 4090, being the 4060 the most cost per frame option here, as the other laptops sees a $700 USD increase if you go for the 4070 instead of 4060.ANd spending that much for 8gb vram is not good.

@@_tym3k This, exactly. In any case, laptop GPUs have generally always been much weaker than desktop GPUs. I don't know who would buy a laptop expecting similar performance, even with the laptop GPU using the same name. Nvidia screwed up by not having the "M" at the end of the name (4070M), but at the same time, it's a laptop, it's obviously a MOBILE chip. Have you seen the desktop GPUs? They are 3 to 4 times as thick as laptops all by themselves!

I bought a Legion pro 5 with a RTX4070 on sale for $1500 at microcenter about a month or so ago. The cheapest 4080 i saw at the time was $2700. I had a budget and on top of the laptop i needed to buy an accidental protection plan. I have 2yr old twins at the house. With what my budget was the 4070 was the best i could purchase and it added just a little extra future proofing. Regardless i was using it to replace my desktop i built that was still rocking a GTX1070. So a nice solid improvement. Best thing i did was pester the salesman into giving me a 2yr accidental for the cost of a 1 year.... don't be afraid to ask.

just depends on how much GAMING on the go you really need i mean the 4080s is 999$ now...and adding a board/chip to it for gaming seems pretty viable budget wise...while being able to get a high chip/tdp laptop purely for work/tasks. Which can cost around how much the majority of 4080 laptops are going for w.o ever having to worry about that expensive mobile system dieing/failing etc or needing to be re-pasted/checked yearly. If you can manage lower settings or primarily play multiplayer games on low for higher yields/frame bufer and input latency a sub 1000$ gaming laptop can do those requirements. While having a AAA/MAX settings system at home. The bigger issue is your monitor/budget once you have a system that good. IMO that level of heat and some of the CPU/tdp for pure cpu workloads as well as gaming/duel load scenarios has me worried about long term system health or high uptime gaming. Over the course of 2-3 years. Its something thats always had me against paying 2000$+ for a laptop. Or gimmicks like full rgb, or "monitor hz" on panels bc so many games/settings dont even yield the highest HZ viability and PVE titles or AAA games are largely carried by adaptive sync as it is. FWIW shooters/fps on 15" or a laptop in general is MOOT in multiplayer an instant handicap...and for PVE/AAA theyre better off carried by adaptive sync at 90-120fps as it is. Even a non 4080 setup YIELDS so much more budget for external monitors/peripherals type c chargers etc. If you absolutely need a laptop as a SOLE solution. The way i see it unless youre EARNING from your laptop or its a large priority/aspect i cant advise a 4080 laptop. Or if ppl have expendable income then go for broke if that suits your sense of security with your investment. Its NV's way of insuring flagship/sales...and mitigating re-sale value of their laptops if the gap is so large....the next "generation" 5060 or 5070 will be noticeably better...while making the 4080 still look competitive to newer generational implementations.

@@panjak323 I meant if you want to upgrade in this gen, and you have 3060 it makes sense to go to 4070 at least because you won't receive noticeable difference between 3060 and 4060. And talking about the price, I 100% agree that current gen has insane cost per FPS, as well as overall. However, when you upgrade from 3060 to 4070 lets say, what stops you from selling your 3060? After all you will get 4070 for around 1k or even less. But of course, my personal choice wait for RTX5000 because RTX4000 is a catastrophe.

The new series laptops are really disappointing. The performance increase is minimal compared to 30 series laptop GPUs. Also, the new 7000 series Ryzen HX cpus have worse battery life than the new intel CPUs. I love Ryzen 5000-6000 series for the battery life. As such, I will be buying a 2022 Lenovo Legion 5 Pro Ryzen 6800H RTX 3070ti. As the performance is only about 10% slower than the new laptops for anywhere between 400-600 dollars cheaper and with nearly double the battery life. I think the 2022 gaming laptops are better than the 2023 laptops.

Here in Norway the 4080 laptops cost like 4000 USD, the 4070 cost like 1800-2000 USD. Then I manged to score an returned (remanufactured) 4070 Omen 16, 2023 model with 13th gen i7 for 1300 USD. The NVME was a bit small at 500 Gb and RAM was 16 Gb. So I put in a 1 Tb 980 PRO NVME that I had laying around after upgrading my stationary, so now its got 1,5 Tb. I have also swapped to a good 32 Gb kit. Didnt notice a lot of uplift in 3dmark, but my kid does play teardown, beamNG etc with mods and "creative mode". After he spawns a lot of physics objects, the 16 Gb RAM wouldnt be enough and FPS would be terrible. So now its more suited for messing around. Since he is 6 years old I think the 4070 I got for 1300 USD then is a super deal. OF course had I bought it new, it would have been 1800 USD.. But then spending 150 USD for 32 Gb ram and repurposing the 1 Tb NVME its now a quite good machine I would say.

i own and buy 4070 laptop myself for 2.4K USD (Acer Predator 16) because i could not afford 4080 laptop which way too expensive for me. So far the performance is pretty good on all game i tested. My only complaint that this GPU has only 8GB of vram, which on certain game might be a problem. Though all that said, in my opinion, the 4060 is the most sweet spot for 40 series laptop in term of performance and price.

Based on the average 20% performance difference, that’s maybe two more years of game releases that you’ll be able to play with your machine, assuming it lasts that long. Given the increased rate of inflation and the slowing rate of performance increases compared to the good ole days, it looks to me like that 200 spent now is probably worth it. The 8gb barrier is tough to predict, but I don’t think it will limit you much at 1440p. At 4k, all the bitching about 8gb is very valid

What I understand from your video is that the main appeal of the RTX 4070 seems power efficiency (min 1:01 - 1:35), which might come in useful for thinner laptops or travelling. When you clip both GPUs at the same performance (i.e. identical fps), then the power consumption of the RTX 4060 can be up to 50% higher than than of the RTX 4070. Correct?

Exactly this. I had both 4060 and 4070 laptops last year. With the latter, you can run slightly better performance with way quieter fans and without burning your table and fingers. Sure, max performance won't be *that* powerful, but having a pc that runs games so easily is WAY more interesting to me. MaxQ editions are always listed separately - but since Nvidia abandoned it for Ampere and Ada Lovelace, so did Notebookcheck. If you expand the charts though, they are quite detailed and show the range (between slowest and fastest samples). Clicking on them shows the laptop model and CPU as well, to isolate other factors contributing to any given result.

I love your videos and used them to pick up a legion pro 5i with 4070. But that is because I live in Japan and going from 4070 to 4080 was 1000$ difference pretty much across the board with how weak the yen is. At that point is is very hard for me to justify the price increase due to the price difference.

Live in Sweden and here the difference were above 700$ between 4070 and 4080. All the other specs was the same so I didn't find it justifiable to take the 4080 and pay so much extra just for the graphics. Using legion pro 5i with i9 13900HX processor. Pretty good machine.

I wish people would focus more on the frame generation aspects on these cards. Because of how limited they are, frame generation only provides an additional 10 to 20 FPS when you're starting at around 60, meaning that it takes your base frame rate down to the 40. I tested it on a g14 with a 4070 in cyberpunk, and because of the lack of GPU headroom, DLSS and frame generation barely do anything to help.

Great video Jarrod, for this budget the RTX 4070 is the way to go, as in my country the 4080 is just way more money. The performance isn't great nor is it worth upgrading from last gen but let's be onest it never is and call it a P.O.S really doesn't help anybody.

I've found the old gen RTX 3060 3070 and 3080 are about the same price as a 4060 4070 and 4080 now. So is it worth getting the older since the run hotter and use more power for daily use? A good 4060 for 800 bucks seems nice. And the 4070 for $1100 or 1200USD. The 4080 prices rarely drop below 1550:/

I picked up a 130w Lenovo Legion 5, Ryzen 5600, 3060, 1TB storage and 8gb ram (doubled for cheap) off Amazon for just over 700 euros less than 6 months ago, here in Ireland where you can get jack. It was too much of a bargain to pass up. I doubt it is worth upgrading at the moment, but any comparison videos would be cool. Also, any chance of doing laptop deals in the EU market, as it is a tougher place to find bargains with less choice than the US. Great work with these videos.

You can get full powered 4060 in thinnest chassis. 4070 isn't worth upgrading coz it still looses to 3070ti laptop in some games. 1% low is worse for these two laptops than 3070ti due to low memory bandwidth .

The floor for 4060 laptops from a sale standpoint is just a lot more vaible than 4070 options, Where youre looking at a lot more aspects with those price points as far as feature sets, battery size, track pad quality and other aspects to determine which 4070 option to choose over the other...and the CEILING/premium pricing that comes with it. I see a week/window deal for a 13700HX legion pro 5i on costco for 999$ USD. Which also comes with a 4060 1tb drive and 32gb and the 165hz 16:10 panel. This is the sort of "floor" im talking about. An even better deal than past lenovo options with 11th gen 1tb drive 16gb and a 3060 on 1080P which was going for around 1000$ at the lowest and offered around 1200$ often on deal for 1100$ in the past. Considering how the 4060 compares to the desktop variant, the only disconnect to a desktop is the pure TDP/IPC of a desktop cpu and the ram speed/timings of desktop DDR5. But considering the cost 999$ its almost an after thought to consider a "Budget" gaming pc. Other than having a higher priority on cooling potential, and the L cache/IPC/memory/chipset aspects a desktop offers. Outside of having higher needs/priorites from your system centered around those aspects. A deal like this is a suitable upgrade/system/gaming option if someone wanted a SOLUTION now and still wanted to be able to save/budget towards a build in the future/platofrms/gpus generational implementation. Unless AAA titles/maxed settings gaming is a high priority. This sort of setup a 4060 and HX processor with 32gb and a 1tb drive can easily be a "desktop" replacement for most ppl on older gen platforms/systems.

As a former gamer I don't exactly understand what's going on here ? About 10 years ago, my Palit 460TI card could comfortably deliver mid-high performance on all game of the time. I'm not following today's games, but I did catch that the 4060 (the supposed next-next-next Gen of my former catd) delivered 15 FPS on Godof War (a game that I am familiar with from a friend's place) . 15 FPS is a non starter , so what happened ??? The "60" series 10 years ago were the budget friendly cards that depending on the card manufacturer -- delivered a little above what "budget friendly cards" were supposed to. Is this Nvidia (and / or card manufacturers) pushing people to buy higher end cards ? Or did games outstrip the card labeling via demand for performance ?

But the more I look into it, it's seemingly a more toxic relationship between : 1) Companies , specifically Nvidia and it's 'subletting manufacturers' (MSI, Asus, and all the rest who make "their own version" of essentially the same hardware) . 2) "Reviewers" -- something that had turned into it's own culture, and no longer just preforms a review, but had turned into a secondary (or perhaps even primary) advertising arm for products . 3) Buyers (usually gamers) , who , like you said are "willing to pay more" , but who are ... --- and I'm not sure if they know this --- in a rather toxic relationship with #1+2 . Now I used to ba an avid collector of a certain property, and as an adult it took me about 10 years to get to acknowledge that what I didn't really need what I was buying, and that it was ok to scale down and get the same iteration of an item once every 2-5 years, instead of every year -- and I wish High End PC buyers would get on the same train . I'm not asking them to go cold turkey, just that to recognise that they're buying components that should last 5-7 years, and it's ok to buy a new PC every 5-7 years, instead of every 1-2 .

3%- 7% at best, but u are basically getting 2021 performance in 2023 for more money and a feature that will be quite useless in a couple years once the gpu is either out of vram or proccessing power, how tf the frame generation gonna change the 10-15 fps to 60 i wonder? 🤣 that feature is viable for 4090 and maybe 4080 gpus. but what aggrovates me the most is that these greedy manufacturers are pairing every damn 4060- 4070 gpus with a qhd+ display. knowing full well the gpu can't handle that resolution due to vram or memory bandwidth and force u to lower the settings right off the bat, and u can forget about the rt effects as well. they are reducing the laptop's effective life span by 30%- 50% atleast.
