Looking at the 3080 used right now on eBay, I’m finding a bunch around $400 (including a founders edition). Could I build a very good pc around that? Or should I try to future proof a little by going for something in the 40 series (like the 4070 super)

yes it is worth it right now. The 3080 and 6900XT are the price to performance kings right now with some of the 3080s selling for $350 at the moment and the 6900XT (3090) equivalent is selling for $490. The crypto boom has ended for now with the reduced BTC rates and the 50 series will release soon so I would say that the 3080 combined with the i5 12400f or 12600k would be the best for you right now and you could build it for around $750 dollars if you score on a 3080 listing. It is also future proofed for at least a year and you can always sell it for a 50 series.

@@buttergolem8584 Its a great card! Especially for the games I play. I don't play a lot of super demanding triple A titles. I mainly play competitive shooters and jrpgs, so 1440p gaming for me is pretty awesome with the 4070. Right now I have the 4070 paired with a 13600kf and its the perfect combo. but yeah you should probably wait to see if the price drops. The reason I didn't go with a 4070 Ti though is because I don't like those 12VHPWR connectors. I like the fact the 4070 only uses a single 8 pin and is very power efficient.

I just bought my new setup 4070 and i9 12900k 32gb 3200 ram for 1499 just upgraded from a 1650 bru the performance difference is insane bro like im top of the leader board every time. Been using that 1650 for 4 yrs now was kinda wanted to spend a lil possible get a better card since u think it was kinda deal breaker that they werw almost similar but couldnt pass up the deal. They’re so close in almost every benchmark, with the 4070 taking a couple of wins, and the 3080 taking a couple too. If it were up against the 3080 12GB it would be behind in all of them I’d say. It’s a shame, cause I was hoping (before it was released) the 4070 could replace my 3080 12GB with a 10-15% uplift, but that’s clearly not happening now!

don't forget the 3080 has 320 bit bus, the 4070 has only 192 bit bus. 4070 with the same bus speed and cuda cores would crush 3080 and even 3090 in every game

I only have 2x 8pin 12v cables for only 1000w PSU option for propritetry fit DELL 8950. Same for their current 8960. Advised not to use splitters to piggyback 40series cards for their 12pin 12v only adapter! So i can only go upto 3090TI and 4070. That's all.

I went from a 3080 ti to a 4070. Power efficiency is often overlooked because it hasn’t led to any tangible problems in the past. But now gpus draw almost 400 watts, heat up your room and make it loud. The 4070 is silent and cool. Definitely worth it for slight performance loss.

Exactly. Power efficiency is a huge factor for me. No one wants a space heater for a computer. A power hungry GPU will heat up your room and you'll have to crank up your AC/Fans and make even more noise and waste more power. Lots of people hate the 40-series but Nvidia did a great job with the efficiency. Only 1x 8pin power cable needed on the 4070!

paying for a downgrade. a move i would NEVER make. you could've just undervolted / underclocked the 3080 is you were willing to lose performance. you can halve a card's consumption by giving up 15% of its performance.

I have a 5800x3d and a 3080 ftw3 ultra I am bow upgrading until next Gen and only if it's a huge bump above the 40 series and good price and power consumption on top of if the games are needing the new GPUs and the graphics are much better, I don't see games changing so much that they need a 50 series card to run them, and the 80 series has 12gb models for regular and TI. You can get a 3080 12gb and TI12gb also. And they can be had for 300-400 dollars. I just got mine replaced by EVGA this week to a brand new one, might sell it and buy a 4070 for better power as mine 3080 with 450w bios OC to 2250ghz and ram +2200 was costing me over 100 dollars a month to run it and heats up entire house, good in winter bad in summer. And none of use the software they use as a selling point for RTX cards . Only card that would give me an actual upgrade in use would be a 4080 or 4090 and I don't play 4k, I play 1080p FPS games so I don't need a new rig for any reason.

4070 sips power and is cooler than the 3080. I live in florida and have paid the price for not worrying about the power draw. For the cold part of the year it doesnt matter. When its hot a hotter card makes my experience directly worse.

6800xt is a solid choice. At 4k you're gonna be fighting for 60fps in AAA games just a heads up. Personally I would aim for 1440p MAX settings. For monitors I personal like the ones that are like "TV" like ones from Asus and Gigabyte. They each have a couple models to chose from.

to me the extra $100-$200 is worth not having to upgrade my PSU so yeah i save ~100 there, along with the savings of less power vs a 3080 and pretty on par with my 2070RTX. 4070 is a drop in replacement with 30-100% performance increase and will make my storage very happy with AV1 encoder :-) I think adobeCC supports it now too, if not it should soon and obs does so.. yay! sorry AMD, you got some good stuff but the extra features just takes the win and worth the "little" extra I'm one of the few probably not OVERLY upset at the prices. the cost/performance is pretty on par with the other mid range cards plus has those extra goodies. DLSS, AV1.... I do find it interesting that AMD is able to keep their costs down. IMO (not having a card yet): If you are more worried about the cost "out the door" another model/brand may be the best route.. but as a whole package using those extra goodies i'm having a hard time saying no. I just noticed the average costs for the 4070 and 4070ti are coming down some according to Toms Hardware's june roundup. I'm pretty set on the 4070 once my funding comes in but a Ti looks a little more attractive now.

Lower tdp means less heat inside the PC, less heat in the room, and a power supply that could be cheaper and last longer, resulting in a cheaper electrical bill and cost of PC parts. 4070 performance compared to power use is just amazing. This generation 70 series raw power gain is bad, but improving on DLSS technology and reducing on TDP make it pretty nice.

This generation of cards is an unsolvable dilemma for me. One the one hand you have Nvidia with the most exciting tech but too little VRAM on their affordable models. On the other hand you have AMD with buckets of VRAM but that horrendous FSR can’t hold a candle to DLSS imo. Currently using a 3080 means in order to have sufficient VRAM I’d have to move up to a 1100+ RTX 4080 which is not something I’m willing to do. To solve my problem the 4070(ti) needs to have a 16GB version like the 4060ti or the 4080 should be priced at around 900 max. Guess I’m just going to have to be patient…

I first thought I get a used RTX 3080. But these 350 Watts, thats expensive. Like per year, I will probably save 100€, when I just go with a RTX 4070 (that is new at 550€ here in germany). I wish I could use an AMD Card, but as a programmer who uses a lot of nvidia features thats not possible.

Bought the 4070 for £460. Opened box, unused gpu. Performing very nice and just a couple of touch in undervolt and its performing mind-blowing on 130 watts. Not even ocd anything just undervolt.

But I think the 4070 is about the same price or cheaper, also the 3080 has 10gb is vram vs the 4070 12gb On higher resolution like 1440 and above, most new game can reach up to 10 for allocation. Yes the games are now being released terribly optimized but I don’t see the devs changing or prioritizing that any time soon So, if you do above 1440p I’ve seen a lot reviews and benchmarks which recommend 12gb as the minimum. Future proof

the frames are about the same but my god the temperatures are literally cut in half compared to the 3080 went from 80+ degrees load to 55 degrees MAXIMUM and normally average around 40 degrees running at 100%. not to mention coil whine and fan noise are nonexistent compared to the 3080

I did some research and RTX 3080 for laptops are 8-16GB but slower GDDR6 nemory with 256bit bus instead of 320bit GDDR6X. resulting in being around 20% slower than desktop variant.

@@petesedom4ltanalfajer503 YES AND NO, technically a Ryzen 7000 series may get you a few extra frames but I would say minor. My test bench uses a 5700x and its great. So there would only be a minor loss and honestly it's something you would never notice

This one is easy, if you’ve already got a 3080 no need to upgrade to anything at all. If you have a 3070 or below then 4070 every time. My son had a 3070 and I bought him the 4070, just as powerful as the 3080 and uses 100w less power. Daughter has the 3070 now.

Bro I realized the rtx 3080 is truly loved by everyone I just got mine I didint want to settle for a 3070 which is also a good card.
