It's worse in some ways. I'm no Apple fan but the practice of gluing phones together does actually make *some* sense. It's good for water resistance and helps make the whole thing more compact. But here...I see absolutely no justification for gluing that plate on besides being intentionally anti-consumer.

Nvidia makes, at first glance, what looked like a very effective vapor chamber, dual axial fan cooling solution. Only to find out it's actually a very effective, non-serviceable dust collector. The AIB partners have to be viewing GN for their excellent coverage of the RTX 2000 series, and are now breathing a big sigh of relief.

Hyperus In Java, it is quite easy to dynamically switch the class that gets executed depending on, for example, the OS. A similar route could be taken to identify hardware and then execute the less optimized code on GTX hardware. Or do the old Nvidia trick where they throw more polygons on flat surfaces in order to cripple AMD, but optimize it so RTX gets hit less than GTX/AMD... we have been there and seen all of this! How do people not expect shit like this to happen?!

After I saw the aluminum plate separate as you heated it, I grabbed my spudger and pried the plate slightly away from the plastic frame, then cut the glue with a knife, working down gently until the plate came away, no damage at all. Actually glue is not them cheaping out, because screw down assemblies are designed self-aligning. No such luck with glue down assemblies, it will cause manufacturing rejects. It is purely done for aesthetic purposes, though I personally would have found some stainless hex key screws attractive.

Hey GN, I was wondring what prevents graphic cards and mobos from being reused as platform. For example, what prevents manufacturers from making something like a socketable chipset, or a socketable GPU or RAM? what's due to unforseeable change in the technology, that renders the platform obsolete, and what is just planed obsolence? The simple answer is greed and the other one: inability to standardize. Having a standard VRM (any phases of your choosing) + RAM slots and mountable cooler would allow not to bother and replace the GPU mostly. GPUs would need more versatile memory controllers as well.

It's cheaper to produce a BGA chip and solder it with the rest of the components than putting it on a LGA/PGA package, adding a socket and require a machine or a human to mount the chip. The only way a socket is valuable in term of costs for the manufacturer is when the same PCB design is shared with a line of products. So yeah there is greed but only when price and space aren't a constraint.

The best part of the video for me was finding out about the RGB. My rig is all blue LEDs and while green is nice and all I really like my blue color scheme. Flash the bios to an EVGA XC ULTRA and install x1 2.7 and bam you can control the rgb, look up a vid on how to flash the bios and do it at your own risk, i did it and it works on my 2080 FE

The more I'm seeing of the FE cooler, the more I'm digging it! Lots of aluminum, very little plastic and nice looking backplate. Depending on the noise and thermal performance, I'd be tempted to go Founders Edition over an AIB card. To be fair, the blower-style FE coolers looked awesome but the thermal/acoustic performance was usually subpar compared to AIB cards...

Disagree, sleave bearing fans are serviceable, they can be cleaned, re-oiled and then they are good as new, saving many bucks and the pain and time wasted on buying new ones and waiting for delivery !

Steve: next time you want to remove something that is glued or in this case double sided adhesive, put it in the freezer over night, then get some isopropyl alcohol to drip along the edges of where you're going to pry, the cold will make the glue less flexible and the alcohol will simply creep along the glueline loosening it for you. I use this trick when removing things all the time and you don't even have to pry hard before the glue simply just gives up. the alcohol will also let the glue work after it evaporates.

lilkwarrior and also this card is already running hot without ray tracing enabled. just wait till people start testing and running this gpu with ray tracing.. it wel be a motherboard melter all over again just like the gtx 480 was. but yeah the backplate is so thic that you can even cook on it. the power draw is also nuts, and yeah the insane power draw is without ray tracing so like i said already the power draw will be even higher. i am not gonna buy these overpriced and overhyped cards untill the prices become normal and when the power draw becomes normal. i also dont give a fuck about ray tracing because i only focus on high framerates.

you are nuts if you really think that the 2080ti is wort the insane amount of money. and btw the 2080ti is about 20% stronger compared to the 1080ti, but it does almost cost twice as mutch. and nobody wants ray tracing if they have to play at 1080p to even get 60 fps. shadow of the tomb raider didnt even get 60 fps with ray tracing enabled on the rtx 2080ti, it ran at about 45 to 50 fps. just admit that it is too early for ray tracing. these gpu's are simply not strong enough to run ray tracing at a nice resoution and framerate. but yeah go ahead and spent a shitton on money on a gpu that is completly overpriced and runs hot as fuck. meanwhile i wil enjoy my cool and silent running asus strix 1080ti on a nice asus rog swift 1440p 144hz ips screen with hdr. look a thousend times better compared to the retarded 1080p 60fps XD

For sure. Though I think you're pretty much just better off picking up a card that has a built in waterblock if you wanna go for the full watercooling build. I mean, manufacturers at this point have to realize that there is certainly a market for it. Picking up a reference card, just to remove the stock fan, to then spend another $200 to get an aftermarket waterblock just seems fucked. Then again, as I'm writing this comment, I can't find a single model of the 2080(TI) cards that has a stock waterblock. So I guess their in bed with EK... sucks for the consumer.

KlohsCalls, yeah no. No on doing a custom loop is buying a pre assembled water block card. Unless EK/Alpha cool started selling them. I think you must have bever built a high end water coooled PC, because no Nvidia are no in bed with EK, this is just how it has been for years.

I might've made myself unclear. Not built in as in: Stuck to the PCB. More like a package. Instead of getting the fan setup, you'd just get the waterblock. I.E, manufacturers save a buck & consumers save a buck. The quality would obviously have to be better. It just seems dumb to me at in 2018, the new generation of GPU still does not have the option to ditch the fan & get a waterblock instead.

How would you feel about just getting the PCB? w/o the cooler for a reduced price? To adress your first question: No, you can't really test it without putting it in a loop. But you'd think that with warranty & thorough testing on the side of the manufacturer sending the card would've done so before sending the card. You are after all paying for a premium product worth literally thousands of dollars. Do you really have that little faith in nVidia, EVGA & other GPU manufacturers?

What really grinds my gears with the glue design is that they had 4 screws in the correct position, just increase the length of those screws by a couple millimeters and make 4 holes into that plate. That would remove any glue, it would also not increase the amount of screws.

As a consumer I would sure as hell would not buy a card USED where I know that I can not simply clean it out or change the fans if necessary. With the mining craze and all that there are many used cards on the market that may have damaged coolers due to over using. Right now these can be easily bought and refurbished by people, and Nvidia gets no money out of these transactions, but they want to. *stashes tinfoil hat away* Nice hairdryer!

What all is that PCB under the shroud responsible for, other than fan and LED control? Looks like it is way over designed for just that.

I think it's there to adapt the connector that attaches to the GPU PCB. That connector probably uses something like I2C to send digital instructions for fan and RGB control to that little daughter board which then decodes and executes those instructions on the fans and LED(s). That's just my guess, but that's the only reason I can think of to have that much stuff on a separate board, and I can't think of a way to communicate RGB colours and fan speeds with a connector that (iirc) only had 5 pins without having to send the signal digitally since you'd need at least: GND RED BLUE GREEN FAN_PWM FAN_PWR - I'd imagine the connector is something more like: GND PWR I2C_SCL I2C_SDA + something else

There's a 12-pin rainbow cable (actually two 6-pin rainbow cables) connecting the auxiliary PCB to the GPU PCB. Besides, the way you do RGB+FAN on 5 pins is: 3 separately switched returns for RGB, a switched return for the fan, and 12V common supply. The reason is that it's cheapest that way, N-channel MOSFETs are cheaper and have lower on-resistance than P-channel of comparable complexity and are easiest used in low-side-switching. It seems a 5-wire bundle is leaving the auxiliary board towards the logo LED strip and a two 4-wire cables towards fans each. Aux board... what do we have there, 3 SOT-23-3 transistors seems like? Wish i had a better look at this. Wonder what the IC is in the middle, and what the odds are of it being STM8 :P Also interesting that there is a bunch of unpopulated footprints on the board, it looks like that have various intentions for it.

Leaving control of both LEDs and fans to the daughter board, without having to change anything on their card overall. Be interesting once embargo lifts, and the info flood begins.
