If you are still in doubt about the idea of a carnivorous parrot, even after watching this, there is a parrot from New Zealand called the Kea, the only known alpine parrot on Earth. It typically feeds on seeds, flowers and plants in summer, but in leaner times, it tends towards carnivory. It likes feeding on the eggs of other birds and will dig through snow to find something to eat. Unfortunately, sheep farmers have a problem with that because the Kea will attack a sheep to get at the fat layer surrounding its kidneys. As a result, the sheep can die of blood poisoning, and sometimes you don't see it happen because Keas can attack in the dark. They will also menace hikers and mountain climbers for their food, and with a beak like a Swiss-army knife, this parrot can pick away at anything, even rubber boot soles!

I won't lie to you. Before watching this my favourite creature from kaimere was the Uktan, because of it resemblence to a lion while being a dinosaur. But after hearing about the "Butcher of the Dead" and it's connections to the kaimeran settlements on Arvel and the fact it decorates its nest with the SKULLS of DEMONS to impress females and ward of predators like an absolute giga-chad has earned them the top spot on my list of favourite kaimeran fauna

The Vulture Parrot remind me a LOT to the Scavenger Macaws from the extended book of the "Peter Jackson's King Kong" 2005 movie titled "The World of KOng : A Natural history of Skull Island". Truly a great book, with really interesting concept and species who are in normal time cute and not dangerous who become scary looking and killer animals !

I have a couple questions for this video: What other parrots still exist in the known world, were hummingbirds a part of the Oligocene harvests, and did that witch hunter have tusks or was he just wearing a mask?
@TalesofKaimere
@TalesofKaimere 2 жыл бұрын
All parrots shown in that sketch still have known world cousins but are much more diverse on the Eastern continent. Hummingbirds we’re first brought in the Oligocene but more in subsequent harvests. The Aznarith Order revere the boar (used to be peccaries but boar are affiliated with the republic and civilization so the symbol changed with consolidation) and their masks have tusks

The first descriptions of the Ru Kel did NOT prepare me for a demon hunting ninja bird. That homunculus image is truly bizarre. 1. Since they're not quite human level, are there any other sapient parrots on the planet? 2. How big were the ancient similar parrots? 3. How often does it win encounters with leopards or homunculi on average?
@TalesofKaimere
@TalesofKaimere 2 жыл бұрын
1. No plans for fully sapient parrots. 2. The predatory flightless parrots were second biggest getting up to a hundred pounds. 3. In a direct fight leopard vs ru kel the parrot has the advantage, although leopards are much faster and usually able to escape if not killed on impact (which they often are). Homunculi are definitely at an advantage if they know it’s coming but ru kel are devastating from an ambush.

I like your take on parrots. We typically associate most parrots today with beauty and cunning, so seeing them specializing in brutality and carnivory on Kaimere is definitely very refreshing. I’m assuming this was probably partially inspired by the ones from The World of Kong: An Natural History of Skull Island book. If so (and even if not), very cool. Just curious, with this talk of birds having mythical qualities, were the Indrakai inspired by phoenixes or something else? I already know that owl traits are present (especially in the facial region).

On Kaimere, in the Knwon World, they're mostly recent harvested modern lineages and species of Parrot (more generic looking), but there still some of them who are very original compared to the others. For example, there also the Luka Parrot ! It's a coastal cliffs bird that share the same ecological life as the Oligocene radiation Puffin Parrot we see in the video. This specie belong to the subfamily Psittrichadinae, being a relative of the only memeber of this group : the Pesquet Parrot (Psittrichas fulgidus). This specie decend from a Parrot that came there 30 million years ago and belong to the Oligocene radiation Parrot lineage. He is a member of the Puffin Parrots group. They feed on crustaceans. They mate for life and have no need to migrate. They are very intelligent bird, like others parrots, and are time to time use as a pet by Kaimeran since they are easily keep in captivity at the moment they are not alone, otherwise they will be destructive, depressive and will wait without eating to death. In past time, efforts to utilize them as recognizance animals have thus far proven futile, as although they can understand commands and can remember phrases spoken by an enemy they are sent to spy on, they are easily distracted or feel lonely, at which point they inevitably return before the mission is complete. They are high talktative animal and can mimic a high range of sounds, words or dicussions, and can use them in many ways.

The Ru Kel's nest look frightennig, scarring, and badass as the same time ! All my Respects ! Also, in the nest picture at 8:18, the perspective they take remind me a lot of Owls, but since they take almost the same convergent evolution way than the famous Kakapo (Strigops habroptila) from New Zealand and since this later specie is most commonly known under the name of "Parrot-Owl", it's not a surprise if the Ru Kel remind us these nocturnal birds of prey too !

Twitter Post description of Keenan Taylor : - Ru Kel hunting a Trident deer at 6:29 and 9:49 : "Although a majority of the ru kel's diet is nuts, seeds, fruit, and foliage, they are proficient short-range ambush hunters, notorious for dropping out of trees and killing prey with a single neck or back-breaking bite." - A Proud Father, at 8:34 and 9:53 : "A young ru kel helps his father bring the skill of a titan crow back to the nest. The father won't display the scavenged skull, as it was not his or his mate's kill, but it will be added to the pile at the base of the tree." - Ru Kel and Leopard picture at 9:04 and 10:08 : "Ru Kel are extreme K-selection specialists. Young remain with their parents for up to eight years before leaving to establish their own territory. Females only lay one egg a year, one of the largest eggs laid in Kaimere, and it must be carefully incubated and, due to its size and shell thickness, cannot hatch on its own. Because of this, ru kel are very defensive of their young and well known to hunt and kill potential threats. Leopards are quite proficient at sneaking into a ru kel nest and snatching a hatchling. Ru Kel are particularly vicious to leopards because of this, although the cats are so common that there’s always work to be done." - The Demon Slayer at 10:17 : "Lacking magic, ru kel are not equipped to kill homunculi. However, they are capable of dispatching homunculi if they succeed in an ambush, often taking the head as a focal display of their nest. A homunculus beheaded without magic and not burned will regenerate in a few weeks, days if they recently fed, but it is an inconvenience to the point that they usually avoid ru kel territory." Also, good to know, but the creature the Ru Kel fight we see in the last picture is not a Demon (despite the title) but a horned Homunculi. He also possess retractables hooves on his feet ! It's said that calling his name brought bad luck, and because of that, Kaimeran are affraid of it ! Despite Ru Kel rarely kill this beast (see upper description) he use his skull like decoration for his nest when the occassion happen !

Can we call the human with deer antlers and having a bat face and ears at 10:19 to be a (sort of) Wendigo ? Because this Homunculus (and not a demon, even if they are more common in the Western Continent where the Ru Kel live, but for him there any differences thus), like you precise this fact in another comment, remind a lot this popular North American legendary beast ! And in our popular culture, the Wendigo is often depicted as a bloodthirsty antropomorphic deer and/or a giant, which is the case here ! Again, I love when new homunculies are included !

The Ru Kel is not only the last surviving member of his family, but also the last surviving Oligocene Parrot lineage descendant who remain in the Known World region ! HOWEVER, if all the others groups and families of Parrots who descend from the Oligocene Harvest lineage are extinct in this region, each of them always have surviving representatives members OUTSIDE the Known World region ! It's revealed by the 25 April 2022 post on Keenan Taylor Twitter account, with this following text : - "Parrots were one of the breakout stars of the Oligocene harvest. Their adaptability enabled them to reinvent niches then occupied by enantiornithean birds, and also exploit niches no other birds were exploring. Scavengers, predators, crustacean specialists, and flightless arboreal omnivores all came about from small, generalist parrots. Although most in the known world have lost ground to more recent arrivals, each clade has survivors, most notably the giant flightless parrot Ru Kel on the Western continent." So, yes, cool info to know, like that we will maybe have the possibility to see these others species on future video content who will explore others part of Kaimere planet !

THE *COCKATRICES* ( oviraptorids ) Pygmy cockatrice ( basically tiny anzu ) These guys are know for being highly protective of their eggs but with the ability to spray a skunk like spray from its behind and getting sprayed Is considered a curse They are about 1 ft tall And 5 ft long ( he got a reeeeeeeeaaaallly long tail ) The greater cockatrice These creatures are know to be beasts of burden ( stealing live stock and even killing children in a field ) With a terror bird like beak and a cassowary like head creat on the nose These guys are like a carnivorous rhino with feathers Their about 6 ft tall And a 10 ft tail And the biggest of the cockatrices is Zonafotor These cockatrice are strangely very passive of the cockatrice family as a hole (even allowing humans to go on its back for a while and sleep ) But don’t be fooled the large oviraptor is ready to pull some punches With big meaty claws ( like dienochierus ) it’s the dinosaurs primary source of defence And along with a goose like bill These creatures fill in the role of dienochierus of the biodome ( and go toe toe with baryzonkryx ) Their about 10 ft tall And 7 ft at the tail You like these guys ?

Once again amazing video!!! I can't wait to sponsor a video on the enteledonts of Kaimere! Also I have chosen a fully terrestrial, polar spinosaur, evolved from ichthyovenator. However, since it no longer is a piscivore, it's head has become more akin to an alligators, wider and such, for strong, powerful bites. I have had the arms shorten and become less used, as it no longer needed them in the forests where it hunts. It's feathered, like the deinocheirus in Prehistoric Planet, and they are usually all black. Females are born with a black body and a grey streak along their sides, each unique and identifying them as individuals in their lifelong mating courtships dine every year with the same mate. Females top out at 60 feet long and are the apex predators of their environments. Males are usually about 45 feet long, being much more slender than females, but having a much higher, and more colorful spine than the females, having accents of blue on the tops of their long-feathered spines. They are mainly nocturnal in behavior, because for 3 months of Priad's year, the only light comes from the twin moons. Over the past 20 million years their has been cooling of the globe, and the ichthyovenator population in the south has adapted in the absence of any larger predators in their environment. Also the reason for their massive sizes is that Priad has 15 percent less gravity than earth, but a slightly thicker atmosphere with much more oxygen in it. Is has an interesting affect on the humans in my book. Utahraptors evolutionary children are still a central part to the book as well, just around 30 feet long and about 2,000 pounds due to the lessened gravity of Priad and the higher oxygen content. They have evolved.... Interesting characteristics. Like an asymetrical body plan, utilized with deadly efficiency. (If you think I should make the animals smaller because my estimations are off please do tell!)

Random question : You said that there only two bears species in the Known World : the Cave Bear and the Uku bear (a relative of the Asiatics Bears specie, who look also in appearance like a Atlas Brown bear, but it's convergent evolution). BUT when the Northern Eurasian Ice Age harvest happen, who brought the Cave Bears, there was also our current Brown Bear specie that live as the same time and place. And since the Cave Bear and the Brown Bear were able to cohabit togethers during this period, is it possible to include the Brown Bear into Kaimere like one of the species who inhabit the Highland of Arvel biome ?

@TalesofKaimere

There are, although at this point most are in private collections since there are so few malevolent demons left in the known world. Many were made by witches during the Age of Witches although a few are relics of the First Children. Artifacts can lose their magic over time so a lot of them aren’t in tact anymore.

Depends on how much you want me to say! A $300 budget is pretty typical for clade videos, but it does mean I won't be able to do a lot of extra art, and perhaps only one bird from each clade. Basically I can work with whatever your budget is, but the budget does determine length and amount of art.
