for someone who’s been digging for twenty plus years and who’s seen the digger’s landscape shift over the last twenty plus years as well due to the internet, nothing comes remotely close to the feeling of going out in the open, finding and discovering some new sounds, taking them home to play in hopes of finding the illest samples known or unknown. an adrenaline rush that’s priceless. salute to those and of course to Madlib.

I first heard this melody as part of an album I now hold close to my heart, ‘Piñata’ by Freddie Gibbs and Madlib. This song is sampled on the track, ‘Thuggin’. I remember cycling around France in the summer of 2014 listening to this in my earphones. I was blown away by the composition, the evocative loop, the danger within it. It was my first time ever smoking and the honesty in Freddie’s lyrics just cut so beautifully against the sounds and I was left awe struck. Beautiful, beautiful song and such a joy to finally hear the original sample 6 years later.
