“This battle needs no introduction” proceeds to introduce it. This has definitely been something on the long list of events we’ve wanted to do and it ended up being a blast, literally. Today is also the anniversary of when I made this KZbin channel a staggering 11 years ago so it’s fitting with how much I enjoyed making the end of this video c:

What i personally love about Hoth was that it showed the rebels being able to throw hands. I know that 'Big evil empire brought low by rag-tag resistance soldiers'- style is more popular to a general public. But I get more dopamine in seeing an actual full-scale sci-fi war going on between peer or near-peer beligerents. That and it properly communicated what went on. 'why can't the empire just bomb the rebel base and has to abide by a direct land approach?' - ion cannon. 'yeah but what does the ion cannon do that prevents the imperial ships from just breaking atmosphere there?' - we see that in the film. I don't need everything to make sense, be realistic or practical, but Hoth was a battle you could really get immersed in when watching it. Memories man, memories.
@NickLupercus7 ай бұрын
Still one of my favorite sci-fi battles of all time.
@witherwolf33167 ай бұрын
They also had a shield protecting the base from bombardment and air assault (shields of that kind prevent repulsorlift vehicles from passing through them) so the Empire had no choice but to land troops for a ground assault. The Ion Cannon was more for disabling Star Destroyers from attacking the escaping transport ships I believe.
@potentiallyunfunnyguy97167 ай бұрын
@@witherwolf3316 Ah! my mistake. (a good excuse for me to rewatch it again as well :D It has been a while) Still, I really dig that the rebels were able to bring two larger assets to bear in the form of the cannon and shield generator. Balanced battles make for the best suspense.
@The7guys7 ай бұрын
@@potentiallyunfunnyguy9716 You're still pretty spot on with your assessment. The Rebels were fighting a battle of attrition at Hoth, and when they discovered that the Empire had deployed AT-ATs to the surface, they responded with makeshift airspeeders that just so happened to have cables meant for hauling cargo. Wedge and Luke helped of course, but the Rebellion knew what they were getting into in order to buy time for the evacuation.

Fun fact General Veers knew about the AT-ATs flaw with the legs being vulnerable. However typical military/gov ignorance ignored his warranted complaints and employed them anyway
@deucedice5747 ай бұрын
Yeah and it ended up being the only way the Rebels were able to take them down. The snowspeeders were retrofitted civilian craft, their reactors could only barely power their guns and led to them being extremely underpowered. The usual Rebel craft X-wings, Y-wings, ect could very easily pierce AT-AT armor with proton torpedos and their much more powerful cannons.
@fjnordthedwarf40047 ай бұрын
It's also worth mentioning that this was a flaw in a lot of the Empire's weaponry and equipment- most of it was designed to conform with the Tarkin Doctrine, which called for overwhelming size and firepower to enhance the Empire's rule through fear. Basically, AT-ATs, Star Destroyers, the presentation of stormtroopers, the composition of Empire fleets- it was all designed for the Imperial military to perform optimally as a political and psychological tool rather than a practical threat on a modern battlefield- hence also why the Empire relied so heavily on vast numbers of unshielded and hyperdriveless TIEs for fighter combat despite shielded snub fighters like the X-wing being conclusively proven superior in engagement after disastrous engagement. TLDR; The problems with the Empire military were a product of its intended use as a tool of psychological warfare and suppression- it was never intended for even a remotely symmetric conflict, but to prevent a force capable of opposing the Empire from coming into existence to begin with- a purpose it failed at pretty much instantly, considering that the Rebellion got underway almost immediately after the Empire's formation.
@deucedice5747 ай бұрын
@@fjnordthedwarf4004 Very good point, though I would say it's fair to mention that the TIE fighters were actually not bad fighters. Their design principles are reminiscent of the Zeros employed by the Imperial Japanese in WWII, very high maneuverability and solid weapons at the cost of effectively no armor, they perform well when fighting against craft of lower to equivalent capability, but once they're outclassed they have no chance in combat. Good for defensive screening and interception of enemy fighters, but if you try to use them in any other role you will experience catastrophic casualty rates of their pilots.
@fjnordthedwarf40047 ай бұрын
@@deucedice574 True. Interestingly, the whole thing with TIEs (not actually being that bad but constantly being deployed in situations outside what should be their combat role) happened with capital ships too- an overreliance on using ships designed pretty much for the sole purpose of fighting other capital ships of equivalent size meant many Star Destroyers routinely fell victim to tactics which simply wouldn't have worked if Imperial capital ships (and just fleets for that matter) had slightly more anti-fighter weaponry- not to mention the near-total lack of weapons effective for the class of capital ship they were actually facing with some regularity (i.e. small, relatively fast and fairly well-shielded)
@Lucat277 ай бұрын
I think it’s not entirely fair to say the Tarkin doctrine failed. The only problem is one inherent to authoritarian regimes: if you ever show weakness, it all starts to crumble down. For years rebellions were brutally put down (mandalore, mon Cala). It’s just that a gross amount of incompetence allowed for the rebels to win Yavin, and then there was hope. And “rebellions are built on hope.” If Krennic and Vader hadn’t both been so arrogant, Tarkin’s strategy would have remained effective.
