"Ruby is a little girl who I met at the airport in my hometown of Melbourne, Australia. Prior to going to the airport, I had watched a James Bond movie, Moonraker, and for some reason that night there was a chord and a melody in the theme song (a brilliant song by John Barry) that just really grabbed me. I went, "Oh my god, give me my guitar," and I had to go looking for it. And just from that I wrote this song! Eventually I got a little bit of sleep and then we got out to the airport. This song was consuming me. I'm playing this song, over and over again. I get to the chorus, my eyes are closed, and all of a sudden I hear this little voice singing (la, la, la, la, la) I opened my eyes and this little tiny girl was singing and moving from side to side and looking at me with those eyes. My first thought was where are your parents, cause I'm a father, too! You're standing right in front of a stranger, in an airport. She looked quite comfortable to be close to me. I looked around and saw her parents and they waved. She was just drawn to the music somehow, so I asked her Mom and Dad what her name was. I got this sense that there was an old spirit in the girl. Her mother said that her name was Ruby. This is so perfect because I didn't know what I was writing about, I just knew I had to write this song. Before we got on the plane I said, "Ruby, I've just written you a song and here it is. It's called Ruby's Eyes. Another thing happened that day that I didn't realize until years later. I was reading a book on the plane and I put my boarding card inside the book as a book marker. Because I hadn't flown very often in Australia the airlines had downgraded me from gold to ruby. It said on the card - "Emmanuel, Ruby." I didn't notice that until years later. "

I actually never heard of Tommy Emmanuel until I saw a Chet Atkins tribute with Tommy being one of the guitar players and he told a very fascinating story of wanting to meet Chet and he wrote to him. Chet wrote back and his mother said he got a letter from him and then they met up and then I looked him up and was totally mesmerized. I've never seen anybody play with such grace and beauty. Whoever put that special together I want to thank them for finding my new favorite guitar player. Awesome playing.

If tears were applause you would be hearing me everytime you appear, with or without an instrument. You are a blessed interpreter conveying to all mankind the astonishing beauty in living. Magnificently sparkling, every note a wonderment. I send all my love to you and Ruby.

Like good wine, aging makes you better and better Tommy. I could feel that evolution in your playing last decade, your energy is way more balanced and serene, closer and closer to the emotional aspect of music (IMHO). Flawless, sober, so melodious and very moving. Way beyond what I hope to achieve myself in a lifetime, but that's only fair. Bravo ! And thank you for all the wonderful music and inspiration !
