It's not a "gift" as if it was just given to him. Tommy has been playing since he was 3-4 years old and has put a tremendous amount of time into his playing. He has played constantly his entire life. He is still playing a ton of shows. Look at his tour schedule. It takes so much work and dedication to play like this and he is able to express his personality through this instrument. Great guy! I'm fortunate to have had the pleasure to see him live.

If you have not heard the story, Tommy Emmanuel grew up listening to Chet Atkins on the radio, but he never actually saw him on TV. While it might sound funny to us, Emmanuel did not realize that Atkins was playing with a base player. He thought all of the guitar notes were being played by Atkins, which he found to be quite incredible, but in an attempt to duplicate what he thought was the solo playing of Atkins, he learned to play his own bass accompaniment, and that is why he does things that you might not have seen before. He is a remarkable musician.

John Newton, 1779 Verse 1 Amazing Grace how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. Verse 2 ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed! Verse 3 Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. Verse 4 The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my Shield and Portion be, As long as life endures. Verse 5 Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease, I shall possess, within the veil, A life of joy and peace. Verse 6 The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, Who called me here below, Will be forever mine. More the the playing of the song, is the BELIEVING of that Amazing Grace that has come to this world, for without it, there is no reason for the song being played. John 3:16-18 (KJV) 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

OK, so I completely and professionally informed him while there are some truly good pickers out there, Tommy Emmanuel also does not rely on polished production when he plays. He could, but he doesn't, as his live performance are always insanely brilliant. This performance is as are too many others, a testament of Tommy's unabashed guitar genius..
