I’m seeing this 4 years after it was uploaded but isn’t she the perfect example of how beautiful these little souls are ❤️. Poor little girl losing her Mum. But she had a human mum who loved and cared for her. I may be working with bats this summer and I’m excited about it! Ours are much smaller in the States but they need love and care also when they’re baby’s or adults. Every creature, (us included), are worthy of love and being cared for when they can’t care for themselves.

Bats can cary a lot of dangerous deseases though, which means that a scratch or bite, can lead to some nasty infections and sickness. Now if you imagine that people in the midle ages and such, didn't really had the understanding we do today, it kinda explains why they have this bad reputation. Not to mention that superstition, but even today some people believe that black cats mean misfortune ...

@Paolo G I am talking about the bad reputation in general and not just Australia. There are of course peculiarities which change from culture to culture. But a lot of bad reputation to speak simply comes from a lack of understanding or knowledge. Of course bats are not more dangerous than most other mammals out there. But people easily fall in to superstition. And then fear guides their idea about animals and their behaviour.

I do wish we had these animals in the states. You all are so dedicated but who wouldn’t be. They give so much love and it’s amazing the emotions that show in their eyes. I can’t even imagine what it is like to say goodby to them but Free they must be.

This video is so intimate and unique. There are a good number of nicely shot videos of flying fox rehab, but you never get to see such a rich portrayal of the animals' personality and interactions with the caretakers. Are little reds different from other species? Nicer / less aggressive? Or are they all about the same at that age?

I love bats so much. They're so misunderstood by people and are portrayed in media as dirty creatures that suck your blood and have rabies. Bats eat from insects to fruit, and only one drinks blood, but from other animals and not from humans, and they're small and don't drink a lot of blood. I love bats because they're such beautiful, friendly creatures, and like me, they're always judged and are misunderstood.

Hey, yeah you can't keep them as pets. You have to be a registered bat carer to look after them. I'm not sure where you're from but in Australia bats are still heavily persecuted from the media, politicians and many locals who have them nearby. The media like to run fear pieces that scare people about potential disease and politicians use them as a way to gain favour with angry locals who don't want them near their homes. There is little to fear from bats once you are educated about them. That's something the majority of Australia is not. In fact, I intend to make a video highlighting these issues in the future. It's a very frustrating problem.

we are losing a lot of our bats in NJ due to a disease that affects their respiratory system. and unfortunately, rabies. several years ago, a postal worker from our town died from rabies after being bitten by a bat in his attic. i think bats are marvelous little creatures that have gotten a bad reputation. i'm glad you are able to save them.

Dawn Masterson Are you referring to white nose syndrome? I hear it has been absolutely devastating for bat populations over there. I'd like to travel to the US and document some of the work people are doing to counter this problem. That's unfortunate about the worker, very sad. We try to educate people to get post exposure treatment if they are bitten or scratched by bats. They used to allow bats to be brought into schools to educate children however they don't anymore. A really poor decision. Education is key.

yes, that's the disease i referred to. we have many bat caves in our area, old mines that have been closed and then taken over by the bats. the local rangers check the populations regularly and have been finding many sick bats, as well as dead ones. some bats survive the illness, but are never quite the same. i'm not sure what causes the disease, i have only seen articles in the paper occasionally. i raised my kids to be aware of bats, to avoid them if possible, but not to harm them or be afraid of them. i've tried to do the same with snakes and spiders, altho those lessons didn't quite take!

After chasing bats around my house all summer for distaste for them grew then one was traded on my floor my daughter stepped on it and it didn't bite her I helped the little girl bat out because she's from the maternity colony in my attic . I learned that brown bats in pa are really non aggressive and here to help out it was nice not being swamped by mosquitos this year so I'm gonna do exclusion and seal up the house but I like how they regulate the insects around here and the bats are harmless except for their poop but that's why I'm moving them to the woods and setting up a bat house any suggestions on how I can get them to take to the bat house I built

Hey man I just saw this. Yeah Google bat boxes and they should recommend good placement options. It needs to be secure and somewhat protected from the elements if possible. Check out how microbat boxes are built because some can be rather picky. Great idea though mate!

The "bats-tangled-in-my-hair" fear syndrome is so ODD. I mean, how on earth could an animal as successful as a bat continue if it blundered constantly into people's heads???? The vast majority of bat species I think of as my little mosquito hoovers. The others I think of as my fruit pollonnators. And only one do I think of as "creepy", and that's because it walks on its knuckles (NOT sucks blood)! Bats were there before us and, please God, will be long after we're gone. They're miracles of nature.
