*For those who are wondering, hybrid orangutan I think is a mix between Borneo and Sumatra Orangutans, because the 2 are considered different species. There are only 3 known orang species in the world: Bornean, Sumatran, and the extremely rare Tapanuli!*

I have a cardiac birth defect. Being a lover of orangutans and dedicated to supporting their preservation I asked my cardiologists at the adult congenital cardiac team at texas children’s. To me it seems the nature of their habitats do not allow them to get the type of physical exercise they were born for. To have trees and a similar setting the area would have to be acres. Even with the enrichment exercises orangutans in zoos can’t get the type and amount of stimulation to the heart needed to prevent heart disease. This is very interesting and I am so thankful for all of the zookeepers, veterinarians and heart specialists who research and study how to keep orangutans as healthy as possible. We must do what we can to preserve their species. They are gentle, beautiful amazing creatures. I also am intrigued how the seeds of many native species of plants and trees are unable to germinate until after they have passed through the digestive tract of orangutans. There is so much to learn from them.

@Roberto C the reason humans lasted this long as a species, is because we gave eachother help and care completely for free, for thousands of years. The idea that you should have to "pay" for healthcare is a neurotic modern invention, made so the rich can get richer as the poor get poorer. Hell, there's even evidence that early humans would NOT leave the sick or elderly behind, even if the person was weighing everyone down and needed more service than they could provide to others. It's a shame you're less evolved than literal cavemen.

Great apes should not be kept in a zoo they should be kept in a secured forest area to roam free in the trees. It angers me so much to see such a magnificent creature in capacity for stupid humans to come and stare at all day. If humans want to look at these creatures they should be made to trek through a forest with professional guides to look at the orangutans from a safe distance as they live in their intended natural habitat.

He looks broken and I don’t know why humans have to take freedom away from these wild animals supposedly in the name of preservation. Wouldn’t you all rather see all the wild animals free? Don’t they deserve that freedom? I don’t like Zoo’s and I won’t support them. It’s too hard seeing animals caged when I know better. I know where they should all really be and that’s free.

Screaming Tima I’m not an expert but if he gets released, he’ll literally be on the top chart for poachers. Plus orangutans don’t have much habitat left for them. There are three species of Orangutans, Bornean, Sumatran, and Tapanuli. Rudi was part Sumatran and part Bornean. They don't occur naturally in the wild because Sumatra and Borneo are islands with a large stretch of water inbetween preventing the apes from reaching each other. Some zoos don't let Bornean and Sumatran orangutans breed for fear of contaminating the species respective gene pools and running the risk of who knows what kinds of genetic and health issues.

**Gee, the cause of his heart issue is a real mystery..... You have a captive orangutan, who spends more than half each day laying around in a small cage, and the rest of the time basically laying around outside, getting MUCH less exercise than a wild orangutan. How could that extremely sedentary lifestyle with little exercise, possibly lead to weak heart function?? It'll require a think-tank committee, and several years of study to figure out the problem...😂**

It seems counterintuitive at first, but modern American zoos are actually great for ape conservation. They help spread awareness and raise money for helping them in the wild, they allow non-intrusive studies of ape behavior, they help keep a safe population of apes for the future, and they provide homes for apes who can't live in the wild due to being born into captivity. It's thought that ape heart problems are due to lack of exercise, which many zoos have been improving on.
