Rudy is a 1993 American sports film directed by David Anspaugh. It is an account of the life of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. It was the first movie which the Notre Dame administration allowed to be shot on campus since Knute Rockne, All American in 1940.
In 2005, Rudy was named one of the best 25 sports movies of the previous 25 years in two polls by ESPN (#24 by a panel of sports experts, and #4 by espn.com users).[1] It was ranked the 54th-most inspiring film of all time in the "AFI 100 Years" series.[2]
The film was released on October 13, 1993, by TriStar Pictures. It stars Sean Astin as the title character, along with Ned Beatty, Jason Miller and Charles S. Dutton. The script was written by Angelo Pizzo, who created Hoosiers (1986). The film was shot in Illinois and Indiana.

My son is 37 and when he went to grade school his teacher was friends with Rudy. He had Rudy visit his class and speak to the kids one day. Most of the children saw the original movie and were thrilled to actually meet him. BTW, I am typing this with tears in my eyes.

Stop putting power into other people’s thoughts of what you like and dislike. This story is a bold-faced lie and yours is probably better than the real Rudy’s. You don’t need a fraud to make you feel better about your life, you’ve made it this far and didn’t have to lie about your life on a mass scale or scam the stock market to reach some sick, money-hungry goal like the “real” Rudy.

My son is determined to go to Notre Dame and play in the drum line and he believes in the spirit. When he wanted to play drums in 4th grade in his school band at our parish he was told he couldn't. He is in high school now and an all high school Indiana State member of the drum line, a life scout almost eagle and last week we went again to Notre Dame to a home football game to see the band. Even though I do not have a college degree and don't make a lot of money he will not let anyone tell him he is not going to go to Notre Dame.

Ben Hur sorry but you definitely should not be making a key assumption that you are making: that the screen play for this movie is essentially a dramatized form of what “the real” Rudy said happened in those years; that if something happened in the movie, at least something significant, it must have been told by Rudy to the filmmakers or written in his memoirs or whatever. ... the truth of how film making works is very different. Remember, this is a drama that is “based on a true story”, not a documentary. Sure the writers use Rudy’s versions of events as a foundation but yes they will definitely embellish it to make it more dramatic, inspirational, and above all else more likely to please reviewers and sell more tickets at the theatre. Most true stories, even if remarkable, aren’t entertaining enough or in line enough with what film watchers used to Hollywood style films expect, so like in most every movie that claims to be “based on a true story” the writers here certainly embellished. This approach is nothing new and nothing unique to the film “Rudy”, and you should not blame the real Rudy for inaccuracies or mischaracterizations that appear in the film. I do agree though that when a film like Rudy makes someone look bad based on events that did not happen in real life it is unfortunate because so many people (like yourself until you learned the truth) watch movies like this and assume most everything they see really happened.

Back in 2001, at the age of 50, this movie got me through the police academy. I printed out a picture of Rudy (the real one) being carried off of the football field. The people who can't get over the fact that Hollywood took some liberties with minute details are sad, sorry, jealous people indeed. Rudy, with all odds against him, achieved a near impossible dream. He overcame adversity when everything should have been going against him. He did it. He got into Notre Dame. He made the team. He dressed for the Irish. He played on the field and sacked the Georgia Tech quarterback. Everyone was against him. His whole family thought he was just a dreamer. He graduated from Notre Dame, a life long dream for anyone, but especially him with his learning disability. If you can't watch this movie and have tears of joy in your eyes at the end, and be happy for Rudy's impossible achievement, there's something the matter with you. I pray for you. Good work Rudy!

Every time he was told no I felt that no. When he FINALLY got excepted I cried. And in the end when they let him play I was on the edge of my seat cheering, RUDY, RUDY, RUDY!! You at least contributed to on the field. Rudy was never going to contribute to the team. And do not believe that he was an inspiration. The players thought he was a pest. And the ending of the movie created a false narrative implying that he was carried off the field by his teammates because he was an inspiration and they admired him. The reality was that a couple guys picked him up and put him on their shoulders as a joke. All the inspiration stuff was created via Hollywood magic. He spent all that time just so he could say he played for ND for two plays in garbage time. The guy used this movie to promote himself and it eventually led to his conviction of securities fraud.

My brother in law went to notre dame on a football scholarship, his first year was when the Rudy story happened, he was roommates with joe Montana for four years, he started every game, UN fortunately he suffered concussions on a regular basis, the coaches would always tell him and other players with concussions, if you don’t want to play there are four guys behind you that’ll take your spot,, they would always say you got your bell rung,,... he decided to try out for the browns and made the team, also taking a beating even worse then at college, he could barely spell his name after most practices, so he quit, he had a business degree, went on to be very successful and raise a great family, at 53 he started having strokes and heart attacks, he suffered from CTE and lost his mind and died at 57 years old, both his parents lived to their upper eighties..he was truly a great person, a humble person , he rarely talked about his accomplishments, I guess this is why I’ve written this long story for him and my sister, Notre dame may be a great school but they like all the other football schools really couldn’t care less about the future health of their players.. the same applies to the pros,

What people are missing is Rudy wanted to play football for ND and he did have some help doing it and even Rudy knew he wasn't built for football but at the very end of the movie it said "All 5 of Rudy's brother's went on to receive college degrees" and THAT was what was most inspirational.

I have completed my master’s degree. This movie is about not to give up. Rudy had a lot of obstacles, but he accomplished his dreams. During my university years, I had to face many challenges too because my parents were not able to afford it, and I was not lucky enough for scholarships. However, there are ways of success when the determination is strong. Rudy is a great motivation for success.

Yes, Hollywood will always take creative liberties in order to make a mediocre, true story an inspirational, fictional one... But all the same, I love the story, fiction or not. And sometimes the fantasies of our minds are more real to us and have a greater impact on our lives than bare facts and numbers. So call out Rudy all you want: His story spawned an inspiration that webs out to thousands of people like me and other fans.

@WILTALK

@@gregorydowney5410 So you think playing two downs of football in garbage time is something that everyone should shoot for as a life goal? The history was a result of creative movie enhancement of the actual bare facts. If not for that there was no glory or history. It was all smoke and mirrors. Movies have always made heroes out of villains and villains out of heroes. They can make something as simple as delivering mail sounds interesting and exciting. Rudy's glory was created in the movie not on the field. There are many stories of actual bench riders coming in and making game winning contributions. Those should be the focus of inspiration. There was a recent story of a mentally challenged boy who was on the basketball team almost like a mascot who out of necessity came into a game and scored in double figures to help his team win. That is inspiring. Not a contrived story about a con artist.
