I have to admit it amazes me the way people drive into standing water. Even if you are in a big 4wd if you see water splash up you have done it wrong. The splash sends the water up and the engine sucks it in. I had to explain to a guy in a lexus that he had hydro locked his engine after he thought it would be funny to drive full speed through a deep puddle at the grocery store parking lot. Boggles my mind that they have marked ford crossings in the UK. I’ve *never* seen one in the US. If a bridge is too much, they’ll build an embankment for the road and put a culvert in for the waterway. If some sort of dry crossing can’t be built, the water stays uncrossable. They tell you here to *never* drive into *any* depth of standing water because you can’t tell how deep it is or if the roadway’s been washed out or not. The watchword is “Turn around, don’t drown”

@@eddyr3691 ford crossing is old, but it is not built for car at first. It means it isnt as easily access as now compare to long century ago. There must be modern construction and maintenance involve in building the base of ford,the slope for entering, and asphalt for the road. You can see Some driver even take a wrong route, proceed to enter the river, and it is really bumpy with normal river bed such as gravel, rock and sand.
@eddyr36912 жыл бұрын
@@winters4960The asphalt stops before the crossing itself, which transitions to concrete for the full length at this particular ford. Concrete has been around a very long time. The design of the ford will have been set long before modern construction methods, and this rural route (road) established long ago. It will have been made for any traffic that could cross it, which at the time would likely have been horse and cart. The design of very modern low cars with their low air intakes and complex electronics doesn't factor into it, nor does the massive boom in vehicle ownership in the last few decades. Locals will have continued using the original track to their benefit since it was first established centuries back, and the immediate area evolved naturally over time. There are buildings along the route, a nearby mill which is a particular feature at this location. As to cars going the wrong way, the few examples ive seen is one idiot driving fast and aquaplaning, and another intentionally in his 4x4 to get a run up to splash the onlookers.

The alternative route is circa 4 miles. These people will already have driven around the road closed signs. I’ve often wondered if there is a case for fitting gates, that could be closed when Rainworth Water is high. It would save insurers a lot of money, but also spoil my Sunday Afternoon KZbin viewing.
@rearspeaker63642 жыл бұрын
@@grayfox7671 the insurers would have to pay for it, cause the town won't.
@grayfox76712 жыл бұрын
@@rearspeaker6364 , in that case it’s a no-go. Newark & Sherwood DC wouldn’t cough up! There’s a similar situation on Watery Gate Lane, Thurlaston over in Leicestershire. You‘d think the street name would give a clue, but vehicles get stuck in the ford there. This usually entails a fire service response!

For people who aren’t local, it isn’t even a worthwhile shortcut ! Like 3-5 minutes saving max. Also let’s not forget if you do make it through and you don’t hydro lock your engine you can also warp your brake discs, ruin tracking and or damage electrics. Some people are daft

I asked how long a diversion route would be to avoid this ford on a different video. I was gobsmacked when I read your post about not being a worthwhile shortcut and the small amount of time it saves.
@Mike-tv9rk2 жыл бұрын
Youd be amazed at how many people dont even bother with maps. They dont even know how to put an alternative route into their sat nav. And look at the cars :- they are all people who have fled cities for the rural school run life. They have no clue where they ate all day- a bit like an amazon courier - “computer says go left” 😳

@@madmax-tg3vo what is the purpose of the Ford? I don’t understand why they don’t just build a simple arch bridge over the water. Or is it that the water being at this level is an uncommon occurrence?

7:28 I hope the drivers of the Countryman and F-Pace saw that. The 2 flooded crossovers/suvs vs a little hatchback, a Corsa of all small hatchbacks for the pair of possibly badge snobs. :)

Black Mondeo driver was decent, went in and started a wave then gently followed it out. Water didn’t even reach the grill. Masterclass.
@gepwxaqdfsidsesg15482 жыл бұрын
@@Durzel it does depend on the car though. One of my Peugeots had the inlet to the airbox quite high, above and behind the wheel arch liner. It was maybe two feet off of the ground, however it also had an inlet grill low down on the front bumper next to the front fog light. If you went really slowly it would be okay but I'm pretty sure that with any speed at all that inlet would have just acted like a scoop and pushed water up over the wheel arch liner to where the inlet was. Old cars with a big pancake filter on top of the engine seemed like a better design to me. I have no idea how it is with a Mondeo.
