I was thinking the same, slow in, get the water to roll over and then keep a consistent low speed. So many started similar to the BMW to then just seemingly panic and floor it sending the engine to destination hydro-locked.

I drove my g20 320d through water that easily reached the door sill. I went slowly and steadily not a problem at all. No steam or hydro locked engine.

You cant do it to slow. Bottom is concrete so you would not stuck. Slower you go ..smaler wave you are doing. Lesser risk of damaging car or losing registration plate.

My observations: 1. Ground clearance helps 2. Huge grills are good at sucking in air through the front and they are equally as effective with water 💦 3. BMW must have placed the air intakes or some critical electric components like the alternator really low or in a place easily susceptible to water ingress. Didn't see Mercs and AUDIS failing as much. 4. Take it slow and steady, push the water in front and ride behind the wave 🌊

I believe the bmw intake is behind the kidney grille, so if you see that going under it's almost a guarantee that they've buggered it.

BMW has a cold air intake on the front grille - it increases performance by drawing cold air (i.e. more dense) into the engine. If you go too fast through the water, you pile water on top of the intake and it stalls.

Once I drove through a flooded road but didn’t know it was very deep, few seconds later I was stuck and the water level was over my hood but I popped that baby into 4H and pressed the pedal hard and voila I was out before anything worse happens

I love the mixed consensus people have. Either: Slow and steady to let the engine really absorb the water or Gun it, flood the engine quickly and rip off your numberplate in the process.

The engines don't absorb the water. The problem is when water reaches the air intake of the engine and enters the combustion chambers, it can't be compressed by the pistons and will, in the worst case, total the engine. If you speed through the water chances are big that the water floods the entire engine bay including the intake/airfilter housing and boom...there goes your engine!

@@Timico1000 Slow and steady, keep engine revs slightly high, if if stalls don`t try to start as water will be sucked into the exhaust, a slow constant speed is always best.

Yeah the whole idea of air induction is to feed cold air to the engine, so the inlet is often in or around the front grill, also these are cars so not really designed to be submarines

Air intakes used to be high, on top of the engine, now, often they have been extended to get cold from the front.

Agreed! And this has been going on at this ford for decades too! I've been visiting Rufford since the early 90's and they were doing it then for the people watching. Saying that in all the times I've been, I've never seen any cars brake down, so either the water level was very low on the days when I've visited, or the showing off is getting worse. Although not going to complain as it's my guilty pleasure watching lol.

I live in Mansfield which is a stones throw away from this place and a couple of years ago a lad in a lowered Citroen Saxo decided to go full pelt through it and you heard 10 seconds later was a bang amd engine bits fly all over the place and he said and i quote 'ive got a mate who have this fixed in an hour" and about 100 of us pissed ourselves laughing at him 😂😂

As resident of the swamp cities of southern Louisiana in the U.S. this is very entertaining to watch lmao. Basically, if you're in sedan, avoid anything larger than a puddle if you can, if you have some clearance so your exhaust doesn't get flooded, drive slow and ride behind the wave in front of you. If you're pushing water onto your hood, then it is 100% getting into the air intake. Never go at the same time as another car going the opposite direction, the wave will flood you. If you can follow behind in the wake of a larger vehicle, that can help smaller cars get through.

doesn't matter what model you have, go in at a steady pace create a bow wave and then ride behind it. and make sure you dont go in water deeper than your air intake.

@@anthonybelton-ford3124 actually not, if the water reaches the air intake it doesn't matter how slow you go, the engine will still hydrolock, but if it's not running you may end just with a bit of water in the intake tube and i would also take out the air filter to check if it got wet, if it's wet i'm not even starting the car, i'll let it dry and check for water trapped in the air intake tube meanwhile, just to make sure I don't ruin my car, would you ruin your car for 15 minutes of hassle? I'm sure that the avarage person has to work for more than 15 minutes to buy another car! Or even to replace the engine.
