Joe Marler is one seriously genuine and naturally funny man and as a fiercely heterosexual Welshman I don't think it's out of order to say that I really like this guy. God knows that we need the Joe Marler's of this world right now in 2020 to put the smiles back on our faces and not the frowns from the likes of the dour Alyn Wyn Jones or Warren Gatland.

This is the reality of English conversation ability and the inability to ask appropriate questions amongst the Japanese. Japanese students study English everyday for 1 hour a day for 6-8 years. Plus extra tuition after school. The method with which it is taught plus other eerie factors result in less than 10% of the population being able to converse at an intermediate level. As for the inane questions asked, journalists in Japan are not accustomed to rugby and lack the resources and initiative to do any background research. The awkward silences derive from a clash of cultural norms. Japanese interviews and conversations are scripted and stay on course to avoid any mishaps or cause of offence. Whereas most western countries will allow free flowing conversation to be spontaneous and even humorous. If you could remove yourself as far as possible from what is considered normal you would find yourself in Japan.
