Thank you! This was a great chat. Really good guys. Love Schalk. Brought me some of my favourite memories. Rassie Erasmus’ has turned this Springbok team into something really special. Really a symbol of hope for South Africans and a beacon of how group of South Africans from all walks of life can come together as one. It’s really incredible. They are brutal on the field but have so much humility and just genuinely good people. The work that Rassie and his team have done extends beyond rugby. Siya is so inspirational too. Love this!

The Aussies have a pretty big tight 5 and a very strong scrum as shown against the French in their warm up and against Georgia whom are famous for their scrum as its their main strength that they take pride in. Their inside centre Kerevi and wingers Koribete and Mark Nawatwintawasi can give some big hits and have shown up in the break down doing some quality clean outs. The Wallabies will be competitive but I doubt they can match the Boks agression, but you never know.

What Schalk did not mention is that 'the past' in South African is not only the huge stadiums, the Currie Cup, the interprovincial rivalry or exclusion of the Springboks in the first World Cup. It's Rassie and his team's inclusion of the historical style of the apartheid era South African Rugby Association (SARA) for black players and the South African Rugby Federation (SARF) for mixed race players. South African Rugby fought itself for the first 25 years after liberation. Now it isn't fighting itself any more. The Springboks display the potential that underpins diversity. Today's great Springbok players no longer copy the styles of previous International Springbok greats, they show the greatness of the styles which unrepresented groups never had an international stage to display on and which apartheid and exclusion had kept separate. Every time the Boks prevail today, a South African public celebrates how right it is to include us all. Manie Libbok ,Kurt-Lee Arendse or Hanyani Shimange don't have a style of play like any previous Springbok greats. But if you travel around the Boland and watch rugby played on imperfect fields with hundreds of spectators lining the touchline, you'll find plenty Libboks, Arendses and Shimanges. Then travel to the Northern or Eastern Cape where fields are tufts are grass laid out at an unlikely angle. Where men would play barefoot for want of money to afford boots. But the brand of beer they drink and the banter afterwards is still the same. That is Rugby

Schalk played with such intensity, ferocity and malice, that you never would think he was as articulate and intelligent as he is. Such a fine rugby brain and great dude. Literally one of my favorite pundits. In hindsight we can now all appreciate that he got to the highest echelons in rugby not just because he had a big body and knew how to use it, but also because his rugby nous is off the charts.

true that! I remember the stereotype based on his look at the time and his absolute fearlessness going in for tackles was that of being not too smart. Oh, how wrong we were! He is one of the best and smartest analysts I've seen. Never says the cliche's or says the same thing, always fresh and original. Top man!

This quote comes from a different era and it is not meant to offend the great Scottish players of the past, today or the future. Bill McClaren was one of the greatest rugby commentators ever. When the Springboks beat Scotland by 44-0 he said: "and the Scots were lucky to get nil!" R.I.P. Bill. Your rugby commentary always lighted up my life.

Boks have times their run perfectly. Pretty ordinary team over the last 8 years, but the coaches ability to peak them in time for world cups is unrivaled. I don't think they even played rugby for like 2 years post 2019 world cup, and even this year they were getting clapped around by the kiwis. the moment the world cup comes around they actually play to their potential.
