I love this rifle because I can ride my motorcycle to the range with a pistol, this rifle, a bit of ammo and a rubber bouncing target in a bookbag. My range is 45 minutes down the interstate so this setup cuts gas out of the cost of range time.

I got one of these towards the end of June and I love it...now. When I first got it, my first really close-up inspection at home revealed the rear sights to be skewed so badly that the edge of the dovetail was actually bent and curled up. Additionally, the first time I pulled the trigger on a live round it failed to fire. I called Ruger and they handled it quickly, thoroughly and no cost to me at all. The fit and function are now almost like a handcrafted gun. I'm a happy Ruger customer.

hickok45 - I'm a HUGH fan of yours and love your videos and have written to you many times. One thing I would like to note however, PLEASE do NOT be a caliber snob!!!! More people are killed every year with .22 bullets than any other caliber. They are inexpensive to purchase and provide very little recoil so their ability to kill is actually far greater than many higher caliber weapons. As an owner of many rifles including a Sig 516 Gen ll FDE and a Henry .45-70 AW, I can tell you as a fact that it is much easier to zero in on a moving target with this gun then just about any other higher caliber weapon unless you are talking about an AR-15 which of course was designed to protect us from evil....AMEN!!!!!! Other than that, please keep up the great videos and make note that we all need to bear arms to protect our Republic....................

Buy one of these along with a Henry AR-7 - and just put both of them away for a rainy day!!!!! BTW, the AR-7 will fit neatly in the Ruger's bag so no need for an extra bag and both will fire the same ammo. Outcome?? Heaven!!!

Hickok I keep up with your videos pretty good but I was slow to watch this one. I'm glad to see you coming around and liking the 10/22 better now days. My dad bought me one as my first rifle years ago. My 1st long gun was a 410 shotgun because he wanted to watch me a little longer safety wise before I got the added range of a rifle. Anyhow, dad passed away n 09 and I would really like to see you do a video on his favorite 22 if you have or can get your hands on one. That would be a Remington nylon 66. Later they ha the 77 which was magazine fed instead of tube fed. I know enough of folks around here like them so I think it would make for a great video if you could pull it off. There was even a exact copy made by cbc. I'm actually not too far down the road and also a TN resident so if you need some help I might even loan you one to do a video, just a thought anyways. Life is good!

Well I know this is 10 years down the road now, but my 2 favorite mods for the 10/22 are the Tandemkross bolt release, makes it so you just pull back on the lever and the bolt goes home, it’s less than $12, and an easy install after watching the video on the website.. Probably the most annoying thing about a 10/22 easily solved. And second is the Ruger extended mag release, it’s not huge and obtrusive like some of the aftermarket ones, but really aids in a mag change.

Wow, hickok, your aim is superb! I just got one of these partly due to your videos, but I haven't shot it much because of the stupid 22 shortage (november 2015 tampa). I tried some 3 shot bursts like yours at the range (not supposed to do more than 2, heh), and I can say with due certainty that you're a hell of a shot man. And you're standing!

I had a 10-22 takedown when I first watched this video back in 2012. I just found and re-watched this video and found an anomaly I missed in 2012. At the 11:01 mark of this video when Hickok was shooting at the dog targets indeed when he was done shooting and brought the gun down, an animal of some kind ran across up by the treeline. And again the animal comes back at the very top of the screen at about the 11:15 mark. I can't tell what kind of animal for sure, may be a dog or small Coyote. What do you viewers think it is?

Yes, it has been called the assassin's caliber of choice. And the largest Grizzly bear kill ever recorded was with a .22LR. You can kill anything in North America with it, but shot placement is the key. You definitely don't want to have to use it for self defense, but you could take any game animal with it in a survival situation if you had to...though killing deer with a .22 is illegal.

It really depends on where you live and the laws for buying a firearm. In Ohio all you need is a clear background and be the right age. You also have to fill out a background check form gun shops will have that in the shop. Check out your state laws you can even probably ask your local gun store.

Hickok, if you're looking for better quality ammo and still wanna save some pennies. CCI makes a 375 bulk pack called "Tactical 22". It's just a bulk pack of the 40gr mini-mags usually costs about 25-35% less than buying individual 100rd boxes. Keep an eye out!

It just came out this year. Even has the 1964-2014 50 year stamped on the bolt. Ruger listened to the requests of current 10/22 take down owners. Your search for a near perfect take down 22LR carbine has come to a finale with the Tactical take down model.

I can believe it. I've put about 1000 rds thru mine. Cleaned it once at 500 rds. I only use CCI mini mags but I haven't had a single malfunction with the stock Ruger BX-10 magazines. But I had a few jams in one day while trying "other" magazines and another day when I tried some old ammo! So the magazine and ammo can definitely make a difference. With CCI Mini Mags and stock Ruger magazines I just don't expect any issues.

Well I'm Finnish and I'm a regular subscriber, the gun laws are somewhat tight here and getting tighter because of the recent 'incidents' with few mentalists taking their .22 to school and start blasting. There are a lot of guns though, I think most of them are unregistered leftovers from the war passed down the generations but I could be wrong. Basically you have to belong to a "gun club" to own one as a sport shooter or a collector and even then the calibers are not very big.

I take public transport to the range and I dont want to carry a rifle case on a bus. The takedown 12222 fits in a ordinary bookbag. Plus at 40.00 a box 9mm plus 8% Philadelphia sales tax and 12.00 to ship to my house this a low cost option for a range day. Large caliber ammo is in short supply in Philadelphia. The main reason for a take-down model is probably not what you would think... The action screw that holds the receiver to the stock, is a bit of a weak point in the design of this rifle in that it doesn't have a proper bedding block and there is a big range in the amount of pressure you can exert of that screw, and that torque will make a HUGE difference in the accuracy and repeatability of the rifle. On a normal version, one has to disassemble the entire rile in order to clean it, which means unless you have a good torque wrench, you are not very likely to reproduce the tension on that action screw when you re-assemble the rifle and there goes your accuracy. But because the take-down model removes the barrel from the receiver, it is possible to clean the barrel without completely disassembling the riffle. You will still need to take everything apart from time to time, to clean the receiver and bolt, but you can likely extend those deep-cleaning sessions by a fair margin by being able to clean the barrel. On a normal model, the best you can do is pass a bore-snake through the ejection port of the receiver or via the mag well, and that does help but it's not a full clean. Honestly, it's a shame nobody every made a AR-style top receiver for the 10-22, where accuracy wouldn't be affected by disassembly. I know for many it's little more than a toy, but with proper torque settings and correct ammo, you can get clover leaf groups at 50 all day long! That sort of accuracy can make a big difference if you are relying on this for survival, and if it were more easily repeatable, you could. But without proper torque setting, your groups can vary from 1/4" to 1.5" and more!

I hardly ever clean my Ruger 10/22 and never have any trouble with it.:) I have at east 3,000 rounds through it since last cleaning, with cheap ammo even. I guess I'll clean it soon :)

That is a crazy dear. Maybe it is deaf. I love shooting my Marlin model 60 and have never had a malfunction even using cheap Remington ammo. It just a fun gun to take plinking.

After watching many of your videos, I realize that one of the things I like is that you hit your target. Watching someone shoot 10 rounds at a gong and only hit it once wouldn't be fun.

I love mine. I like the take down feature because I keep it in my truck. I e got groundhog problem at a couple different place around the farm. It's inconvenient to have the rifle visible all the time but with it broke down nobody knows its there.

Can you get ahold of the Survival 10/22? I'm buying one and I'd hate to have purchased a gun without watching you shoot it...

Doesn't the Takedown come with a carry case? Also, the Magpul Backpacker is a neat way to store and carry the gun with ammo in the stock, but adds another cost to the package.

There is a kit you can get to convert a 10-22 into a takedown and you can get a stock you actually like for it. What you end up with is a little smaller and a lot lighter , higher quality and cooler than the store bought model.

Only reason I like my 10/22 take down better than the original is its easier to clean with a rod
