Lets be honest- the female lead was gonna leave her fiance from the get go cause she wasn't in love with him to begin with- she liked him but did not love him. It was just an arrangement. It was a good move to make Eris the villain of the movie. It's a rare occasion where they bad guy doesn't *need* a reason to cause trouble. Eris is the Goddess of Discord, of course she gonna fuck things up on a whim. Yet they give so much personality in the way she does things. I love the way she's animated, like a living smoke cloud, especially with the way her hair is always flowing. Just, everything about her is gorgeous is the most chaotic way. It's so appropriate.

Eris is a goddess of chaos, she lives to stir shit up... so thats what she did in the movie. And mythologically speaking its not unusual for a god to gamble with a mortal in a competition or something. In this case she gambled that Sinbad would never really go to his own execution. Which he did, thankfully for Sinbad, he paid attention at the whole "bound by your word" thing. So basically she gambled and made bad choices. But in the end she still stirred up some shit. So win/win. Also yes, Eris is glorious and we need more villains like her.

Another fun fact, in Greek mythology the gods messing with/punishing mortals was actually the norm, right up there with Zeus sleeping with anything that moved, seriously he was a horn dog in the worst ways. Ironically Hades was about the whole god in the pantheon who I don't think made a habit of punishing mortals and those he did REALLY had it coming, he was also the most loyal to his chosen beau and absolutely did not mess around, sadly Christianity demonized him cause underworld = hell in their minds, hence he has often been portrayed as a more satan like character rather than the super chill god he actually was. Got to love how Eris just owns her meddling, no petty punishing of mortals who upset her, no she just did it all for the funnies.

20:27 He's is in love with her......but it's the unselfish kind. He's more concerned with her happiness than about 'getting' her. Even though he'd be a good husband to her and even though she'd never be really unhappy with him, he knows it's not the life she wants and that she'd always feel some sort of regret not going with Sinbad. He enjoys sailing and wanted to live a life on the seas with Sinbad but he's a dutiful and honourable man and his conscience won't let him do that. He cares more about other people than himself. So he's letting two of the people he cares most about in the world, his best friend and the woman he loves be happy and live the life that he wants. Even if he is broken hearted he can bear it knowing they'll be happy.

She makes a flat earth joke and ends up missing the actual flat earth joke in the scene bc she was talking lmao Tbh the story, for a kids movie at least, seemed solid. Eris does what she does bc she's literally the Goddess of chaos and discord. Not a complex villain but at least very believable in why she loves doing what she does. Marina and Sinbad simply clashed because of their histories; Marina had no trust in someone who supposedly betrayed Proteus and literally intended to run off and leave his friend to die so her being harsh on him made lots of sense. Sinbad meanwhile, had repressed feelings for her but knew it would never happen out of respect for Proteus, so he acts in the complete opposite way as a means to keep repressing his feelings. He knew they'd never see eye to eye so he lets himself act the way he is perceived as, kinda like that one quote from Nick in Zootopia "if they're only ever going to see me as shifty and sly, then that's what I'll be." The stakes are present too, which I don't get how it was missed for you. Proteus was literally about to die because he was willing to believe Sinbad, those are the stakes. Since even when Sinbad is portrayed as a black hearted thief, the film progresses to show no matter how much he pretends, he simply in good conscience can't let it happen and it becomes more obvious as the film goes on. He even had that second mate guy point it out the first moment Sinbad intended to run.

cgi is actually often used in 2D animated movies to cut down on animation costs. the technique was used mostly during scenes with a lot of background characters to animate that werent the main focus of the shot so you werent meant to notice the drawn animation before you see the cgi. it used to be a lot less noticeable but now that we're used to insanely good cgi animation older cgi stands out a lot more now. background cgi was also less noticeable on older tvs due to something called CRT monitor fuzz

Some answers about Eris & the mythological motifs: The oldest account of Eris' background comes from the Ancient Greek author Hesiod. First, there was only Chaos, the shapeless, cosmic womb from which the 4 most important deities of creation took on form. Nyx (Night), Erebos (Darkness), Eros (Desire) & Gaia (Earth). Putting Gaia's storyline aside, Nyx and Erebos REALLY "made use" of Desire and got a whole lot of (mostly unpleasant) children like Thanatos (Death), Hypnos (Sleep), and also Eris (Discord). Eris herself, with only gloomy and chaotic energy in her DNA, went on to create Ponos (Hardship), Lethe (Loss), Algea (Pain), Phonos (Murder) & many more horrors. Eris is pretty much the Kris Jenner of Greek mythology and, kinda ironically, keeps using her "kids" so that her counterpart, the goddess Harmonia (Harmony & Peace), is even able to exist. The Ancient Greeks believed in a devine duality- we need pain and strife to know what order and bliss feel like in the first place. Sirens: Originally, Sirens were monstrous creatures, half-bird & half-woman, who dwelled on rocks on the open ocean. They posessed beautiful, enchanting voices that would make sailors lose their minds in order to then kill them & sink their ships. In ancient art, they were depicted as either having more of a bird or female anatomy. It was only in medieval times, when they were first shown with fish tails like mermaids or Okeanids (sea nymphs). To artists of the middle ages it made probably more sense to show a creature of the sea in this form. And it really stuck in our conscious mind, more so than the original bird-woman. Tartaros: Tartaros (Doom), according to Hesiod, was another child of Chaos. He first became a personification of the underworld itself and later on was described as the deepest part of Hades' realm. Being also the home of Erebos (Darkness), Tartaros was a place of torture in the afterlife, reserved only for the most wicked souls and those who offended the Gods. Texts state, it would take 9 days for a falling anvil to reach Tartaros, so it wouldn't be as easy to get there as it is shown in "Sinbad". Moreover, it'd be full of screaming souls getting tortured by the Erynies (Latin: Furies), female demons of terror and vengeance. Not really a vacation destination... *This isn't meant to be a "know-it-all-Hermione-Granger-comment". I just wanted to respond to, perhaps, some open questions. Though Hesiod's version is considered the oldest one, Greek mythology is not a bible and there are many more variatons about these origins. :)

It's rather short with about 150 pages for roughly 15 bucks (2nd hand perhaps even cheaper), yet it uses OG ancient sources, explaining the meaning of each story in a profound but entertaining way and sums up every chapter with a "Keep in mind" section. Since they were a bunch of gorgeous diva's they all made him promises, but Aphrodite then promises him the most beautiful woman, so he takes that offer. I think there are two main reasons why I really, really like this movie and since you asked, I'll tell! The first is lumped together as the villain and the visuals since so many of the visuals are Eris's doing. I don't know any other movie that has a godlike character who manipulates matter like she does. It's absolutely amazing to watch. From turning constellations into monsters to blowing on the earth and freezing it over with her breath, to pretending to be Sinbad by CREATING A SKIN OF HIM AND CLIMBING INSIDE IT. A lazier screenwriter would've just had her shapeshift into him, you know? The second thing I love is the characters. They're written kinda similar to a charming old story like what Sinbad originally was or like Grimms fairytales are. Not hugely complex characters or plot but the world feels like another planet in its own way, where the laws of real and not aren't the same as our own. It reads kinda like a storybook in that way and that's a pretty unique experience, I think. Sorry to drone on about it! I just really like the movie and its vibe!

Alright, good reaction! Sorry that this film wasn’t exactly your cup of tea! Honestly, for this film being DreamWorks last hand-drawn animated film, it definitely went out with a bang. As far as Proteus goes, I can see why he let Marina go. Maybe deep down, he did love her. Still, he also knew that Marina loved sailing, and that she likely loved Sinbad (seeing how she was hugging Spike, and crying when it looked like Sinbad was going to be beheaded). Honestly, I felt like he handled having to let Marina go in a better, and more mature way than say Quasimodo did in the Disney version of Hunchback Of Notre Dame with having to let Esmeralda go. That is seeing as Quasimodo might have acted a little too childish in that situation than Proteus in the one with Marina. I also liked Sinbad’s crew, especially Rats, and Kale. I also loved how we got some backstory on Sinbad, and Proteus’ friendship, and why Sinbad left in the first place. In all honesty, I felt like this film had better writing than say The Road To El Dorado in terms of developing some of the characters more, and handling certain conflicts better, and having things go around full circle in a better way. I heard someone one say that Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas could have been a live-action film, and I happen to agree. Well, thanks for reacting to this film once again!

@@matthewcline2728 My opinion isn't simply due to El Dorado having songs, it's just a funnier movie with more beautiful animation, and I think the story is more interesting. Also El Dorado's ending feels more self-contained, even tho they were hinting at the possibility of more adventures

10:13 Well at some point became associated with mermaids (generally evil) though the later German version of them called the Lorelei (though I think there was only the one Lorelei and she had a broken heart as a reason to lure sailors to their deaths with her singing, I only heard of the poem but I don't think I read it) were women who live on small islands in the middle of the sea, but originally they were birds with women's heads, not sure when the change came about. But regardless as to what they looked like the whole point about them is that they sing so beautifully that anyone who hears them will jump overboard to swim to them and will drown (either because they frequent dangerous waters or because next to no one in Ancient Greece could actually swim) trying to reach the sound. When Rick Riordan wrote about hem in his Percy Jackson book series he added an additional part of their spells (basically) that you'd see what you want most int he world when you heard them sing. The only two cases (apart from this movie - I think originally they worked on everyone regardless of gender) in the greek myths of people overcoming their voices, one was Orpheus who was on the Argo with Jason and who actually managed to out-sing the sirens (some say he was the son of the god Apollo and a mortal queen, others say he was the son of the Muse Calliope and a mortal king but that Apollo taught him how to make and play a lyre and even let him touch his own, but regardless of his parentage he was half a god and his singing and music (lyre mostly) was supposedly so beautiful that it would make wild animals curl up at his feet like lap-dogs, rivers break their beds, trees bend their branches or fully uproot themselves to get closer to him and rocks weep or dance depending on what he was playing, and it was so beautiful that he nearly managed to bring his wife Eurydice back from the dead), and the other was Odysseus who wanted to hear them out of curiosity and had his men bind him to the mast and ordered them to stuff their ears with wax and to keep rowing and not untie him once the wax was in their ears, soon as he heard the sirens he started thrashing and demanding that they release him but they couldn't hear him and they sailed through the sirens territory unharmed. In both cases the sirens threw themselves against the rocks in rage.

It was one of my favorites movies when I was younger and I still watch it time to time to have some fun and relax a bit but I think that's it, a funny movie to see to relax, with not a very complex history or stuff like that. I was felling a little sad that you could enjoy the movie because of you hit expectations but im relief that you could see it at the end and liked the movie, even if it was just a bit. I'm loving you channel, have already watched 4 videos and ready to watch the Hercules one too ♥

there’s this interesting video essay that talks about the history of the movie and like the original script and character relationships? Like I’ve always enjoyed the movie, Marina was so bad ass, and Eris???? My beloved 😍😍 but anyways the video gave more backstory and like depth to the movie after the fact, like the incomplete plot you felt? Sort of explains it there

Wish I got here the day it was uploaded, but better late than never. As for why the plot, stakes and Marina were so bad in this movie; you can thank the producers for that. There was originally supposed to be more back story for Marina's character, that she had a fling with Sinbad when they were younger but got into an arranged marriage to Proteus. Also she loved the sea because Sinbad showed her how the sea represented freedom, but she was confined to the palace life of royalty. Unfortunately the producers thought that the complicated love triangle story would be too mature for younger audiences so they went for simplicity and quick transitions to the next action scenes. Little else of the movie was that different from what was shown aside from less CGI, but this was the Era of CGI experimentation. I still enjoy the movie for nostalgia, but it's not without many flaws.
@RukiyaReacts2 жыл бұрын
At least you’re here now, better late than never haha. And thank you for the info!! That makes so much sense as to why I felt the story was a bit weak. I wish the producers hadn’t simplified it or at least made a sequel to expand the characters. Overall, I think it was a good adventure movie, but it could have been better.

I honestly really love the movie. Especially Eris, i think she is such a good and hot villain😍. The only thing i have to agree on iis that the story line was pretty weak, it could of had a refreshing touch to it, for example show the past, give a lil more explanation of the plot or just in general explain what the fuck is going on with Sinbad and the fiance! 😂 (Also it kinda made me question the movie at the beggining, when there was the fight scene with the lobster/octopus. It just doesn't blend with the movie!

Yeah, I agree Sinbad is relaxing and fun! I went into this movie thinking it was going to be like Treasure Planet. In that movie I felt they flushed out the characters so well with dialogue and flash backs and had me emotionally invested. Sinbad for sure is a more light hearted movie compared to Treasure Planet. 😅

Honestly I get your feelings about this film: Eris is awesome, Proteus got screwed, and I wasn't big on the journey/obstacles they encountered (except the sirens). It would've been fun if they involved more of the golden apple story if they were involving Greek Mythology.

@@RukiyaReacts In short, Eris threw a golden apple to the "fairiest one of all," causing a fight between three other goddesses. They found a judge who gave the apple to the goddess of love in exchange for the most beautiful woman in the world, causing the Trojan war.
