Just out of curiosity, how would it work for verbal adjectives that do not end in -ax? For instance, if the term for "spacious" did not end in -ax, how would one say "a river spacious of ships" or "a river big enough to hold ships?" What case would be used for the term "ships?"

Only when they are in the role of predicate as , "Claudia est pulchra" - Claudia is beautiful , here 'pulchra' stands alone but still abides by its nature of qualitative description . I would recommand you , to see Rule 2 and 3 of this series they cover this brilliantly. Hope it helps
