HI James, thank you such a lovely video, I use the rule of 3's in Australian folk art painting, now trying out more art journaling, less prep, more intuitive painting and love the bright colours. Now I can practice the rule of 3's with my watercolours thanks to your inspiration! I am in my mid 60's and love art journaling with my grandchildren. love your little stories too oh and you cat!

My daughter is a photographer who got into graphic design and I proof them before she posts them to sell in her Etsy shop and I always use the rule of 3. She was like where did you learn that? Scrapbooking. Lol. Jane needs to sell refill pans. No one is gonna run out of the black or white. It holds me back because I don't want to use it up, and don't want to live without Buzzy, BFF or 70's. I've fallen in love with several of the neutral colors also. I also want a primary palette. More pallets and refills!

Not only do I follow the "rule of 3," but I also follow the rule of "odds," like 5, 7, 9, etc. items. Black, Brown, and White aren't considered colors, along with all their various tints and shades, but neutrals, so they aren't really included in your rule of 3, if you use them for accents like you did with the dots. Black pops bright colors from the background, brown is good for shading, and white for highlights. I enjoyed watching your process video. I'd be freaking if I had that much water on my page! smile! I use a water-brush myself.

What pens are you using over the watercolor? I always managed to dry out markers.... mostly with acrylics but curious. Love your art! Very organic and colorful!
@JamesLukeBurkeCreative7 жыл бұрын
a mixture. Sharpie pens, Le Pen felt tip pens, brush pens, uniball signo in white, POSCA paint markers. I find watercolour to be pretty easy to work with once its fully dry :)

James, I can't tell you how happy I am that you made this video!! This is just my style but I couldn't quite get it like you do and this has inspired me and really pulled it all together for me. Can you please tell me two things... how do I know which colors to put together so that when they blend they won't look like mud? And what type of marker/pen are you using to put your white dots down?
@katericochran46347 жыл бұрын
Pebbie J Dyan Ravely gives a great, great video explaining paint colors and which colors when combined create mud. If you haven't checked out her channel, she's an awesome, creative and colorful person who I think explains things in a way that is easy to understand because she uses her own paint "jars" to explain. Like she'll grab three colors and say, these colors go well together but if you add this color (and she takes another color jar) it will create mud. For me, because of the way I learn, it's the best explanation I have seen. But I'm a visual learner. Hope that helps.
@renirn71017 жыл бұрын
Pebbie J mud colours are I think purple and orange and red and purple purple and yellow. He used neon colours but also in a way primary colours which you can mix anything from but I'm not a great teacher.
