G'day Friends,
Welcome to another DAVENPARTY DESIGN TEAM PROJECT!
I wanted to throw together a quick and simple-to-follow tutorial on creating a journal spread that is both interesting & harmonious.
Let me know how you go, and please share on social media, I'd love to see what you all get up to!

HI James, thank you such a lovely video, I use the rule of 3's in Australian folk art painting, now trying out more art journaling, less prep, more intuitive painting and love the bright colours. Now I can practice the rule of 3's with my watercolours thanks to your inspiration! I am in my mid 60's and love art journaling with my grandchildren. love your little stories too oh and you cat!

My daughter is a photographer who got into graphic design and I proof them before she posts them to sell in her Etsy shop and I always use the rule of 3. She was like where did you learn that? Scrapbooking. Lol. Jane needs to sell refill pans. No one is gonna run out of the black or white. It holds me back because I don't want to use it up, and don't want to live without Buzzy, BFF or 70's. I've fallen in love with several of the neutral colors also. I also want a primary palette. More pallets and refills!

Fun :) Many thankings. One of the reasons the rule of three works is because we're drawn to asymmetry more than symmetry, tho like yourself I do occasionally mis-remember stuff! (That reminds me of a pupil who used to say 'mis-appeared' instead of disappeared. Think that makes much more sense tbh...oops, as usual I digress) Anyway, back thru the mists of time when I was studying display and design we were always taught to create asymmetrical designs/displays because symmetry won't make sales apparently. Now on to something I learned when studying to teach art: White is the absence of colour, and black is the absence of light. Technically speaking. So, you weren't breaking your rule of three by using white ;)

Not only do I follow the "rule of 3," but I also follow the rule of "odds," like 5, 7, 9, etc. items. Black, Brown, and White aren't considered colors, along with all their various tints and shades, but neutrals, so they aren't really included in your rule of 3, if you use them for accents like you did with the dots. Black pops bright colors from the background, brown is good for shading, and white for highlights. I enjoyed watching your process video. I'd be freaking if I had that much water on my page! smile! I use a water-brush myself.

You really made me laugh when you told about the "fear" of being gay. It took me a long time to find out why I was such a Tom girl 😜🤣 I'm very sure I don't know these ice creams 😄. I do love rainbows though 😁. Your video about the rule of thirds is so inspiring! I know about the rule through photography, but this is a whole new level. Definitely going to try it and I will tag you on IG if I did! Your pages look so gorgeous, but they always do 😘. It's a good thing for my bank account I only see this video an hour after I ordered from an online shop that also carries these stamps 🙈😄. Going to put them on my shop account's wish list for the next time. You know, I was in doubt to add them to my cart or not 🙈. The new fur baby looks so cute with his bow tie 😻 I still need to make one for my cat, but the bunny ears hat I made him last Easter wasn't a big success, so I don't have high hopes 😄. Teddy always wants to play along when I'm making art. So not helpful, but cute anyway 😻

the fear of ordering that ice cream was so strong! hahaha, nowadays I couldn't care less (thank goodness!) My husband uses the rule of thirds in his photography too, it just hadn't clicked to me to translate it into an art journal spread. Although I dont do this format a lot I think its a nice easy starting point for people looking for a step by step to get something harmonious :) We just bought our cats Halloween costumes, I dont want to give anything away, but lets just say there is a small wig involved... hahaha

James, I can't tell you how happy I am that you made this video!! This is just my style but I couldn't quite get it like you do and this has inspired me and really pulled it all together for me. Can you please tell me two things... how do I know which colors to put together so that when they blend they won't look like mud? And what type of marker/pen are you using to put your white dots down?
@katericochran4634

Pebbie J Dyan Ravely gives a great, great video explaining paint colors and which colors when combined create mud. If you haven't checked out her channel, she's an awesome, creative and colorful person who I think explains things in a way that is easy to understand because she uses her own paint "jars" to explain. Like she'll grab three colors and say, these colors go well together but if you add this color (and she takes another color jar) it will create mud. For me, because of the way I learn, it's the best explanation I have seen. But I'm a visual learner. Hope that helps.
@renirn7101
