Looking Back at Nintendo in 2024

2024 was surprisingly decent for being the 8th year. How do you feel about Nintendo’s output?

I'd have to agree, Nintendo had a pretty good year, lots of good stuff, but it does look like the switch is starting to wind down a little.

Another Code was pretty underrated and TTYD was very good but in terms of new games Emio through Brothership was probably my favourite string of games in all 8 years

So to me, there are three parts to the hype cycle surrounding a game. The latter two parts are the release (aka picking your copy up and finishing it the game) and then theres unpacking what you experienced in the following weeks. The first part is the hype and anticipation. And in terms of hype and anticipation, i think Nintendos 2024 was like a 9 or 10. Metroid prime 4 reveal, switch 2 on the horizon, and a bunch of smaller titles to enjoy as your overwhelmed by all the hype. In the hype and atmosphere sense, 2024 was a pretty solid year

2024 has been rough for Nintendo. Another Code Recollection, Endless Ocean Luminous, Mario vs DK remake, Peach Showtime, Famicom Detective Emio, Paper Mario ttyd, SMP Jamboree, Zelda EoW, Mario & Luigi Brothership all are underperformed in sales. Third party games on Nintendo keep flopping too. Sad indeed

What do you mean underperformed in sales? What was the expectation for Endless Ocean Luminous or a Mario vs. DK remake?

At least we didn't get a ton of Wii U ports like in 2018. We had least got remakes/remasters from older consoles plus new games. They didn't really release bigger games until the very end of 2018 and we still got amazing new games at the end of this year!

@@t3mp3k-o9m PS handheld isn't confirmed, it's just rumored and XBOX is losing a lot of money right now. Also, these handhelds won't launch for a several years. I can see Steamdeck 2 being very successful though and it's hard to say if the next console will flop because we don't know what it is yet. Don' jump to conclusions just yet and don't go off rumors or speculation for the PS handheld. I don't trust the switch 2 rumors either but we will just have to wait and see. I never even mentioned switch 2 in the comments so I'm not sure why you brought that up.

I played my switch so little this year. Really only played paper Mario. I’m in desperate need of prime 4 and I really hope it has a switch 2 version.

Same. Like I mention here the year basically boiled down to one game for me so I didn’t play on the console much at all. Which is okay. Next gen is around the corner.

Echos is the most underrated game of the century. It’s so innovative and clever. You can literally take a nap in the middle of a boss battle. The echos are so much fun to use and it’s always a thrill to add a new echo to your roster. You can literally become link for a few seconds because that’s all you need. You can also level him up for the first time ever. The game is very easy almost border line a cozy game. But as a first Zelda game i think it’s perfect at what it does. Sure it’s a short and easy game and you will never get stuck in the game and maybe only worth $40 but what it does it does extremely well… could you imagine If they used the echo idea in a 3d world… that would be insane!

Still can't stop thinking about narrative of this game after about several months I've completed it. While it's visual novel, it's definitely quite good interactive immersive sim of being detective. I hope more people will try out at least free demo at Eshop.

Hard agree on the assessment on this 8th Year of Nintendo Switch. It's pretty solid and that's quite a win for Nintendo because HOW CAN YOU TOP THAT EPIC 2023 LINEUP??? Not just for Nintendo but for Sony, Microsoft, and PC. To have a bit of downer of year and still have games to release for fans of all kind of genre to enjoy is still a pretty good year in a lead-up to next gen console. So yeah, it's a B grade for this year. As for myself, I bought at least 7 new games this year in order: Paper Mario Thousand Years Door, Ace Attorney Investigation Collection, Outer Wilds, Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, World of Goo 2, Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe, and Mario & Luigi Brothership. They're all great in their own rights and I'm perfectly happy with it. Hopefully there'll be some announcements of new games for the Game Awards, though I'm not holding my breath if they didn't.

Another Code Recollection needs to be treated like an entirely new game, it has almost nothing in coming with the original games. You should give it a try Rob, you would like it, something new to experience outside of your own personal norm.

This year is definitely one of my favorite Switch years, I'd say a lot of the Mario RPGS and Mario spinoffs carried it for me because of how passionate I am about Mario Spinoffs in general, the biggest releases for me was Endless Ocean and Mario & Luigi Brothership, having those series return after years the same year I turned 21 felt like a crazy time.

2024 wasn't the worst year for Nintendo. Certainly not the greatest either. But we did get some bangers. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Super Mario Party Jamboree & Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom are the top 3 best games of 2024 for Nintendo. And if we wonna count Third Party Games into the system, Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD Remake & Sonic X Shadow Generations are also worth it.

Middle of the road. Echoes of Wisdom and 1,000 Year Door were the only big hits. Princess Peach, Luigi's Mansion 2, and NES World Championship sold well for what they were. Endless Ocean was the only big flop.

The most underlooking releases this year by Nintendo are surely Another Code Recollection and Endless Ocean Luminous. I love AC and i think it's a flawed but precious IP since DS era, and i would love to see another Cing games in some form of remaster (Hotel dusk & last window especially), but due to poor sales i think it won't happen. Endless ocean i think is very particular, i know the series from the wii ones but i haven't played this one, probably for someone is something unique but also this title has done very very poor sales, it may bet the end for these experimental franchises. A late switch title i think can be expected is a Rhythm Heaven title, one of my favorites, i hope there will be another one in the future

zelda echoes of wisdom i think i sit at an 8/10, 10/10 if it was on a DS so that switching echoes would be SIGNIFICANTLY improved with an always on demand second screen.

You have to make the gameplay significantly different enough in order to justify having the main character be someone else. Think of Luigi's Mansion for example, it's completely different from traditional Mario games so it makes sense for the main character to be someone else, in this case Luigi. If the gameplay is too similar to traditional Zelda games, then it makes no sense to have Zelda or anyone else be the playable character, you may as well just play as Link at that point.

This year I've bought on switch: Prince of persia the Lost crown (who is multi plat), great game, I would give it a 8 or 9/10. My game of the year. Another code recollection which was fine, something like a 6.5/10. Endless ocean luminous, which was disappoiting, something like a 6/10 if I'm being generous. Paper Mario the thousand year door, a good game, something like a 7-8/10. Mario party jamboree which was fun, something like a 7-8/10. Romancing saga 2 which I have not played yet. I plan to play echoes of wisdom but I'm not in hurry, it's not going to disappear from the store soon. 2024 was a fine year to me, half the games I have played this year were old games I had not try yet

I played Princess of Persia on the PS5 and the game is almost a 10/10 for me. It blew me away.

Weak year, played nothing, bought nothing. Ttyd is great for people who haven’t played it and brothership is cool for people who still like Mario and Luigi games. But I’ve personally moved on from those games despite loving them in my childhood. Looking forward to next year. Edit: I did get Mario party for occasional family fun. That’s about it.

What are you looking forward to next year ? I don't think Metroid is going to save the whole year. I think this year there was a little something for everyone at least. And no one can deny Mario party it's always a good time. Though the mini game selection is pretty weak.

Decent year for Nintendo overall as a final switch year however it wasn’t a Nintendo year for my personal tastes I played M&L brothership and it wasn’t that good to be honest. I did enjoy EoW a lot but I had to rush that game unfortunately because October was packed with other games. But I’m not here to say it was bad I think Nintendo did their best and certainly better than the final Wii u year lol And so the highlight of 2024 was probably E3 and Metroid prime 4 announced

There’s nothing new for nintendo in 2024. Paper Mario TTYD and Luigi Mansion 2 were the games i owned. Gonna play echoes of wisdom, mario party jamboree and mario luigi brothership very soon. Disappointing 2024 for me: princess Peach and Mario & Luigi not my kind of games, ttyd and echoes had degraded performances so i skipped them, Luigi Mansion 2 was a shameless lazy port sold at full price, only 1 direct… and most importantly no Switch 2, really it felt like a “filler” year. The only good surprises were Jamboree and the Metroid Prime 4 teaser.
