This Vietnamese commander ends of saving his ass at his trial in the end by saying that if he were in his shoes he would have done the same thing to save his own men.
@meganoob124 жыл бұрын
Dean Hibler and he even salutes his former enemy when Samuel L. Jackson leaves the court. That Vietnamese commander knew that they just did what was necessary to save their men. The Vietnamese would have done the same and even worse to the G.I.s. This movie poses an interesting question. Is it ok for soldiers of a liberal democracy to step down to the level of the enemy by committing war crimes, just to save your own men. That is a moral Paradoxon I guess.

Rob Wernet while this is a good scene, and the answer is understandable, it poses the question: These Marines are from the US, a free, liberal democracy. The constitution of the US even states that all men are created equal. Is it thus justified that you take those rights away from somebody, because you consider him the enemy? Is it morally coherent, to justify that by the enemies actions (the Vietnamese weren't hesitating to commit all sorts of crimes)? While I can see the justification for the Marines in question, it still remains a difficult question.

Haven't seen this yet, but I'm hoping there is sufficient Nam' footage to keep me interested? And is this the movie where Samuel jackson, is having dinner with his family retired or home from the military, and argues and nearly beats up his son, for his son wearing an earring?
@rprince4189 жыл бұрын
+360SRH 2 This scene is actually just a flashback at the beginning. It shows how good friends Samuel L Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones are. The rest of the movie takes place in present day (well, present for 2000, when the film was released). Samuel L Jackson goes on a mission in Yemen to rescue the American ambassador from the U.S Embassy when it is being assaulted by terrorists. After ordering the Marines to open fire on a crowd filled with civilians, the rest of the movie is a court room drama with Tommy Lee Jones trying to prove if there were terrorists in the crowd and if Jackson acted appropriately. The two action scenes (Vietnam and Yemen) are the only WAR scenes in the movie, but there is a lot of suspense, drama and excitement. It is actually very interesting, and does a great job depicting our troops in a positive light while at the same time showing the hard choices they have to make to protect others. My dad (an Air Force veteran) and I watch it all the time. Jackson in this movie is a bachelor and career Marine, so he has no son. The movie you may be thinking of is 2006's Home of the Brave. I thought that movie was incredibly boring, so I never finished it, but I do remember he had a son in it and he had some problems with him. I'm not saying THAT is a bad movie, everyone has there own tastes. I am just saying I cannot confirm 100%. But I do highly recommend this movie. It is made by the same guy who directed The Exorcist and The French Connection.
@Vishonov8 жыл бұрын
You're wrong, man. Tommy Lee Jones' character is a washed out Marine colonel who is a crappy JAG officer who does have a son, and is also the son of a retired Marine general with Jones's son hating the military and never following in his father's or his grandfather's footsteps. Jones' character was about to retire when Jackson's character called upon him to protect his innocence not because he was a good lawyer (which he wasn't) but because he was a combat officer in Vietnam with Jackson's character and who can testify as to what a combat veteran needs to endure in battle in comparison with other Marine lawyers who never set foot on the battlefield. The movie you are referring to is probably The Hunted, where Jones' character is a former special operations instructor who hates flying and looking for his former protege, Benicio Del Toro, who has gone mental and wanted for a double homicide.

LHDs and LHAs are operated by the Navy. They have a handful of Marine aviators on board and Marine group troops, but the Navy also transports Army equipment. Also, are you going to tell me that: M1A1 Abrams > M1A2 Abrams TUSK? AH1 Super Cobra > AH64 Apache? F/A-18C/D Hornet > F/A-18E/F Super Hornet? LAV-25 > M2/M3 Bradley? AV-8B > A-10? The list goes on and on. The Marines basically get the Navy's budgetary discards, hence why everything they have is inferior to other branches equipment.

Another keyboard warrior mouthing off about a subject you clearly don't know shit about. Marines are fighting men. I was raised on Camp Pendleton. of course, guys who are Navy SEAL's, Delta Force, and Army SF are more trained up because our Special Forces have far more training for obvious reasons. you obviously never served a day in your life.
@87frankstank10 жыл бұрын
I would say that every branch of the US armed forces are elite or have elite elements. I mean every US Marine gets the same training as an US Army Ranger. And they're just one particular unit in the vast arsenal of the US Army. Also, every Marine is a rifleman. From the guy on the frontline to the guy working on a helicopter to the guy peeling potatoes, they were all trained the same. You can say the US Marine Corps doesn't get a lot funding or first priority on newer weapons, vehicles, aircraft etc etc, it doesn't mean that they're inferior. The US Marine Corps wrote the book on handling and fighting guerrilla insurgencies and taking part in small scale conflicts, literally, called the Small Wars Manual; which is still used today. And let's not forget about the Marine Raider units of WW2, going on to Japanese held islands before any major invasion or offensive or without any other friendlies around for support, pulling off risky missions, what others would call suicide missions. I'm not knocking any other branches but give credit where credit is due.

They where probably not regular infantry if they where attached to a MEU they where more likely force recon so they where equivalent to tier 2 special purpose capable as marine at that time had no units with Socom so they where probably the best the USA marines had. No, the Marine Corps would be like building a second, smaller wall alongside the Great Wall, building it with inferior stones and construction techniques, and then saying "it's an elite wall". I'm not even saying they aren't officially considered "elite", I'm saying they aren't elite, period. If your argumentative technique is to say "you motherfucker, fuck off", I can basically determine from this you neither have a point nor particularly care to inform yourself. Enjoy your airsoft.

Dude, you're an airsofter, not a Marine. Marines are objectively not an elite branch because: 1) Inferior equipment to other branches whose roles they overlap with 2) Reliant on the Army/Air Force for schools (sniper school, airborne) 3) Receive no better training than their counterparts, the exception being their POGs (who go to SOI), who aren't intended to see combat anyways 4) Accept the lowest ASVAB scores of all branches 5) Cannot sustain deployments beyond 6 months, Army standard is 12-15.
