I passed my USCG rules of the road test in minutes because of this video. Excellent instructor. I attended a sea school in my area and the only thing I learned was that I was going to need help to pass the testing. Thank God for this guy and KZbin. *Captain Drew.

I went to a great Maritime school, but this video was still one of the best study tools I found online. I watched this one several times before I took the ROR exam. I passed with a 96 on the first try.

This guy is a great instructor. Low key approach, and he continually works to relate the rules to real life situations. Can't tell you how many times I've had someone stand at the lectern and just read out of the book. And he really knows/understands the rules.

This guy is the best!! He saved my bacon.... After eight days in a captain's class covering everything I didn't have a very good grasp of the rules. It was confusing to say the least and I've been on the water for over 35 years. I had purchased another DVD that was terrible. All it did was read the rules. Nothing to help you remember them. Anyway, with only three days left, I watched each of his videos twice and copied down his white board charts as he went along. The morning of the test, the first thing I did was write down the charts from memory. Only missed two questions in the rules and passed. Also passed the rest of the segments so working on the CPR, first aid, physical, and drug testing. Don't know who this guy is, but after watching you will see that he knows his stuff and he presents it in a way that is learnable. So I could care less what he wears and that the camera went out of focus a few times. He can polish it up later. And if he was closer than Chicagoland I would buy him several drinks!! So keep up the good work buddy! And if you're ever in SoCal let me know. I'm good for the drinks!

@@daylaanguerra9620 All vessels have the COLREGS onboard either physical or digital. Does this mean that the officer is not required to know the rules because he has the book with him? Do you sit with the book in your hands looking for the rules while giving orders to your helmsman to avoid other vessels?

Im attending what I have always been told was the best school for USCG training (probably heard this because I am local to the school, who knows) called Chapman School of Seamanship and I learned 10xs more from this guy than I did in class. The way you kept me engaged and applied rules to practical situations to explain made me understand and retain it. I found the channel when studying plotting at night and didn't even know there was a segment on rules of the road so after I learned i needed to retake my rules portion of the test I watched this series and now I am 100% confident in retaking. I got a 100% on my chart plotting first try due to his teaching and now I will pass the rules no problem. If anyone is struggling with understanding anything on the USGC training I would recommend this guy over anyone else. And I cant believe he put the info on youtube for free. I wish I could donate somehow because he saved me money having to redo any classes or retake fees. Thanks for helping.

@@uscaptainstraining knowing that you can take the course online now, I will be referring a buddy of mine looking to get his masters license to you for sure. Can you explain briefly how proctoring works when online? Does he just need to have the instructor on webcam during his exam? Also, do you offer a package for oupv, master up to 100 and towing endorsement all in one? I can lend him my block island chart and my plotting tools if that saves him money also. I saw on website there is a package but he didnlt know if it included towing endorsement as well.

This is a GREAT video [understatement]... the ROR test is notoriously the hardest (with a passing mark of 90%)... I watched this video over and over, supplemented by my course notes and, as a result, passed my ROR paper today at the first attempt with a score of 98% due in no small part to this excellent video... Neil, if you're ever on Long Island, look me up... I owe you a beer at the very least... extremely well laid out approach to the subject matter, brought to life wherever possible with real life examples that we can all visualize and imagine... nicely done!

Another good way (especially if you played Super Mario before) of reminding the types of vessel in the order of their priority, only that is upside down: Peach (power driven) Says (sailing) Fluffy (Fishing) Cats (Constrained) R (RAM) Nice (NUC) And don't forget to add seaplanes at the top, that's how I do it.

As far as how high the stern tow lights have to be when towing astern, I've never seen a tug's tow lights higher than a barge and cargo. I'm speaking mainly of RORO(ROLL ON/ROLL OFF) barges. Crowley has three decks for their larger RORO barges, and you're not able to see the stern tow lights, except when overtaking. I don't know of any part of the rules that dictate the height of stern tow lights. I also only know this from escort jobs when in or outbound with those tugs and tow. I could be wrong as far as the rules go.
