Personally I prefer Red Rumble and Blue Frenzy not just because the precedent G1 toys but also it feels natural to associate blue with high-frequency sonics, and red noise with low heavy rumbly frequencies.

The screen shot of Rumble, Ravage, and Laserbeak together makes me wonder if the TV series had intended to use the red Rumble, as that would have given the three primary cassettes a matching (allowing for Ravage to be off with dark and light grey) red/black/white color scheme. Choosing to use blue instead associates the humanoid cassette more with Soundwave than with the animal cassettes.

What's weirder is that the Legacy Rumble is explicitly marketed as "toy colors", because he uses the more muted shades of blue from the original toy... of Frenzy. Personally, I've gone back and forth. Long before I sat down to watch the show, I had books identifying Rumble as red, and that's how I thought of it for a while. But once I did watch the cartoon, I watched it enough to let the blue Rumble dominate my head. Then, more recently, it hit me: the cartoon didn't have Rumble and Frenzy. It had two Rumbles in two different colors, one of which was called Frenzy. They had the same powers, the same personality, they didn't even get that much screen time apart from each other. The only times in fiction where the difference mattered, Rumble was red. So that's my general rule today. Rumble is red, Frenzy is blue. But it's hard to kick the cartoon bias.

Frenzy uses high-frequency sonics, Rumble uses low-frequency vibrations. Blue light has a short wavelength and high frequency, red light has a long wavelength and low frequency. Blue is associated with sound, red is associated with earth. Blue Frenzy and Red Rumble just makes more sense.

When I first saw Frenzy, it was a book to coincide with the 2007 movie. There was a section that showed the original G1 forms of all the Transformers showing up in the movie, and they showed Blue Frenzy. So at least in my eyes, Frenzy is blue and Rumble is red.

For me it's never been a nostalgia thing, as my first fictions were Animated and '07. For me, it's more of a 'bouba v. kiki' phenomenon. Rumble sounds blue to me, and Frenzy just sounds red.

It just made more sense to me that Frenzy would be blue because Soundwave was blue and Frenzy had the audio related power.

Rumble's power is also audio-related. They have the same 'drum-like structures' in their chest they roll together to produce sound; in Frenzy's case, ultrasound which affects the minds of his enemies.(not unlike what Dirge does) and Rumble produces infrasound, which causes reverbations in the ground to cause tremors (which is kinda like Thundercracker's deal). I am guessing some translation error gave the boys their famous piledrivers. Rumble is described as having the attitude of a street punk, imho rather laconic, while Frenzy is a battle-hungry psycho. Red seems to suit him better.

The debate isn't whether Rumble is red or blue, the debate is "What is your Rumble, toy or cartoon?" In the G1 toyline, Rumble is black and red, Frenzy is dark blue and blue. In the G1 cartoon, Rumble is violet and blue with Frenzy being black and red. Personally, I roll with the toys since they came first and everything is based on them (and bio/tech specs also present their original personalities, which are drastically altered or ignored altogether by the cartoon). But that's me.

My second ever Transformer toy was the two pack of Ravage and Rumble, so in my head I think of Rumble as red. But Rumble also being blue is such a long standing error now I don't consider it an error. So sometimes he's blue. There's not a single answer, it just depends on the individual instance. I do feel like whether he's red or blue, Rumble is still the favourite for most people so it's funny that Frenzy was the Bayverse incarnation.

For me, the very first time I saw G1 based Transformers was a fan animation by Randall Ng and the moment Soundwave deploys both Rumble and Frenzy, the FIRST thing that clicked into my mind was... "Rumble is red, Frenzy is blue", never knew why but it stuck with me for a while. Of course, I do sometimes associate with Rumble being the "blue" one and Frenzy being the "red" one the moment I dive into the cartoon but because my first exposure to mainly the toys (never the shows), it'll always go back to "Rumble is red, Frenzy is blue". At last, this is all coming from my perspective so yours may differ and that's not a bad thing. At the end of the day, the answer to this old question is BOTH (Rumble is red AND blue, Frenzy is blue AND red).

I kind of think that it was done to drive the sales of the Frenzy/Laserbeak 2 pack. If a kid had Soundwave/Buzzsaw and Rumle/Ravage they would be less likely to buy F/L because it would be easier to ignore the color of Buzzsaw than the color of Rumble as the color of the birds was hard to see with the weapons attached. But switch the names of F and R and suddenly there is a reason to seek out the blue robot toy.

For me, Rumble is blue, Frenzy is red. If they were like G2 characters or Transmetals and had their names printed on themselves, that might be another matter. 😉 But, I still go by the cartoon and I am glad Rumble was featured more since I prefer that blue color scheme. And yes, that's not even their main colors. Rumble is violet (purplish-blue) and blue, and Frenzy is black and red. But yeah, it doesn't really matter that much at the end of the day. Heh.

Well, I had gotten the toys long before watching the cartoon or reading the comic. I got them and the other cassettes because their more or less 3 3/4" scale in robot mode meant they could play with my GI Joe action figures. So, yeah, going by the tech spec cards, Rumble was the red one. Though of course I was thrown by the cartoon when I saw it. Confused when they then did introduce Frenzy, and he was the red one. Though, frankly TJ, your explanation for why makes perfect sense. The really curious thing for me is that not only did Sunbow flip their colors and give them the same powers, they also merged their personalities. Rumble was supposed to be the thuggish street punk. Frenzy was supposed to be a violent sociopath. But when they made their powers the same, ignoring Frenzy's sonic attack, they also made the personalities and voices nearly identical as well. So, honestly, it doesn't matter which character is which, because they're interchangeable. I do love the idea that many have suggested, that they themselves swap their colors back and forth just to mess with everyone else. That DEFINITELY sounds like something they'd do and laugh about to each other!

I've always associated Rumble with red. What really puzzles me is why I think that? I got into Transformers from the G1 cartoon at my local video rental. I didn't buy any toys until Energon. What could I have seen in that time that would make me so unshakably convinced that Rumble was the red one?

For most of my life, I said FIBRIR because of the alliteration of Rumble = Red. I kinda flip-flopped as I heard different arguments, and eventually, after seeing the leaked listings, I decided that SS86 Rumble would make my final decision. And he was blue. So FIRRIB. The dolor change on the show is also necessitated by the fact that they had a mandate to NOT use Buzzsaw 'because he came with Soundwave, so need to sell him on the show'. The current team seems to favor the cartoon over toy history. In the movie, Rumble was blue - except when both he and Frenzy was red, which means both of them were also Frenzy. LOL - even the movie can't really help solve it, but there's nothing to solve - it's Rumble = Red, Frenzy = Blue.

My headcanon is that TransTech Rumble and Frenzy decided to prank the rest of the multiverse by going to random universes and telling their equivalents to swap color schemes. The IDW1 pair are in on the joke, hence why they keep switching over the course of the series.

There's another debate like this in Armada. Of the Star Saber Mini-Cons which one is Jetstorm and which is Runway? The toy packaging and the instructions even tell you 2 different things. Or With Perceptor, which one is Grindor and which one is Sureshock cause they swapped names in every episode, some times multiple times within the same episode. Or in Energon which one is Downshift and Which is Cliffjumper? Cause the toy line says the guy who looks like G1 Wheeljack Downshift but the cartoon says he's Cliffjumper. I tend to go with the cartoon so Rumble is purple and I'm color blind.

Cos Earthspark Frenzy is purple it would be neat if Rumble showed up and she was yellow. Yellow is purple's complementary colour AND yellow completes the primary colour trio that red and blue are in with it. Don't think we've ever had a yellow version of the Rumble/Frenzy mold either.

So from my logic side, Marvel made up the names and stories. The original Rumble figure was red. He was red in the comics. But the cartoon conditioned me over the years that rumble is blue. When I see a blue robot, I think Rumble before my brain says, “no. He’s Frenzy”. So between that and the PTSD from the movie, this line really screwed me up.

I mostly came into this fandom as a grown up, none of the transformers stuff I saw as a kid had a red or blue Rumble and Frenzy to give me a basis on who is who, so to be completely frank, I never know which one is which in any continuity. I know the toys came first, and the animated show changing the names around is most likely a big mistake, but since I have been aware of the fandom, we mostly take the animated shows as the main blueprint for transformers fiction, and we value accuracy to the cartoon. So that's why, even if it originally was a production gaff, I prefer to run with whatever was in the tv show for the sake of consistency. Isn't that what most people are supposed to remember anyway?

It really depends on what you prioritize. I prioritize the toys, so I say Rumble is red, and I like having Rumble and red start with the same letter.

I feel the name Frenzy would suit a blue robot more than an aggressive red and black robot, which should have an aggressive sounding name like Rumble. But, this is just my head canon.

I do have a G1 cartoon bias, but I agree, it doesn't matter. Personally, I do tend to think of Rumble as blue however. Not just because of G1, but because it makes sense to me. Red is a fiery color, it makes sense for someone named Frenzy to be red. Same with Rumble. Rumble has the pile drivers, and causes mini earthquakes. It makes sense for the guy causing earthquakes to be called Rumble. At least IMO.

I still like FIRRIB for the sole idea that 'Frenzy' sounds red and 'Rumble' sounds blue. It's like a baba and kiki thing.
