He was actually an Islamic scholar and an Islamic jurist, he came from a long line of Imams in his lineage and was also the imam of his local mosque in his time. In his own words he said: 'I am the servant of the Qur'an, for as long as i have a soul. I am the dust on the road of Muhammad, the Chosen One. If someone interprets my words in any other way, that person I deplore, and I deplore his words.' His poetry was translated and introduced by an amerian who discovered his work and wanted to introduce it to the west but did not interpret it using Rumi's actual meanings in some of his interpretations into the english language so he either missed out or wrongly but intentionally misinterpreted the Islamic parts since he was not sure how a Christian nation may recieve it.
