Personally, I feel sorry for both of them because they were both obviously trapped in a marriage where true love just didn't exist for one another with each other. At the same time, this scene makes me feel equally frustrated with both Rumple and Milah because he couldn't listen to her point about starting over somewhere new because he continued to resent her lack of forgiveness and scorn for crippling himself to be there for Bae, and she could never understand things from his point of view. They both

They both...?

This scene always makes me facepalm 'cause of Rumple. If he'd just listened to Milah and tried, just once, doing things her way and moving the family elsewhere, not only would Milah not have left him for Killian, but Bae wouldn't be in danger of getting drafted into the war years later! Milah's subsequent decisions make me facepalm too, but I can understand why she came to them - Rumple was being such a tool here! Oh and I have to wonder if the commenters from years ago also hate Rumple, since putting himself first before his own son is a thing he does A LOT. Yes, even his century long search for him was ultimately all about emotional gratification and closure for HIM, not about Bae's best interests.

But it's also true that he did literally anything for return to him. After all, the plan to bring magic to our world came to him later. If he had found a way to get there sooner, even if it meant losing his powers, he would have done it. And Milah shouldn't have made that promise to him anyway considering that she broke it after just one day. Some promises you either keep or don't say at all.

I feel like people easily forgot about this scene or something, seeing how many people hate Milah. Don't get me wrong, I think abandoning Bae was a terrible thing to do. But I wouldn't be so quick to judge her (especially seeing how many worse things people forgave other characters!). We can clearly see that she was willing to repair her marriage, she was willing to give him a chance she wanted this to work. But he had to be so damn stubborn about staying in the village as the outcasts... I don't know what I'd do if I was her. Especially knowing that before the ogre wars Rumple wanted to be brave and care for her. It's such a sad story, I feel bad for both of them (and Bae too of course, he suffered the most because of his parents' actions)

ok but does no one realize that leaving the village was super impractical, and close to impossible? they had no horses, meaning they would have to carry everything by themselves if they wanted to go to the next town. their source of income, rumple's spinning wheel would be an absolute bitch to carry, and then you factor in that rumple has a limp that makes it even harder for them to move. not to mention the fact that they would have to find new shelter once they get to the new village.

But it doesn't change that the problem was Milah's alone. Bae never complained about his father before he became the Dark One. Milah left, not only because she fell in love with Hook, but also because she worried about what others thought of her, and wanted to escape from her problems.
