Hey Cristine and Ben! Just so you’re aware a second cousin is when you chop your first cousin into two pieces, then they regrow like a starfish - the same applies to third cousin and so on and so forth. Hope this helps! ❤️ 🤗

The $300,000 vs $900,000 question, I think it does matter who owns it. $300,000 to a small business is worth much more than $900,000 is to a company like Amazon!

Simple breakdown of the cousin question: If Cristine and Jen both had kids, their kids would be first cousins. If Cristine’s fictitious kids had kids, those kids would be her grand babies and would be first cousins once removed in relation to Jen’s fictitious kids. If Jen’s fictitious kids had kids, then Cristine’s fictitious grandkids and Jen’s fictitious grandkids would be second cousins.

@@katyb2793 a lot of Asian countries are family oriented including Philippines. You don't even have to be related to call someone aunt, uncle (tita, tito) or older brother/older sister (ate, kuya). It's more of an acknowledgement/respect for elders. If it's your superior at work, you call them ma'am/sir or mr./ms.

As someone with 60+ cousins, I’ve had to figure out the cousin thing so here you guys go lol. It’s easiest to see in a family tree with clear rows and columns. 1st and 2nd cousins are in the same row as you are, and the number relates to how many columns away they are. I don’t think you even touched on the ‘removed’ thing, but that is just how many rows before or after you is the cousin. The visual helps me, idk about you guys, but hope it makes sense!

With the sentient robot thing I'd pick the robots because sentient doesn't equal having the nerve endings capable of feeling actual physical or emotional pain, it just means they'd realise they're getting run over and if they're sentient robots that don't feel any pain I can't say how much suffering they'd actually feel.

#15 5 old people vs 1 baby, the way I see it is: Yes, the total years of life are about the same at 100 (1 baby x 100 vs 5 olds x 20ish). The assumption is that the baby has mostly productive years ahead of him, while the old people are all in their retirement/twilight years. So, do you value 100 years of future productivity, or 100 years of reward for past productivity? I think this is questioning your values of motivation vs reward, and working for societal good vs enjoying/reaping rewards of a life already lived. Is our goal in life simply to work and produce, and are our non-productive years without worth? #16 Clone question is really about how your define "human" or "alive". If you believe being human requires some kind of god-given soul, or that only natural birth imbues you with natural life, then of course you value the "original" more than clones. But if you believe that humanity and life is based only on tangible and measurable traits (physical structure, electrical and chemical brain activity, human behavior, etc) then you would see no distinction between an original human and a clone, and they should be valued the same. $17 The 10% question is interrogating your risk assessment approach. What if the 10% option wasn't 10 people, but all living humans? And what if instead of 10%, it was 1%? The question wants you to think about options with very low probability, but much higher stakes, vs options with higher probability but lower stakes. If something is very unlikely to happen, but if it does happen it would be cataclysmic, is it worth devoting resources to tackling that, as opposed to dealing with problems that are much more common but less catastrophic?

Waitt but the math is the same? Kind of. At least if you do it this way: Choice 1: 5/10 pulls kills 2 people So if you pull 10 times, the most likely outcome is that 5×2=10 people die Choice 2: 1/10 pulls kill 10 people So if you pull 10 times, the most likely outcome is that 1×10=10 people die However, for one pull I'd choose the 10% one too, there's more possibilities for people not to die after all.

The problem of the trolley going round a round track infinitely, it depends did the people on the trolley consent to being on this trolley or were they forced there against their will? Personally I would pull the lever but with outside information people can't make a good decision on these. I know that's not the point of the trolley problem but that's what I don't like about them.

I have a large extended family that is really close. The 70 of us get together at least 2 times a year. In our case there isn't much difference between cousins and 2nd/once removed cousins, because your older cousins kids and the youngest cousins tend to be around the same age. So everyone is just a cousin. Either way I think this has the same problem as the best friend vs stranger dynamic.

I think Cristine was mixing up Saving Private Ryan with Flags of our Fathers, which Ryan Philippe is indeed in. His best recent work was in the Macgruber movie and TV series, if you want to see him try to be the serious action hero in the absolute silliest SNL sketch spinoff.

For me the problem 300k vs 900k trolley is: am I liable for the 300k trolley destroyed? Will my insuranace pay? Or will they claim I willfully destroyed the 300k trolley? The owner of the trolleys (city, private person, whoever) (most likely) has an insurance for their trolleys, that covers brake failures and similiar things, so the 900k trolley loss would be covered by insurance.
