Run Xperia XZ Premium in 4K all the time (stable no dialer crash) and performance test

I've noticed a lot of recent comments on this video, this video is over 3 years old, not sure why it is becoming popular now (KZbin's algorithm lol), anyway the phone has gone through multiple updates and I can't guarantee if this method works or not with the latest update, nor I can test it out since I no longer have the XZ Premium, however, it should work fine if you are running Android 7.1.1 with 1st July 2017 security patch. update for everyone , the latest update is making this phone even better. Now the phone is always 4K but when it comes to apps without 4K support, the resolution changes , now its adapting to different situations. I've been testing it by first opening the Aida64 and it shows 2160x3840. And then by playing a game then quickly get out of the game and checking the resolution in Aida64 and it's 1080p, then i emptied the recent apps and waited for a few minutes, then opened the Aida64 app again and it shows 2160x3840 with 801 dpi ,401x dpi/401y dpi. Now this is a super smartphone.Period.

I bought this phone recently, and the aida64 shows that the phone is running 4k out of the box (after updates). But when I type "wm size" to check the resolution in adb it shows that my phone is running 1080p. I am confused.

Change Resolution and DPI (back to default) - Type "adb shell" - Type "wm size 1080×1920" - Type "wm density 403"

Did you notice that the pixel density should be 807 ppi but it is still 403 ppi which means you still see the same thing!!! There is no change with what you see. Don't mix dpi with ppi. Could anyone find a way to fix that? I did the same thing with my Z5 Premium and my ppi changed from 401 to 806 and what I see dramatically changed (super detailed videos) but on my XZ Premium the ppi did not change and I see the same thing.

Thx for the assurance, I am grateful Sony took the initiative to manufacture & pioneer 4K displays on smartphones even from a couple of years back. Sure today we see LG G6 with it's 18:9 full vision but hasn't been another OEM with 4K panels to date, the next logical step for Sony is OLED. As other viewers mentioned Sony should let users take advantage of their handsets most desirable display resolution settings as they please, like in Samsung S8's. Sony already gives us their fantastic colour gamut options, cheers.

No problem! :D as long as my viewers like you enjoy my content it's fun to make videos like these. I am looking forward to the next phone which will be XZ1, I think it is about 2 months away from now, but that depends if it's too expensive then I might skip it instead will buy and review the XA1 Ultra which is a really superb phone even though the screen is 1080p it's super sharp. As for OLED, I hope Sony doesn't go with pentile OLED displays because their effective resolution is half of what the manufacturers state so I would argue that the Galaxy S8 is slightly above 1080p instead of QHD since Blue and Red subpixels are half the number of green ones.

All the games which do support 4K are by default set to run at 4K. And it runs them smoothly. Famous example GTA San Andreas by default runs at 4K.

This is awesome! I just tried it, wow it works! And no lag or freeze dialer! Lucky I found this. And yup, it is crispy clear! FYI I bought mine yesterday in luminous chrome, and immediately got the Oreo software update. Now I love my phone even more! Thanks for the tutorial!

Good video. I have been studying up on phones and laptops ~ prefer the lighter weight with drawing capability for the laptop/ultrabook/yoga style all to be used for business but even though I think I have narrowed it down to a few choices still not sure out of them which way to go. I tend to keep things for a spell and what ever I get be it phone or computer, needs to last me for many years. Had a cell phone for 6 years and computer /laptop for 11 years. Do not mind spending a little up front as long as I do not have to mess with this sort of shopping any more than have to - too much brain damage for me. Appreciate the time you take to make these. Hi, I was very eager to try this new 4K screen resolution setting when I heard it is fully functional & no ill affect on phone dialer. But I am concerned about the phone becoming overly hot in 4K mode, my other question is even the higher resolution settings is close to 4K, but when it comes time to actually viewing 4K HDR10 contents will it render it in this almost 4K setting than in it's actual full 4K resolution glory? I understand there could be benefits in viewing 4K on all of the time, who doesn't want a sharper display? But device over heating is an issue not be to ignored, please do a follow up video after running 4K on XZP for a more extended period of time & any positive or negative effects with day to day functionality, thx.

To be honest, things are turning out better than I expected, in this near 4K resolution the phone is working normally without any heating problems, you do loose a little battery backup but it's not much and right now I'm in my second day with normal use I've got 5 hours 40 minutes of SOT with battery level at 30% and I'm replying this comment on the phone connected with 4G Internet. I'm really very happy, the sharper text is definitely noticeable and I'm really liking the screen layout, now I can fit 6 icons in a row instead of 4. I might do a video tonight of the battery life. By the way, when you play 4K HDR content the resolution will change to actual 4K and HDR will work no problem.

Have you tried running 1440p (QHD)? That seems like a good compromise between 1080 and 2160

Yes, I did and phone works fine on qhd res, I think I'm settled on 1890p, my phone seems to be quite stable and battery life is also pretty good. However, 4K (2160p) causes problems like random lags and obviously the dreaded phone dialer crash :(

I use хз premium with screen resolution qhd, works great. The only problem is that the screenshots are cropped. Also, especially difficult games will be a little less smooth, but for me it's worth it

the first problem with 1890x3360 is that cardboard does not work (vr images are too small : kzbin.info/www/bejne/pajXfICqnZ6sZ6M) the second problem with 1890x3360 (and anything else than 2160x3840) is that the gpu renders the bitmap at this resolution as you asked him to do but when it needs to present to the 2160x3840 physical screen it will do a bitmap rescale, lowering frame rate, using more battery than just copying pixels if you ask it to render in 2160x3840 with the wm size command

My dear.. If you will continue running your xzp on the new resolution forget to play games for 1 reason which is most of the games made for 720p and 1080p so when you play those games on the new resolution it will push the prosser hard to UPSCALE all the frames and pics to 4k which will indeed make it Hot for this kind of process.. And some games wont work and crash.. Thats why SONY stuck with the 1080p due to the games and also for Google play.. But once google play will upgrade it self to 4k and the rest of the developers to make games and apps running on 4k then SONY will let thier new devices runs 4k all the time.. By the way.. I tried to run 4k all the time on my xperia xz and it work.. But it was sooo slow and crashes due to the 3g rams and prosser it has.. So i return it again on 1080p

Rashed Moon They still run perfectly fine, even the full 2160p... None of the XZp guys including myself are having any problems. This is a bit less resolution too. If it was a snapdragon 810, this would be a problem. It's not. The 835 has no problem handling 4k perfectly fine.

Games run perfectly fine with this 4K mod, except Asphalt 8 there were no crashes in any of the games I've tested, all ran smoothly.

All you have to do is google another version of google call and you'll be ok in 2160x3840

And yes i tried the full 4k resolution and it gave me diaer crash and when i redused the resolution to 3360@720 dpi it work fine no more crashes any mkre and there is a big difference between the 1080 and the 4k..but then i read a friend's quest was posted here saying that he tried the full 4k resolution with google keyboard diler and it didnt crash! Pls can you try it and post it so we can try it.. ☺️☺️☺️

Comic Art96 i see.. So not only me who faced the crashes.. So 3360@720 is the best choise for us now.. And regarding the games.. I did tried to play some games with the new resolution but i found my device runs hot and some didnt work properly.. And i checked some reviews and claim the same problem.. But any how.. Im not a phone gamer.. And i really wish if SONY WILL LISTEN TO THIER CUSTOMERS and make for us a New replacement for the Big grear phone ever z ultra..6.1 inch.. Small bezzels..even ifnthey will cancel the stereo speakers for space Full 4k native screen all the time.. Camera with f1.7 (im fed up with f 2.0) its time to change though.. with google dialer the phone app does not crash in 4k (go in settings/app/system app/phone but there are still some VR app that does not display the image correctly in 4k but some works like youtube, the only problem is that youtube app does not read 8k video, chrome app on www.youtube.com does allow it though

Surprisingly, it won't. I'm getting 7 hour screen on time and 2 days battery backup on average with normal use in this near 4K resolution. I'm quite happy with the result. 😃
