I hope that your customers appreciate you Jason! $3 Canadian is $2.25 US. Your mature perennials at $5 is US $3.76. Perennials are a minimum of $4 US here - more typically $5 for non mature. You are giving your customers great value - people all over the world watch your informative videos for unusually well presented and useful content. You are a true pro. Someday I hope to hop in the Sprinter and drive out to LA - it will be fun to veer northward to visit Vancouver and buy one of your plants for the trip home. Hehe Warmest regards Jennie

I've been wanting to do this with perennial herbs and flowers, and annual flowers. According to local city codes a resident is only allowed to have a sale of plants (flowers, herbs and/or vegetables) once a year. Rather puts a major damper on my plans. I did however make a solid contact with a farm marketer who will sell thru their booth. Since I grow from seed and all organic it's permissible.

Hi Sue. Sounds like a good arrangement for you. You can focus on the growing, and maybe host a single selling event yourself per year. I wonder, does your area have many spring plant sales hosted by garden clubs or other community groups? I've been really successful at events like those, and the direct customer feedback on my plants has been really useful.

Helpful info, thanks for sharing. How many times a year do you have the in-house plant sales? I know we have different criteria for the type of nursery certification (or business license or such) that you have to apply for depending on whether you have "customers" in house or not. I think it is required to provide toilets, and certain facilities when in-house, which might be an issue. I like the model of either being a wholesaler or just selling at markets/fairs. By the way I met Brad Jalbert and I saw that they are opening a new rose garden in the city near Fraser Valley, that's great! We were at the Heritage Rose conference in Elizabeth Park, CT.

Believe it or not, I haven't run into Brad Jalbert in person yet - even though we're only a half-hour apart and know many of the same people. Both busy doing our own thing, I guess - but his reputation precedes him, of course. Our area has pretty liberal/informal rules around "farm gate sales" - because we're on agricultural land and not within any city limits, no business license required. I wouldn't want to run my own sales all the time - too much work (and even risk). So we do this once per year. Timing was a bit late for this one. I'd prefer to go early June to line up with the first flush of repeat bloomers (but when some if the OGRs are still spectacular). Just too many other rose-related events conflicted. I ran this one as a sort of end-of-season clearance. Sales were good, but not as strong as I would expect in May or early June.

Hi Jason Ash here from Queensland Australia. I'm very interested to know how much you sell your roses for. Great channel. Keep up the good work

Hi Ashley. Good question, and I'll be transparent about this: I've been charging $30 Canadian for my roses in a 2 gallon pot this year. Some of my roses are own-root (and a bit smaller than the big bare-root imports from the US) and I also offer some of the bare root (potted). Here's my dilemma: most other growers this year boosted their rose prices to around $50, and more like $60 for the David Austin roses. That puts me well below the market average for my region, but I'm going to stick it out for now and look to change things up next year. I'll probably move to a 3 or 5 gallon pot for my bare root potting (which will make mine more similar to the competition) and given the larger pot size, I'll charge $40 or $45.I'll have to figure out a new pricing strategy as well for the own-root roses, because they still come out quite a bit smaller than the bare-root planted stock.

Hi Breanna - so happy to hear about your new venture. Lisa found a whole bunch of white plastic T-stakes (probably 12" or 14" long) at a local dollar store. You might see them in the footage. The pictures are applied to the stakes with masking tape. Nothing fancy, but it's served us pretty well (until we find something better!)

You're super helpful...thank you. I think you're in Canada, but do you know how in the US I get a licence to sell plants from my yard? I live in a small town so the restrictions on this kind of thing are loose, but the local ag office doesn't seem to know what to do with my question on this issue.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm5 жыл бұрын
Hi Olivia. Others may correct me, but at a small scale, it's usually just the local bylaws you need to be concerned about - a simple business license, if even that. Here, no provincial (state) or federal regulations are involved unless I try to export my plants. I might also check the state's invasive species list.
@oliviatrue29075 жыл бұрын
Perfect. Thanks for that. Yes, been meaning on looking for an invasive species list for my state. This was my first season selling plants, and I'm loving watching my next seasons babies grow under the mist!!
@elsagrace38933 жыл бұрын
Olivia True2 just do it. That way just in case some bureaucracy objects they will come to you and tell you exactly what to do to make it all legal. That way you do t waste your time asking around and getting no answers. I’d just be very considerate of neighbors with parking and noise and do as you need to get it going.
