I had a engine that went to runaway 3-4 times on me, the motive was a leaking injector that doubled the oil capacity from 4.5 L to 9 L. Knowing the fenomen I reacted on time and the only damage was a blown coolant hose. After I fixed that injector and hose the engine was fine but I wanted to do a rebuild because a 22 bar compresion on cil 1 vs 26 bar on the other ones. Nothing else was afected. The engine was 1.7 CDTi made by ISUZU

Seen many runaway diesels. They float the valves until they run out of oil and lock up. No big deal. Some had air cutoff flappers in them. Activate the "emergency stop" and replace the turbo, and they are good to go. Valve spring tension limits rpm. The higher the spring tension, the higher the rpm. All engines are built with this safety feature built into them..
