We forget how bad the german people had it during those times. And to be treated that way by the American media was awful . I wish this stigma can end . Its easy to see how right wing groups can still exploit this today Germany has been through a lot

our concepts of "nations" and "borders" enables so much stereotyping, and so much of drawing the line around a group, saying they are the real people, and pushing others out.... based on branding people like items in a store. so much of what we think is objective is really subjective. Objectively there is no such thing as an American or a German or so on - those are social constructs. Not saying whether they are real or not, or whether they are useful or not - I think a lot depends on context. What is most real, though, is that each person is a unique individual, a universe unto themselves. "Every man and woman is a star," Crowley. When I think of nations, my mind goes to borders, and then I think of prisoners and wars. Peace be with you.

Wow, not sure what spurred these bulls, lol, but I'll join in, with a humble attitude. I will start by saying, I can agree with the ideas and expressions you both put forth. I also think as an American, who doesn't want a physical wall, I'm torn. Not as an idealist or nationalist but as someone still trying to find true freedom from anyone trying to empose any belief, rather than free discussion and freedom in general. Walls though, have a purpose, Arminius could understand this, in a sense, right? Keeping the wolves from "his people" The problem is all of us "commoners" are being put at odds with each other by corrupt leaders and media. The German people on the whole, have always been human with their own issues, as the rest of the world, we are driven by our leaders division and in some cases our own beliefs. As an ex-Christian, I had a problem following those rules and giving up my freedom of thought that didn't "mesh" with other Christian beliefs. Even so, I had times of disregarding others and their ways because of predisposed teachings and bias. I've since gave those thoughts up for seeking a free life of my own, still not fully away, but working on it. Something I fear I may never truly realize without completely letting go of a modern life. Which even in America, isn't as easy as it is portrayed on TV shows, lol. We may never have a world without borders, or the wealthy/powerful imposing their beliefs and politics on others, no matter what side they fall. In this, we are left to do the best we can, and perhaps that is just standing up on a micro level at every chance we get. At worst, it seems like choosing the lesser of two weevils, lol, movie reference.

I have to thank you IMMENSELY for this incredible video! I am 51 now, but when I was 19, freshly out of Christianity, I went looking for spiritual and divination tools, and had the grand misfortune of purchasing a book by Edred Thorrson, who is actually Stephen Flowers! I could not have put this together without this video! All these years, I thought I was "bad at casting runes", and I realize now that it was because 1) I was getting flagrantly incorrect information and 2) it was based in Tarot, a medium I do not excel at (I am MUCH better with Oracle cards and/or a pendulum). I always got an extremely uneasy feeling every time I used Runes, and now it all makes so much sense! At 50, I purchased a new set of Runes, and I also bought The Icelandic Book of Futhark after watching your video book review on it. I've watched every single video you've made on the Runes and Runology, and look SO forward to getting into divination with them again. Now that I've learned so much from you and it all finally "clicks", I'm ready to try again. Now I think I'm going to go try to find your old blog posts. I'm too excited to wait!

I just had an accidental rune reading. I decided to get into runes this year basically to connect with my spiritual ancestry. My mother practiced Wiccan and my dad was Swedish....combine those two and here we are. I was just getting to know my runes for the first time today. I thought I'd put them all away but little Othala had hidden away and then dropped down into my left shoe when I got up. Othala represents ancestry and inheritance both physical and spiritual. I wanted to connect spiritually with my ancestors and my number one worry at the moment is how to hold on to the land and home I've inherited. On top of that, the left foot/shoe represents spiritual awakening, growth, and understanding. I feel like this was a greeting from an ancestor or possibly even the spirit of my mother ready to guide me on this new journey. I'm not as alone in this world as I thought I was. =)

In the year or so since adopting runes as a divination method (after decades of other sources), it seems struck me, for my use at any rate, they are meant to be cast as one might lots or bones rather than drawn and placed like cards. The means and ways of this are still nascent and developing. I look forward to exploring methodology with you all.

I’ve been studying and using the Tarot for many years and even though it has no historical basis in divination or Magick, it still works. I think belief is the tool in any system. Put enough of your own energy into it and it will produce results.

I have to disagree about Stephen Flowers when it comes to his Runes, the animism is there but it must be taken into account as a whole. Unfortunately there is the late 19th and early 20th centuries influence on his system too, especially from Guido von List. We have to take an account at this time did not have to the archaeological and anthropological information that we have now, so their ideas were formulated on what they knew and what they could find. Much of their Rune work it's still viable but it just has to be sifted through in order to find it's gold nuggets. Whether we like these people or not ( which we honestly all know they were racist) to not give credit for what work they did would injure the idea of the Runes and throw away the foundation that they gave. It takes about little intelligence to remove their racism from the system and dig into the animism that is rich inside of it but first one must get over themselves and our own bias towards others and their wrongs. The Northern Tradition, as I have come to call it, as Arith says has evolved and must evolve in order to keep current with the times. The ugly and the beautiful parts of the past tell us where our tradition has come from and informs us where it's going. But let's be honest no two practicing magicians are going to agree on much of anything once they have gained access to their own gnosis. So while animism is that the foundations of the Northern Tradition it is broad enough and deep enough to absorb everything and every viewpoint within its mantle. Starting in an animistic worldview does not mean that an entire system is supposed to stay in it or it does not mean it's supposed to abandon it either. Paradigms like animism and dualism are not in conflict but are simply modes of consciousness that the enterprising magician or Vitki learns to navigate in order to work their will upon the world. @ArithHärger3 жыл бұрын
Hello there! Indeed, Tacitus recorded about a method of divination used by Continental Germanic peoples - the casting of lots with symbols (marks) on them. It is not know what type of symbols these were and it's unlikely they were runes for two main reasons: (1) by the time Tacitus recorded this, the "Runes" (as Latin script) had not yet been introduced to Germanic peoples, therefore Germanic peoples had not yet developed Runes from the Latin Script; (2) In later sources Romans descriped the runes as "Greek Alphabet", so if those were runes Tacitus would have at least made a comparison with the Greek characters. It was in the 19th century that some scholars mentined that these symbols engraved on the lots were runes, because there was still a great confusion between Continental Germanic peoples and Scandinavians, and a confusions concerning historical periods such as Germanic Iron Age and Scandinavian Early Middle Ages/Viking Period. The first Germanic peoples to use the Runes were the Danes, who had had a long time-period of contact through trading with Southern Europe, mainly Romans, during the Iron Age, so the Danes picked up the Latin script and used it, creating the first Runes. Only during the Viking Period the Runes start to have distinctive forms to fit into Old Norse language and thus some of the symbols become quite different than the ones in the Latin script. Since it is unlikely that these were runes, some scholars have pointed out that these Germanic symbols Tacitus speaks about may have been the Ogham. However, the Ogham system did not exist yet by the time Tacitus describes those symbols/marks. The great problem here is that since the seventeenth century, there has been a linguistic, cultural and mythological confusion between Celts, Old Germans and Norse. One that still persists is that the oghamic writing of the populations of the British Isles would be a form of the runic alphabet. Although some studies point to the influence of runes and Greek writing on the initial formation of Ogham, most epigraphists consider Latin the main model, the result of the contact of British populations with Roman monuments. There are a few archaeological examples of runic inscriptions that coexist with Ogamic writing on the same monument, but were made at different times and by different authors, all after the 8th century CE. But there are also a few examples of runic and ogamic inscriptions, sculpted by the same person, as in the inscription of Killaloe, in Ireland, dating to the 11th century CE. The Runes are older than the Ogham. Ogham is in fact an Early Medieval alphabet, primary to write the archaic Irish language, which was in use more or less between the 4th to 6th centuries CE (mostly of onomastic records), since the contact with Latin; (also used between the 6th to 9th centuries, the so called "scholastic ogham" which after the period of Christianization it becomes eminently funerary-related). So the marks Tacitus speaks about were definitely neither the Ogham nor the Runes. These marks were probably just specific notches, single lines or lines of 2 and 3, maybe even crosses in form of "X". These marks were probably to give a "number" or to differentiate between lots.

A very interesting presentation Arith. You may know that my research is very similar, and although we do not always see eye to eye, I appreciate your diagnosis. The runic format such as that used in your thumbnail, is important, although misunderstood, so I will try and explain a different point of view. It is important to understand that Rune users were of one peoples. Norse, Celts, Pagans, that were seperated through time. We are all "children of The Aesir", or in modern terminology "Aryans". Historians have absolutely perverted the origin of this term, as they have perverted most of the culture. Which is where I come to Runes. Runic was very widespread. It certainly should not be associated with a singularly Norse product. The earliest runic carvings are in fact in Portugal. Specifically in Celtic Portugal. It is also closely associated with the "secret writings" of The Pheonicians. The subframe of the runic annotations displayed in your thumbnail has been passed down, altered and misinterpreted, as with most of the other cultural remnants that survive. So, let's try transferring runic "tongue" on to what we call today a musical staff. And yes, the use of the term "staff" as connected with a Druidic implement is no accident. The Druids imprinted their famous oak staffs with runes ! Now let's introduce a few questions that you may wish to contemplate : 1) Is music a language ? Can it instigate emotions, feelings, messages, concepts, far more effectively than words alone ? Do you have a favourite piece of music ? Why do you like that piece more than any other ? Does it "speak" to you ? 2) Are you aware that almost all prehistoric relics have a frequency element ? The type of Blue stones at Stonehenge were also used as the only material able to effectively process church bells ? Many of the remining megaliths across Celtic and Norse Europe retain there acoustic properties. If you strike them they emit a specific frequency. What is that all about ? 3) One of the few things that we know about our ancient heritage is that the priest class (Druids) were known for chanting, or singing recitations. This type of acoustic, or frequency element of worship has been passed down, transformed to our era. Gregorian chanting, church hymns, church bells, and the acoustic properties of our early places of Christian worship must have some religious significance, just as the propensity of building Christain places of worship on the same sites as those held sacred by pagans. There is little doubt that acoustics hold a very important, although broadly unrecognised, function in our theology. As a community, we sing to God. 4) Is it possible that runic is a language, but not in terms that we think of language. Just as music is a language, but not in terms of what we refer to as language. Runic is a language, but what we might refer to as an emotional language. Music invokes emotions. Music can invoke powerful emotions, even to accompany soldiers into battle ! It can also invoke great excitement, anger, peace, tranquility, joy, celebration, sadness. It enhances spoken tongue across the spectrum of languages. The messages of song are far more emotionally powerful than the written poem. 5) I do not believe that runes were a form of communication between people at all. It is a form of communication between people and dieties. A type of communication of acoustics, or more precisely frequency. Therefore I propose that runes are a written form of notes. They cannot be spoken, but they can be sung, or chanted. The words used are irrationally irrelevant. If the arrangement of the notes is not correct, it doesn't "sound right". I would like to provide an example, if Arith allows. You (probably) will not understand what is being sung, but that is not the point, and does not effect how you feel emotionally about the composition. Can you imagine the communities coming together to sing around our ancient henges and monuments ? Listen to the wizards apprentice sing. I wonder whether the angels will sing back to them ? kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGXHeYiQrK1rjJY&ab_channel=treblechoir99 6) Finally, I would like to propose to bring it altogether, to understand what runes and its implications are all about by viewing 2 more videos. One of modern and the other of very ancient origins. I rest my case. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYvNaJqLfrRgaM0&ab_channel=VincentV.C. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpionoaYZch-eMk&ab_channel=UNESCO

I enjoy the content that you put out from all the way here in Sydney X Was I wrong in thinking that you mentioned in a previous video that runes weren’t meant to be used as divination tools Historically? I’ve listen to so many videos that I might have gotten a bit muddled up Warmly, Shell

Hello, can someone help me with this question? I am new to the runes and divination. How does divination work? When you think about your question and then draw runes, your thinking or intention can influence what runes are drawn (this has been scientifically proven). If you draw your runes then think of your question, you can still formulate meaning from the runes you draw given any question based on your circumstance. What, then, is divination? Is it the energy/influence of your intention over the outcome OR your ability to draw insight/meaning in a way that has not occurred to you previously? Or is it some unknown energy that the symbols draw in to assist you? Thank you so very much for your insight.

Do you have a book on your interpretation of the runes ?

I'm surprised you didn't get into Tacitus' writings about the early Germanic tribes casting lots via carved fruit tree branches. Also the ancient Roman pagans use of sortes

I did, on others videos, some of which suggested in this very video. Didn't think I should repeat myself all over again concerning that on this video.

Yeah that's kinda what I disagreed with people on and though was "new age" the use of runes for divination. Just doesn't feel right. Legends say we're supposed to use them on weapons. over the doorway, painted or carved on tree bark.

Wonderful video as always, thank you! There is a book by Joe Hill I think which has also been made into a TV series called NOS4A2 in which a character uses scrabble game tiles for divination. Lol anyone could if they wanted, couldn't they? Runes, Scrabble tiles, bones, tea leaves, etc. Do what works for you is my motto & isn't it fun to have so much flexibility?

Well noted and well said. I confess I once gave a mini-lecture to a local pagan group on divination where I had three members run out and gather 3 random pieces of ground detritus each and proceeded to do an on the spot divination with small rocks, twigs and assorted bits of garbage. It is tough to look sagely when saying, “Hmmmmn I see that pencil here crosses bottlecap and post-it scrap”, but it worked. In short, keep rocking your fun & flexibility!

My introduction to the runes dates to the late 80s when I got hold of a copy of the book by Ralph Blum. I learned today that lobotomy was invented by a Potuguese doctor, how shameful, still I would rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy. Thinking of it when I see Mr T maybe he had a lobotomy on one of his visits to Portugal?

Where exactly did the modern divination system of runes originate.

Des artefacts très anciens confirment l'utilisation des runes en guérison donc il n'est pas exclu du tout qu'elles n'aient pas été utilisées en divination. L'un et l'autre étant intrinsèquement liés.

By the way, you dont have to do this if it's extra work, but it'd be really helpful to include links in the description to your other videos that you reference. I had a bit of trouble figuring out which of your vids was about shapeshifters. I'll have to look again
