About the "wondering if you are weaker" I noticed this as well. Apparently weapons have like an element with it and the enemies are weak to those elements. So you HAVE to switch weapons constantly depending on what enemy you are fighting. So yeah. I guess you can say you are weaker based off of what mob you fight

Everyone is complementing Gower and Co for the quick updates in response to feedback, but I want to complement you on editing and voicing those updates in the video. You didn't slap text blobs everywhere or cram all the changes in the end. You took the time to go back through a script you already wrote, voiced, and edited to keep the information as relevant as possible and it is fantastic work. 10/10 thank you.

@@Tolseren The game drew all sorts of audiences from runescape. Some enjoy the extremely relaxed skilling (even the combat just feels like skilling) but a lot of people found nothing of value in the game. The QoL changes are far and away very good to see, but if the core game itself has no appeal for people (such as myself) there is almost no chance I'll ever give it another shot. It would need an extreme design decision change personally.

33:10 So the really funny part here, is that a decade or so ago, a game called "Cube World" was a small indie game with a ton of hype that has since fallen off the face of the earth, because they had a similar system. You'd level up in one big area of the map, you'd get all your gear and the interesting nodes w/e Then when you went to the next area, ALL of your gear was basically item level 0 and you had to get all new stuff. Everyone, literally everyone, hated it. It's a bad idea, I don't know how Gower didn't hear about this and realize that, while some professions being region locked is fine, combat has no excuse to be reset between episodes.

You use every skill contiuously throughout the game even in different regions in one way or another. There is only the illusion that you are doing something different in another mmo. It's more abrupt in this game so you "feel" like something different is happening. Go to a higher level zone in most other mmos and you gear has the same effect on higher level mobs and will be replaced in hours. This has been debunked almost daily since release.

I know they said this, but it just seems wrong. On day 1 of Runescape, you needed 88 smithing to make full adamant armor: no shops sold full addy until dragon slayer was released. When rune gear came out, you needed !!99!! smithing to smith the coveted rune 2h, the bis weapon until members was released, unobtainable by other means. All of the weapons and armor was ludicrously grindy to get in the beginning of the game. Day 1 there was no banking. When law runes were eventually added, they were an uncommon drop from at the time relatively high level mobs. No running. The only furnace was in lumbridge, and the only anvil was in varrock. Your mines were edgeville dungeon, the chasm (which could only be entered from the north, no al karid gate), varock east mine, and varrock west mine. And of course smithing was ludicrously click intensive.

@@FailuresWithJade It made sense to give players a mythical bis weapon few would ever have and putting it so high up the skill made sense for those player goals but after new gear powercrept rune gear the smithing skill became useless. They should have done away with the cap, flattened the exponential exp requirements and let players smith better gear by going beyond level 99 to keep that long term goal existing.

I think J1mmy makes a good point at about 26:00. Gamers commonly critisize AAA development companies these days for sticking so much to "tried and true" elements that those titles are boring and repetitive. We don't necessarily need to like Brighter Shores as a game or core mechanics within it, it would probably do us good as a community to recognize developers that are actively trying new things. We should try to recognize the risk in some way. I don't think that needs to look like purchasing games we don't like or anything like that; I honestly don't know what the best way to do that is. Maybe it's giving honest critiques and pointing out elements that are new and that--to a certain degree--that is refreshing.

I think my main issue with Brighter Shores is that it just seems like a soulless grindfest. Sure, runescape is a grindfest but it has a world built around it that is interesting and fun, there's a level of excitement that comes with unlocking a new thing and getting to go do it. This just feels like a very stripped down runescape. You don't need scenery, you don't need a meaningful world, here just go to your skilling corner and skill, you don't even have to think because all of the skilling activities level up with you.

I get people don't like it for the combat in particular, but I think it's still a necessary part of the overall goal of the profession system, which is to keep all content relevant and to curb powercreep for the entire future of the game. I think people will be less turned off by it once they actually flesh out the combat system to be more interesting and satisfying, and once we at least have armor crafting to round out our ability to meta scale the combat professions. It's not actually even a full reset as-is and going forward because the gear crafting professions exist to meta scale your ability to easily gear yourself, potionmaking exists to meta scale your xp gain, healing and damage output, moneymaking professions exist to let you build up a bank to invest into future skills, and any number of future professions could deliver new ways to add to these scaling aspects.

Bit of an out of the blue comparison, but the region-locked combat level reminds me a lot of full-release Cube World and the biggest issue I and most people had with that game that really disappointed us: Being that all gear and traversal upgrades were region-locked. Go over that hill over there? oops, your para-glider no longer exists and you now hit like a wet noodle. Come back over the hill? everything is back and you aren't just sneezing in the enemies' general direction as your main attack. This system genuinely feels terrible to interact with and made me quit the game shortly after leaving my first region. I'm not saying developers should never de-power their players, there's often many narrative and gameplay reasons to do so that create a uniquely memorable experience, but it is a very narrow tightrope to walk. From my perspective, the more frequently you do it, and the longer it lasts, the sourer it tastes for players. I've not played Brighter Shores and probably won't, but just as an outsider looking, Andrew Gower is very far off that tightrope.

Jokes aside, I feel like most scores worth paying attention to are non-linear. Improving a 9/10 game into a 10/10 game is exponentially harder than going from 8 to 9, which is exponentially harder than going from 7 to 8, and so on. Honestly it's probably why so many games land between 60-80% on most game review websites despite being so vastly different in terms of quality; it's hard to go below 50 or above 85. Having even just one significant redeeming quality already puts a game at a 3/10, and one noticeable flaw is often enough to disqualify a game from the 9-10 range.

@@thedarter I like your thinking - it's adjacent to the pareto principle (aka 80/20 rule) at the top end, but the reason most games get between 60-80% is because the scale for most reviewers who want to still get invited to review games only really runs from 50-95%.

@@rossstewart9475 I'd argue that the ratings they'd give if they were unbiased would rarely differ all that wildly from their actual scores. Say what you will about the integrity of game journalism, I can at least believe that the reviewer's experience of a AAA game would sit between 50 and 90. When you have to play game after game, day in and day out, quickly, as your job, I could imagine that your perception gets warped, and you unintentionally give bonus points to a game for simply not being painful to review within the time you're given, and unintentionally dock points from creative indie games for expecting more out of you than you can afford to give without turning in your review late. Professional game reviewing was flawed from the start. Objectifying art with scales and checklists inherently misses the point, and I don't even think it's the fault of the reviewers.

It's interesting the response about the levelling system as well. "In our testing", "our testing finds", etc. Sounds like a game trying to be designed by focus group, which is going to have obvious blind spots for things like "long term achievement" and "retention". People seem to be excusing it because of the Gower name, but forget that Gower was more involved in EoC than modern OSRS.

The combat reset thing would only work in the event of expansions IMO. It’s a feature I had envisioned for, “how do we make a WoW expansion that doesn’t completely invalidate everything that came before it” But, for that to work, you need a base game. You need a level 1-60 grind with dungeons to do and raids at level 60 to conquer. Could you imagine you finish leveling Elwynn Forest and you move over to Westfall and you’re suddenly level 1 again? But say you’re looking at WoW and you’re moving to Outland in first expansion. There’s a good reason baked in right there. “It turns out the magical enchantments we’ve been using on our gear on Azeroth doesn’t work correctly here in this new place. We’ll need to find new gear that works here but not back on Azeroth.”

I always coming back to this thought when someone says "i would jump back to play actual 2007scape or 2012scape": Why? OSRS is just the better version of 2007 in every single way. In 2012 there were a total of 2 bosses in the game that you could actually call bosses since they have actual mechanics: QBD and Nex. OSRS and RS3 didnt come to the same conclusion by mistake that bossing should be emphasized with good mechanics / loot unlike what we had in the Mole, KQ, KBD, etc, which gave a lot of people something to look forward, especially since its the only MMO which balances most bosses with solo in mind. You could say from all of these things that Andrew doesnt seem to look far ahead in the future at all, which is why rooftop agility or mahogany homes allows you to stick around areas for longer than a duration of a quest or two

Brighter Shores is a really interesting case study, because it is almost like in the early design meetings they made the main tennant of design to be "Disconnected". The areas on the smallest scale are disconnected from one another, loading and unloading from room to room, the acts disconnect the skills from one another, the players are disconnected from one another by the lack of any real multiplayer mechanics. I don't THINK that's how those meetings went, but it is weird that it turned out that way thanks to the strange "not an MMO but ended up as MMO late" development timeline. I'm interested in where the game ends up, because right now I'm not really sure the vision is coming through very clearly. I appreciate the hard work being put in, and hopefully allowing a bunch of players in this early will expediate the iteration stage of development.

What I hate about the concept behind the professions is that it limits discovery per-skill. I start a new Runescape character, or get bored on an old one, and I think "Hmm... I'm going to become a cook!" and then I go all over the map, pursuing cooking tasks, grinding EXP with different local methods, ect. Cooking isn't just 'some content I did'--it's an asset I carry throughout regular adventuring, can discover more about as I explore, and can work on at my own discretion. The problem I have with locking skills to certain areas, is that if I wanna be "a cook", I will theoretically never leave that area. I will be a Hope Port smuck until I decide to grind another skill. I will never be exploring the map, discover a new method for cooking skilling, and go "Oh! I should come back here later to continue my cooking grind!" It also leads to just... *baffling* design decisions--like having unique combat skills per-area. What is the fun in that? Why am I grinding a combat stat, the thing I use to adventure, only to drop it for the next zone and be forced to use an identical combat stat.

I actually think the new professions come with a higher potential than OS's or RS's skilling system. My only issue with them is how there's little to no cohesiveness between them. They should tie in with one another in unique and unexpected ways to reward the player in other professions. Maybe you hit 50 fishing and can now fish up new potion reagents. Maybe you hit 40 potion making and can make a pot that lets you gather 25% faster. Keeping them mostly separate, or even linear makes them incredibly stale. I played for 3 hours and found myself picking OSRS back up after 6 months of not playing.

To add to your point about the quests, it's definitely odd to not let players explore the quests without unreasonable restrictions. In runescape, to my knowledge there are very few if any skill requirements for the F2P quests (as well as some members quests!) While it may have been just been a product of the early development, it has evolved as a great way to introduce players to the world and truly show how open the game can be and improve the early exploration without feeling the tedium of getting to a barrier and then having to change gears completely just to get a drip feed of story. And 100% agree about needing to let your players know about quest requirements so we can know what to work towards without hitting that obnoxious barrier.

I think your review is very fair; the game is missing some crucial elements. But, it is in early access, and being updated extremely frequently. So if you see it as less of a complete MMORPG and more the foundations of one, where your progress now won't be reset later, to me that's where the 'Achiever' score ranks up and makes the grinds more rewarding - we don't know what achievements will be desirable in the future, but we can be almost certain that -something- will be added. There's also something cool about being in the game early on and watching it develop and grow, even if it's got some flaws.

By the way Jimmy just to address your complaint about the immunity, they tell you about that right away in episode two. The answer is fear portions, that apply the immunity effect continuously. Unfortunately there's no trading ATM so the opportunity cost to gather and brew those potions, outside of completing the entry, is not worth it during the first two areas. Speaking of which, did you notice how you can lower enemies to previous tiers? So you don't always have to fight a goblin twice your level, you can tick it back... But that's annoying to do every time. Still, if you've unlocked a high gathering or foraging and need the lower tier item to train potions, etc, that's a good option.

I don't think the filter is AI. It simply wouldn't make sense to spend the compute necessary to have an AI checking every single message that's sent when they can simply have a list of banned words and block any message that contains those words.

The list itself is likely ai generated

@@Pharoah2 Even this I highly doubt. Maybe if they have a local setup, but something like chatgpt, claude, gemini, etc., would almost certainly have their own filters in place that would hinder the AI from actually making an accurate list. I also doubt something like "18" would make it onto an AI generated filtered word list. That seems exactly like the kind of stupid thing a human would add. It just makes a lot more sense to grab a pre-made list from somewhere, especially since then you can at least have a reasonable level of certainty that it's a relatively exhaustive list and the AI didn't add anything weird or leave anything important out.

A pretty obvious solution (to me) for the combat issue is to have an over-all level that applies everywhere but have sub-skills that make you better at fighting specific enemy types or just in each zone, so you'd have "Combat" and then you'd have like "Forest fighting" "Tunnel fighting" whatever else. And instead of having gear just suddenly become useless which is definitely a dumb mechanic, have them have bonus stats that make them better for different zones and give them styles suitable for each zone.

I decided to try out that test just after you showed it in the video; this is what I got. You are 87% Explorer, 60% Achiever, 40% Socialiser, 13% Killer. Sounds pretty close to how I viewed myself, now back to the video!

Brighter Shores is special, it's introducing an entirely new way of designing a game that I've never seen before, largely through the episodic releases. I think it's an awesome concept: Release a new episode (expansion) that's available to EVERYONE, you start from square one as does everyone else at the beginning of a new episode, that's awesome, and I know episodic releases isn't unique, it's the fact it's an MMO doing that. It offers that "starting over" feeling of the rapid levelling and variety without actually restarting, no other MMO has ever attempted that. And it also attempts to fix the issue that all new content is directed at endgame players, thus people with lives (no offense) will never get to experience the new content, Brighter Shores fixes that. I'm really excited to see how this game continues to develop! Andrew has been super active at making changes based on feedback, very rapid development and very in touch with his community, I have a lot of confidence in him to make something weirdoes like us would truly enjoy

Everything you're saying sounds exactly like RuneScape, mindless grinding, do a small short quest and encounter a skill requirement. back to grinding. What's the difference?

RuneScape's skills often allowed you much more freedom when it comes to using one skills to affect other forms of content in ways which Brighter Shores currently doesn't. RuneScape also offers a lot of variety in what you can cut, fish, fight unlike Brighter Shores which insists you grind the same three things on repeat albeit with toggleable difficulties. Fishing in Brighter Shores: Flounder, Pufferfish, Eel, stronger Flounder, stronger Pufferfish, stronger Eel repeat continuously in the same three main bodies of water (Edit: till around level 22 when it finally starts to change the formula). If you want to stop the endless clickathon you do get to do some AFK Herring (I believe) but the exp is shit so not worth it. Fishing in RuneScape: Shrimp, Anchovies, Cod, Salmon, Tuna, Lobsters, Swordfish, Shark and loads more. All scattered around multiple bodies of water all across the map. All are semi-AFK allowing you to be able to somewhat enjoy conversations with other players as you fish.

@colliefields4637 That's actually explained way clearer thank you, I can understand why brighter shores fishing sounds more dull now haha. If there's wasn't much fish variety or location variety in RuneScape, I probably wouldn't enjoy fishing

i really wish the game wasn't built around chunks. it really does feel claustrophobic and I like to see the world around me. I'll probably revisit the game in a year and see what changed. Right now, I don't want to put the time in to enjoy something I clearly don't currently.

I dont think the game wasnt ready. i think the game was trying to replicate a game, without understanding what made the game successful. I think the game is exactly what it was set out to be. The dev thought that by making a game more grindy than osrs, it would make it better. But didnt understand that people want max on osrs because the game is good, not because it's grindy., he didnt understand to make a good game grindable instead of a bad game grindable

This is one of the best Game reviews ive ever seen. The way this man is able to see what really matter and also finding great alliteration to Reletable / known games and systems is remarkable. This feels like the Era before Big money came.
