I remember a high-level one shot where my dwarf got so drunk just before a fight against vampires that he passed out halfway through the third round. Then the vampires gagged when they tried drinking his blood because his B.A.C. was so high they couldn't stomach it

Had a dwarf cleric who along with his party got ambushed by drow with sleeping poison laced arrows. Out numbered 4 to 1 we took out like 4 of them but by the 3rd round all 5 of my party members where down but me. I lasted another 12 rounds on poison saves alone as I ran and took down 4 more drow. I was more likely to be downed from the minimal damage the arrows where doing then the poison itself until I was given disadvantage and lost my first first round (had to loose two rounds to immediately fail or fall 3 turns after the first fail). On rounds 8 was my first fail 3 rounds later i rolled 2 nat 20's from more arrows so he said I lasted one more round then I should have. When the rest of the party woke up stripped of their gear in cells, I was told the drow where so scared of me I was In a cell by myself with shackles that held me in a kneeling position head faced down. I woke up 4 hours before the rest of the party and we had broken out within an hour of the last member waking up due some irl knowledge the DM didn't know I had and whatever deity blessed the rangers dice as well as mine that day.

This is mostly due to the difference in origin, Drow were corrupted to evil by the Elven God Lolth, and driven underground by the other elves due to being evil arsehole slavers, meanwhile Duergar (And their lesser known cousins the Derro) were originally just ordinary dwarves, that were tricked by Illithids to tunnel into their lair, where they were captured, experimented on and turned into slaves before they finally revolted and freed themselves, they're meaner due to the Illithids removing their emotions whereas Drow are entirely different due to the influence of the Dark Seldarine, mainly Lolth. Although there are notable differences in culture between "surface" dwarves and Duergar, namely that Duergar don't care about honour anywhere near as much and have long traditions of magic, their religion is also different.

In the defense of dwarves, the 100 foot ceilings isn't a waste of resources. Because they carved that out of the stone it was built into. So they actually produced a bunch of extra resources by carving out extra stone for extra tall rooms. Also, can you imagine how stuffy those celebration halls would be, filled with like five generations of dwarves all drinking and arguing over whose brother made the better chair? All of them simply have a note that says "Drow don't exist", "Duergar don't exist", etc., except for svirfneblin who get the note "Svirfneblin don't exist for the three people who care."

Fun fact about dwarves: humans drink to forget, dwarves drink to remember. A dwarf 5 beers in can vividly recall their most joyful memory, such as their wedding day, a victory over a hard battle, or the birth of a child. This can also happen to bad memories as well if they are having a bad day, so avoid a gloomy dwarf that is 5 pints in

Gotta admit I always assumed their halls were so big because they wanted to put all the stone that was in that space somewhere else. Like, there's a big chasm nextdoor where they can see stuff they want on the other side, so they build a stupid-huge bridge to cross it without feeling like they're suspended over a fathomless darkness. Once they've got all the material they'll need, it'll still take years to finish the bridge, so since they'll still have to walk through the dig site to get to the bridge everyday, they prettied it up a bit over time.

There is almost never a reason why the Dwarves hate the Elves in-universe. I mean, other than "Because the book which formed the cornerstone of western fantasy had an elf and a Dwarf that kind of didn't get along in it". Which always irks me because, throughout most of Middle-Earth history, the Elves and Dwarves got along pretty fucking well. Or, at least, no worse than the Dwarves did with anyone else being the recluses that they were.

They carve tattoos into their flesh whenever they achieve some great achievement, the ones living to their oldest age and having the most accomplishments eventually being covered with their own autobiography.

So dwarves are competent, hardy, skilled craftsmen, who produce things of actual worth. Then as is they naturally expect to keep the results of their labour and trade it as they so choose. You think there expectation that their private property is their own, weird? If anything I think that dwarves are the most reasonable of the dnd “races”. Grumpy old men, ahh yes. How about I worked for this and you don’t get to take it from me without a fight, this isn’t a fantasy communist utopia, you work for what you get and you fight to keep it. @@powerist209 true enough, but that’s still the communal family fallacy. The clan or smaller tribe system in our own world has been very in-group, out-group they still own what they make, their skilled labour belongs to their people and their families not to the orcs that show up and try to steal. My argument is against his comparison to old greedy men. They work hard and create beauty. To me this is an issue of ideals, it is better to have the expectation of sovereignty and free association than not. The dwarves make for their own, and to trade their wares willingly. Having the above expectation is a higher principle. That whole, you’re rich so therefore are you really surprised that people come to steal from you, is in my opinion a ridiculous mindset.
