A video recap of the first day my Monte Carlo went in the 11s in a drag race with 2.56 gears and factory torque converter. Left the house just before 6AM, and after a brief pitstop to clear my windows at a gas station, I picked up my Dad, and Uncle, before driving 192 miles out to US131 Motorsports Park in Martin, MI.
We were blessed with cold fall air with high pressure, track preparations were on point, and the car performed well.
Pass #1 - Overly eager to get on the track (forgot to set up my Draggy), and overly cautious on the launch (wasted the best air of all three passes)
Pass #2 - Pushed a little harder on the launch, stuck perfectly. Air was going away.
Pass #3 - Flat-footed the launch, car absolutely stuck it.
After making three passes in the 11s, and knowing the last pass was flat out, decided to call it a day, get lunch, and start our 192 mile drive back home.
Project run 11s with 2.56 gears, stock torque converter, and 225/70/15 Cooper Cobras was a success.
The goal is to reach 11.50s in 2022 - stay tuned!

A big, heavy personal luxury car with 2.56 gears, running in the 11s simply due to the solid combo of the BBC and TH400 slamming oceans of torque to the tires. Decades ago I had a 1971 Monte with the 270 HP 350-4bbl, TH350 and 2.73 rear. It was no drag racer, but the passing time from 50 mph to 80 mph was the fastest I had ever experienced. Something about that combo in the drive train made highway passing very satisfying. And the "hood shimmy" at those speeds is something you never forget.
@dragginwagon406
@dragginwagon406 3 жыл бұрын
Very close, but it’s a TH350 (one that was rebuilt in the late ‘90’s). This was a factory 265 hp 350. I know what you mean about the “passing gear” with highway gears; even without downshifting, the 75-120 mph in this car is off the hook. Highway gears are a joy on the street.
@ericmark472
@ericmark472 3 жыл бұрын
I had the same setup in a 72 Monte, 350/4bbl TH350 and stock 2.73's but had a decent Crane cam in it. Surprised a few people with it. With those gears it's like running a powerglide, you only need the first two. Passing people was a blast.
@dragginwagon406

@@ericmark472, I have a 2.73-geared 12-bolt as well. I've thought about giving it a shot, I'm just not sure I have the valvetrain stability to run it out the back door in second gear. Right now, I'm probably rolling through at 5800 rpm, with 2.73s it'd be up around 6200 rpm. Now, if I switch from 27" to 28" tires, rpm drops back down to 6000 with the 2.73s.
@ericmark472
@ericmark472 3 жыл бұрын
@@dragginwagon406 - If I remember correctly the cam was good to a little over 6000 so I did have to put some good valve springs in it. Otherwise the internals were stock. Only other mods were an intake and either a mongrel Holley or a massaged QJet. And a B & M Kit in the trans. It wasn't fast by today's standards but it was fun at the time. Running a serious big block like yours would be much more interesting. I'm impressed that the TH350 holds up with that kind of torque. Nice ride. :)

Best I ran was 14.7 @ 95 mph at Commerce drag strip in Georgia. The low compression and crappy heads make pretty low hp, but decent torque. I did some motor work and swapped to a T400. Used to street race it in Philly every once and a while. It was never quick but after the "One Wheel of Wonder" lengthy burnouts, it would top end most of the cars I raced on the highways. Got pulled over driving back from NYC to PA. troopers said they were chasing me for miles before they caught up.. and got off with a warning...Sold it before I ever could gear her with a trunk full of parts.. I really like the fact you kept it bone-stock looking (with the factory '70 only color-keyed wheelcovers) to camouflage that tire-shredding 11-second monster under the hood - which is incredible considering the cars' weight, stock converter and open 2.56 rear. BTW your MC reminds me of my parents '70 Chevelle that they bought brand new off the lot in that exact same Green Mist color and dark green interior (which was actually the highest produced color combo for all 1970 Chevrolets, but that color really stands out today when everything is either black, silver or white).

So many posters don't seem to get or like your setup. Sure adding a 4k buck 4L whatever OD trans and gears would make a difference, but a th350/th400 is dirt cheap to build, and you have done a lot with an "unusual combination". I personally enjoyed this video and like what you have done. And to the people saying 11's aren't that fast blah blah, sure you can buy a $1500 used crotch rocket and probably go faster, but that isn't the point..it is what can be done with this combination.

Thanks man! As another commenter said, "when ya' know, ya' know." I know, you know. With my Monte Carlo, it's as much about "what it isn't," as much as it is about "what it is." My Monte Carlo isn't a race car; it doesn't have light weight wheels or sticky tires, deep gears, fancy posi unit, aftermarket axles, high stall, transmission cooler, tachometer, fuel pressure gauge, aftermarket distributor with fancy spark box, double pumper carb, single plane intake or loud "no restriction" mufflers. My Monte Carlo does have a smartly built engine; good pistons, cast iron stroker crank and I-beam rods, oil pan mods from VortecPro, factory iron oval port heads self-ported according to VortecPro videos on KZbin, and machine work from a competent machinist. It also has a dual plane intake, a 25 year old Holley 3310, swap meet distributor, original converter, a rebuilt transmission (after the original stopped shifting from 1st to 2nd), original driveshaft and U-joints, and a Spartan Locker in place of the sider gears. If or when the transmission fails, TH350s are still relatively inexpensive to rebuild.

When you open the dictionary to the word "Sleeper" - there is a picture of this car. IMO YT's best true sleeper. Just started watching your channel so I don't know what else you have covered, but my first impression is this. You absolutely understand the sleeper concept, and have built a car that will fool most high-buck idiots on the street. But sleepers are designed to deceive on the street for $$$ - which leaves me wondering,...
@dragginwagon406
@dragginwagon406 3 жыл бұрын
In short, I appreciate sleepers, and have nearly always raced my cars on hard tires and always through the exhaust. This car was my first foray into big block territory, and I wanted to recreate the 11.47 @ 117 I could run with my ‘81 Malibu wagon on 275/60-15 Dunlops, but without the nitrous. From the moment I dropped in the 467, I realized that if I geared the Monte like the wagon, the stock tires would stand no chance of hooking up. I also realized I loved being able to drive the car everywhere I raced it, driving it 190 miles twice a year, for the last two years to attend test and tune sessions with Stock and FAST Class racers at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mi. I would eventually run 12.92 @ 108.96 with the 467 spinning the 2.56 gears, but knew there was more hook left at the line than the 1.98 60’ would indicate. Anyhow, I read, and read a lot…Chevelle forum, Speed-talk, Class Racer, etc. and you begin to understand who knows which way is really up. About that time, Mark Jones started producing his “How to Build a 620 hp 467” videos and in the series, he explained how to port the oval port heads. Somewhere between long chats with Mark and inspiration from BobC’s post on V8Buick.com, the idea was hatched to “out-Buick a Buick,” and to run 11.50s with 2.56 gears, stock stall converter on 225/70-15 Cooper Cobras. Along the way to running 11.84 @ 119.27 (best so far, but hope to run 11.50s this summer), I’ve realized the car is more fun on the street than I could’ve imagined. It does not require sticky tires to run a respectable number or keep it from spinning all over the place. Don’t get me wrong, the car can spin the tires uncontrollably , but the line between a 110 mph wheel speed burnout and “hooking up” is easy to navigate. Because I dream of becoming class legal for FAST Class racing, I’ve kept the car as close to factory stock appearing as possible. Well that, and the fact the car is a great conversation piece at cruise-ins and car shows, as well as the fact I have trouble spending money on parts which won’t make the car faster. Alas, I do long for a flapper cowl-induction hood but have been able to fight the urge. Over the course of my 496 build, and getting the car closer to right, I’ve become friends with Mark, and he’s fully on board with this type of build, saying “he’s said it could be done for years.” He’s also said that he’d be surprised if my build didn’t start a trend of people building drivable hot rods, without high stall converters and deep gears. Last March, I ordered an engine built by Mark (aka, VortecPro) which should deliver the goal this summer, if I can get it off the line in a respectable manner. I’m sure I left out a few points, but this about sums it up,

I may try some brackets this summer, but I’m not a fan of racing open header cars when I don’t have a tach and traction can be sketchy. It is cool to see my car run with dedicated race cars and post similar times (albeit with much higher mph).

Most people broke their bracket trying to run the Rambler down...... Money brackets are all psychological.

I love the old Monte Carlos, especially the 70 model, I owned two 71s when I was younger, my first two cars actually, 1 was a parts car though. They aren't that much different than the Chevelle of the same years, a bit longer and more luxurious but still very capable drag car, your engine had got to be incredibly strong with the airplane gears and still pull 11s in a 1/4, thats amazing.

Wow. 400 putting down with plenty rpm to spare well into the 140-150 range. Motor has a huge bore and stroke. Torque gets that hog fown easy. I hade 2.29 in a 1980 monte upgraded to 350 w/700R4. Would never run out of gear Speedo buried in 2nd gear with 2 to go. A bit shaky and windy pass 100. Never got to do a all out dig I'm all 4 gears. Run out of unimpeded space

I don’t advocate OD transmissions for a few reasons: 1. They rob power 2. My engine makes ample torque, he deep first gear would cause traction issues 3. The spread between first and second 4. They’re complex and expensive- this car is about simplicity. (I do consider the electric fans too complex as well but find their practical advantage is too high to ignore).
