Great stuff. Especially the part about going 30 plus estimates and 0. Its so much easier for someone to just quit instead of moving forward but its better to continue getting closer to a' yes you got the job'

I’m so happy to have found you! I ran a large commercial and residential painting company for an absent out of state owner. I didn’t know he was going to be absent and scared every time there was a mistake. I learned from all of my mistakes and moved forward. Mistakes are just a lesson on the next project. The owner unfortunately did not understand this and just kept making the same mistakes over and over. I eventually left and started my own company. I sold my house and out 40k into it. It’s been a year now and I’m on my way 🙌🏻💪🏻. I pride myself on keeping my word and exceeding expectations. I really enjoyed your video, thank you so much.

You've got an excellent way of making your message crystal clear. The "not chasing money" aspect is 100 percent correct. In our junk removal business we were good at that. Like you after a few years when we were making pretty good money we took on some new construction clean up work. Didn't know how to price it so we priced it what everyone else did. Lost $40,000 in six weeks... Embarrassing as hell but we learned from it and have never made a similar mistakes since.

Thank you...very informative..after having a small, residential cleaning business for the past 16 years, I want to start a panting business but I only wanted to do exterior re-paints...I was told that I would have to do interior as well but as a new painter starting out I wanted to minimize my risk and failure by only doing exterior which like you said, is pretty hard to mess up and if I do, it's not a catastrophe such as an interior could be...Thank you for confirming my idea....

A caution about exterior, especially unpainted concrete patios. None of my jobs failed. However, some re-paint jobs I had to turn down because of peeling paint. Here is why I succeed when others fail, With the people that had peeling paint I asked, "did the painter start in the mourning and did he check the moisture level before starting?'. I would hear yes, they started in the mourning what do you by moisture level? Concrete retains a certain amount of water. It can look dry but if it rained the night before, it could have too much water in it. After you paint, that water still needs to evaperate and it will do so destroying your paint job. Also, concrete needs to cure. Concrete needs about 6 months curing time because of thee water used to make it. But thats in Florida, you're in Arizona with less humidity. RE: not the catastrophe such as interior: I painted a home, I was new and unlicensed. The house next door was being done by about 6 workers by a contractor, licensed and insured. I stopped by 6 months later to see if everything was copacetic. My job was good except on small area of a few inches of cedar that I failed to used an oil primmer (cedar wood needs an oil based primer). The house next door was peeling everywhere. The trim, the siding, the doors. It was obvious from 30 feet away. CATASTROPHE

@PaintingBusinessPro
@PaintingBusinessPro 5 жыл бұрын
We do interior now. For the first 3 years we focused almost exclusively on exterior. We also only got leads for exterior, mostly from door to door. So it was more about selecting our leads and how we got leads than turning customers down. I don't have a great sales book recommendation, unfortunately! We cover the entire sales process in our business training course though. So if you are running a business, I'd strongly recommend it! www.paintingbusinesspro.com/course

Great videos, I am wondering if you might have information to share with a young man who recently started a painting business, he seems to "chase the money", under promises the amount of time a job should take IE: (4 days, when its clearly 7 or 8) then blames his workers, and says yes to most anything asked of him, leaving his employees to do jobs they are not really qualified to do. A video dealing with these types of issue would be awesome.

The only problem is finding good subcontractors that will work for cheap most of the good painters either want too much or are already running their own company.
@PaintingBusinessPro
@PaintingBusinessPro 5 жыл бұрын
There are TONS of good subcontractors out there. You just have to be the person they want to work for... Because you have more consistent work, you pay better, and you treat them better. If you're the best person to work for, you get the best crews.

I get what you are saying and you are mostly. right, let me ask you the most important thing in this whole thing, HOW DO YOU GET ALL THOSE LEADS TO ESTIMATE????, you need a LOT of money to start!!! and a lot of money to keep it going until you see Profits with advertising taking a big chunk out of it. You are talking as if Clients were so easy to get. I have been in this business for 30 years, now, it seems only the large companies are the ones getting the jobs, otherwise you are competing with rediculous competition!!!
@PaintingBusinessPro
@PaintingBusinessPro 4 жыл бұрын
That's what I teach in my course. Some of your assumptions are wrong. Just because you've been in business 30 years does not mean you know everything. This is not an attack, just the truth. I teach a lot of small businesses to get a lot of leads right when they start their business WITHOUT fronting a lot of money up front for advertising. Some ways we do that: lead services, door to door, and networking. These 3 avenues can generate a lot of leads really early on. I have students who do over $500k in business in their first year, without a lot of money up front. This is exactly what I teach in my training programs.

@PaintingBusinessPro

Travel. Spend time with friends and family. Relax. Sleep. And also spend a little bit of time really preparing for the upcoming year, updating our business systems, doing year end meetings, etc... We don't set weekly goals. We set annual goals. We don't fight against the seasons. There just isn't nearly as much work happening during winter. You can work 40 hours a week in December to make the same amount of money that you make in 10 hours a week in July. So we just focus on working a little harder when "the getting is good" and chill out when it's not.

If you are doing a $40,000 project, it could cost you $20k-$40k to do the job and you might not get paid for 6-8 months. You could even lose more than that. If you can't afford this kind of "failure" don't do the project. Smaller jobs have smaller consequences. Keep it simple at first. Don't chase money. Does that clarify?
