In this video we demonstrate our successful trial using 4 and 6 bricks as the source of weight to create the pressure to fuel our converted two stroke engine/generator to run on biogas made from kitchen wastes. We also experiment with other ways of introducing lubrication oil into the engine. We are pleased to report that a weight of about 24 kilograms (about what an airplane allows you to carry in your luggage, so think a suitcase worth of weight) is enough to keep the generator running. Thus there is no need for any kind of pump or compressor such as we showed in the last video. That simplifies things a lot and makes home biogas electric generation more and more affordable and useful.

Nice job so far. I would have to recommend that you introduce a fail safe to your project. It is true that you are dealing with a small amount of gas, but you are sharing ideas. I believe you should include safety as a vital part of your design, in the event someone should use what you have learned and increase the scale.

I really love the video and your use of unconventional means to produce the gas. It shows the 'world' you don;t have to have a billion dollar corporation to design, construct and maintain sufficient gas production. The crude way of making this, makes it simple enough so a 'junk man' could make one from his back yard. Since I am no 'junk man' I need to acquire similar items from the scrap yard. Great video brother!

Thanks insAneTunA, you keep us going with your kind words! Thanks for the vote of confidence. Your experiments are an inspiration to me to! My next step is to see if the flashback arrestor is going to compromise engine performance by acting as a pressure restrictor, and how many more bricks it will take to compensate.

I have worked with lpg and gas regulators at my past work as a mechanic. I think that if you partially close the choke of the carburetor you will trick the regulator to feed more gas because a vacuum is needed to operate the diaphragms of the regulator more vacuum more fuel

You have done an excellent job. I make my comment with this experience, thank you;-) ...I lived about 18 years, 2 miles off the public electric lines. We used 4 solar panels with battery storage and a gasoline generator for backup. With only 4 solar panels, as the children got older, in the long, snowy winters we used the generator a lot. ...With about 70% of all the food that our 12 species of animals ate... coming out the rear, ready to make this fuel, our gasoline bill could have been lower.

Thanks so much masterix6! I just ran some trials using the tank of water so I can vary the pressure and it works great so long as the height of the telescoping gas container doesn't rise too high (at which point it bumps into the support cage; and if I remove that it will topple over).

I was praying things wouldn't explode on kitty. EXCELLLENT PROJECT. Here is a suggestion though. Try putting a tank of water on top of the gas cover to give a more even distribution of weight to replace the bricks. It also would allow you to continue adding on more pressure by allowing water to flow in!

Thanks d3adp001! We do have the trifuel conversion kit for the 4 stroke engine from propanedashgeneratorsdotcom and we will use it in Cairo next month -- it is, as you know, a lot easier to do the conversion (no carb drilling necessary) and of course the lubrication problem isn't there. But the 4 stroke costs 230 Euro while the two stroke cost 80 Euro and most third world engines are two stroke so we thought we'd give it a try! We want to figure a way to help the trash recyclers in Egypt.

Hi really good to see people doing this sort of thing, hope you get the oiler sorted out. You should not try to oil the engine through the plug hole because the oil is very important to the crank and con rod bearings, and this will not reach them.Maybe a 4 styroke would be better, you could pick an old one up on ebay for not much more than you spent on your oilers. Keep saving the planet.

When running propane in my 2 stroke bicycle motor I put on 2 carbs one which came with the gas regulator and the other smaller one came with the motor. I bought a Y spiter to allow 2 carbs and run an iol rich 12:1 in one and methane in the other compensate for the inability to mix oil with the gas phase methane. (A) carburetor- adjust oil+gasoline mix, (B) carburetor/regulator, C a way to mix the output A and B before intake. The gasoline acts a well distributed delivery method for lubrication with enough.

Very nobel effort tculhane. I however would not think of using biogas as direct feed for whatever engine. At least not without some high tech chemistry purification. I am very new to the field but so far I learned that biogas is comprised by many components. To what I learned it includes 30-40% CO2, 5-10 Hydrogen, 1-2% Nitrogen, plus what was mentioned as water vapors and some Hydrogen Sulphide traces. So I am thinking for usage for heating in a greenhouse or whatever heater or for just cooking.

I think it's best to redesign your bioreactor and try to put into consideration a higher H:D ratio. Also allow the process to run for a considerable length of time for enough gas to be produced, that way the gas pressure in the vessel will drive the delivery to the electric generator. I am also pretty sure that since you use bricks to hold the reactor lid, you lose some amount of gas produced thereby causing more harm than good, try sealing the lid completely.

Hi deiseldes1, we have successfully adapted and run a 4 stroke 6.5 HP engine/generator in Cairo using a 190 dollar kit from US Carburetion (in West Virginia) that took 15 minutes to install. 4 stroke engines, as you know, are self lubricating. However the water vapor in the biogas did make starting difficult as these engines are more finicky than 2 strokes. And we eventually broke the spring on the pull start trying to start it so many times. But 4 strokes are the way to go.

@dnndirty74 You are absolutely right, we don't need the regulator. In our trials in Egypt a couple of months ago we bypassed it completely. We keep it on the engine here in Germany and in Cairo in case we want to switch to an NG or propane cylinder, but don't need it at all for the biogas. Since it came with the kit from US Carburetion for trifuel use I just assumed we needed it at first, then discovered, nope, no need at all! Thanks for bringing that to the attention of those who may b watching

Black paint on the tank , a mirrored floor and side circumference cage, a glass ball on a pole at the top and center of the tank to redistribute the suns light equally around the mirror cage should boost some energy by quikening the release of the gasses. Sacred geometry of the positioned mirrors to center the Suns power should help the harmonics of the light to focus the heat to upwell the gas from the solids and liquids in the tank. Just thoughts.

From sites where it has ben used for cooking I could see some suggestions that water vapor can be removed by running it from bottom to top through a sealed tank half full of water. So you it woul buble and eventually the vapor would condensate within the water and then you catch it after bubling (or it might catch more vapor). It is also said that this removes some CO2 . Also they mentione that some steel whool put in the pipe would catch whatever components cause citchen pots to get burned.

Make the gas from the digester comes through the water, when you do so the impurities in the gas is reduced, in addition to this use a vehicle tyre (tube inside the tyre) to store the gas it will act as a pressure regulator and the water molucules if present in the gas will settle there..

You need pressure to move gas from the biogas digester, through your pressure regulator and to feed the electric generator. Pressure is weight or force / divided by an area. In Your case you are reporting that 24 kilograms of weight is giving you enough pressure but your missing over what area. For instance 24kg/km^2 vs 24kg/m^2 vs 24fg/cm^2 each result in very different pressures.

The bell system is able to be used in a better fashion by changing your design slightly. A tall bell that has a counter weight pull system to make the bell equal a low weight is great. When the bell is at its top (Full of methane) the counter weight is reduced and that pumps the gas into a storage container. This weight system can pump higher pressure and is capable of pumping through a filter for better gas. This give you a pumping station that allows tanks installed on equipment and such.

Hi Neomorpheus (is the name a reference to the matrix? I took the blue pill I think!). The answer to your excellent question is that the regulator is necessary for... for... for NOTHING. We thought we needed it but we don't. It comes in the kit for people using propane bottles with their gensets to lower the pressure. Then a regulator is needed. For biogas it isn't, so we have since removed it. Using a valve to regulate flow is the only thing we use now.
@tculhane
@tculhane 15 жыл бұрын
So what I've done is implemented your suggestion and then run a tube to let the gas go to a water displacement tank for storage so that the telescoping bell doesn't have to rise any higher. Will be posting a vid of it soon. Thanks again!

Rather than running a light bulb directly (which would be a terrible waste of the 2Kw the engine produces) we get approximately 45 minutes of electric generation out of every days' production of 1 cubic meter of gas. This is enough to charge deep cycle batteries (even more reliably than 5 hours of photovoltaics) which can then be used to run several bright light bulbs for several hours. So in a "disaster" it is quite a robust solution. Meanwhile, we use our gas every day for cooking.

Hi Engineeringtube, Good question. Some biogas does leak out from the gap but it is such a small quantity that we can't even ignite it with a lighter moving around the perimeter. It appears that the methanogens cluster under the gas collection tank where true anaerobic conditions prevail, and it may be that other facultative aerobes in the area where the gap is are metabolising feedstock into CO2. Also, because the feedstock enters the center of the tank the sides may be depleted.

In later videos I switched to using a 4 stroke. The oiling the 2 stroke issue made it seem unfeasible for most people so since a 4 stroke is self lubricating it is much much better. Experts...please advise I am from a rural area in Pakistan. When we built our house there was no sewerage system in that area. The way locals deal with the issue is to dig a deep well which is has brick walls and is sealed from top. Over the years it has built up with just human waste and water used in kitchen and toilets. Can it be turned into a biogas container? Its like 50 feet deep and it was made in 2006. By now I am sure more than half is filled.

You need a scrubbing system between the biodigester and whatever it is you use the gas for. Apart from methane, biogas also contains hydrogen sulfide, which, amongst other things, smells bad and is corrosive; moisture and carbon dioxide. You should run the gas through a water bath, so the carbon dioxide dissolves, and then through a scrubber, to remove hydrogen sulfide and moisture. For the scrubber, you can simply use a U-shaped pipe, stuffing steel wool in the ascending and descending portion of it (to remove hydrogen sulfide) and something like kitty litter pellets on the bottom, to absorb moisture. This should enable you to produce much purer methane, moisture and odor free, that won't corrode any metal components.
@tculhane
@tculhane 4 жыл бұрын
We appreciate the sentiment and have experimented with those approaches for the last ten years and determined that apart from running engines for our cooking and water heating uses it was unnecessary. We continue to use simple scrubbers for engines as you describe but no longer bother for the stove.

I live off grid and produce my own elect . Often folks that don't really get energy create no appreciable amount of usable energy. A case in point here is that you can't produce enough juice to power that 3/4hp garbage disposal. The best way to use your biogas ( after you have removed the hydrogen sulfide) would to burn it for heat as in cooking. Use solar PV for pc, radio etc, solar for heating bath water, biogas for cooking. In other words use the right technology for the right job.

uhmm ok another suggestion... compress the gas... I've been using fridge compressor for a long time and they can generate pressures of up to 35bars, are really robust and have decent flow (10L tank to 100psi in under 10 minutes)... Just attach the inlet tube to the reactor vessel and the output to a large LPG tank or propane tank... it would be a good idea to add that sulphur dioxide filter between the reactor and the compressor to increase its longevity

Six Bricks, at least you figured out that your regulator was holding back the pressure. Nat gas and propane are like only 5 or 2 psi after the regulator. A propane regulator is about 150 psi on the tank end. I wonder who much volume over time you get of gas. Also I tried to make methane with grass trimmings and things to no avail yet, so the particulars of your method of biological digestion to produce the gas would be interesting. Thanks WK.

Apples seem to produce more methane than any other fruit I've fermented in the past, so much so that I have to attach a gas mask filter to the airlock! When fermenting cider it's important to add trace minerals in order to achieve high attenuation. Have you tried adding other kinds of food scraps of diversify the nutrients available?

If you use your bricks to force your gas into a large tire inner tube you will have the pressure you need because the inner tube will expand as gas is pushed into it !!!! Also they make for great storage!!! If you are using the regulator it shouldn't matter about the number of bricks as long as you observe the regulator inputs !!! Also you can just feed it into the machine without the regulator using a ball valve to regulate the input into the carb!!

Excellent video guys...! It's cool to see you getting a 2 stroke to run on methane...! I wonder if somehow running oil via a second line through the engine could be done simply.. I heard somewhere that 2 strokes are essentially Diesel engines, not sure, but if so..( it'd certainly explain the mixtures they use.. I guess..) it might not neccesarily be needed to run ( for short times..) both oil and methane... What if you had a 2 way valve on fuel line, and ran biodiesel or SVO...( cooking oil ) and the gas alternately say 30 minutes each,..? I mean, you could, because ( assuming til run on bd/ SVO ) then you could be sure it's getting lubrication some of the time at least, right..? A 4 stroke diesel, would Definitely run on SVO ect, and I am guessing might have less issues with lubrication, too... ( might still be a problem at the " top " end of the engine, but smaller volumes might cover this risk..) ( sorry, not a mechanic, so I am only going by what I heard.. ) Anyhow, congratulations on getting to run, and good luck to you guys.

You can use any 4 stroke engine. The easiest thing to do is buy a trifuel kit for 190 dollars from US Carburation, it takes 20 minutes or less to mount between the air filter and the carburator. Done.

I was wondering if you could get a louder generator, I can barely hear that thing.

Hey, have you researched using inner-tubes to harvest the methane, and then also pressurize the system? This gives enough pressure that you can effectively use the regulator

I was considering building a similar project in which the methane output from the digester could be converted to energy/electricity. In the video you are using some type of generator that functions off of the methane gas output. What is this generator and is it possible to purchase one commercially? If so, where would I be able to purchase one?

It doesn't -- I injected the oil in the spark plug hole. So I had to abandon using my two stroke because of the hassle and uncertainty and bought a four stroke instead which works fine. People wrote and told me ways to get oil in to the two stroke but i never had time to experiment. I tried an inline oiler but it didn't seem to work.

great going - german precision- i am sure you will figure out a way to smooth things out. thanks i learnt a french word " ricolage"? A similar word exists in India -Jugaad- but i hope it soon turns to something more sophiticated.;

I never could figure out why you have the garburater in one area and carry it to the digester why not have it close and plumb it to the digester

its good thinking But you can do this for better result : bump the gas into a water filter first then into a air compressor(you can use a refrigerator motor as compressor ) into a gas tank and after that you will get very good result >>> keep in mind its not a sempel operation an you need to take all the safety majors befor doing it

just use the two stroke carburetor to feed the engine it's oil. rejet the carburetor to suit the engines needs. if you can't find jets the small. fill the jet with epoxy. then find jet drills and step up the size of the drill till the spark plug looks right.

Marcel, I'll get you some Psychrophiles when I come back from Alaska in January. I'll bring them to Germany in a bag of mud, then you gotta figure out how to get them across the Channel (I find British cutoms to be hell -- they interrogated me for half an hour for bringing a small guitar in to the country asking "are you going to try to illegally busk with this?" What?! :)
