I can survive just fine without the UBI, but I can't stand how polarized our politics is, UBI is the only way to shut those leftists down. Do I see UBI as the ideal morale political system? Absolutely not. But it doesn't hurt to support a political system that can shut leftists down, without having to be a burden for me, by also giving me the basic income.

I almost cried when he talked about how the current programs actually decentivize going back to work because you lose your benefits. My mom has been on disability for over a decade for some tough mental health issues. It took her over a year to get approved for disability benefits. Social security lets her work a certain amount without it affecting her benefits. She's tried on a couple occasions to work, because she WANTS to work. But then her jobs gave her too many hours and social security started making a bunch of fuss and my mom got scared. She got scared that now, since my father passed away... that if she lost her benefits due to work and then had another mental breakdown, she'd be without income for another full year going through the disability approval process again. People need to understand that FEAR keeps so many of these folks on welfare from picking themselves up. So many people on disability WANT to work, WANT to contribute, but our current system threatens them for working rather than encouraging them to work. UBI is the way to go!

Bad Daily Choices over a person's lifetime Creates This. Freedom comes with a challenge. Most people without income is their own Fault.

@Mandy Last I just had to break out the shove in order to clean up all your crap. You deliberately sidestepped the real issue. So she never saved money and planned for the future and now you want to Vomit on all the hardworking Americans who do save for the Future. How dare you put the blame on Us. Shame on you for looking for excuses. There's no justifiable reason to start another program like UBI accept to suck free money off the backs of hardworking Americans. If you are counting on your job with no backup income you will be the next loser. Save 10 Percent of every check,and this goes away.
@gbuz57895 жыл бұрын
You think giving people $1,000 a month will incentivize people to work? Look at all the people not working now because they don't have to due to welfare. UBI will make it worse. I don't think people are afraid. They do the calculations and see it is better not to work. If your mother can't work then we should support her. If she can work, which you say she could, then we should not support her or partly support her. If she has a mental breakdown (sorry for that) then we can help her. It should be a balance of help, not a blank check.

The resources that will allow a greater portion of the population with the right talents to throw up a middle finger at their employers and start new successful enterprises. If I were in charge, we would make UBI 2000 per month instead and simultaneously abolish minimum wage-- REALLY incentivizing new small business. In short, we want to super charge the markets by making high quality universal single payer healthcare, implementing a universal basic income, de-regulating many entrapreneurial/small-business driven industries, and getting money out of politics in order to get rid of anti-competitive regulations that benefit big monopolies WHILE ALSO going for greater consumer protections to end this Opioid crisis and get human health on track for greater productivity. Andrew should, on the trail, be careful about saying "1000 into the pockets of American families", because it's actually "1000 into the pockets of American families PER ADULT"-- which for most families, means 2000 a month; and for broken families, gives a pretty big incentive to remake a household and keep life partnerships together. Also gives singles an incentive to live together connectedly and not in isolation. All of which, is a benefit to social wellbeing, and the psychological well-being of our citizens.
@Unclejamsarmy6 жыл бұрын
Steven Chong - Creative Corner interesting argument, but that incentive always exists for most people and there’s also an incentive that’s more historically prevalent of women needing to depend on men economically, keeping them together, and men using money as a way to attract mates so I think it’s an equally plausible argument that it would increase splits and singles. I think you’re probably right that it would increase connectedness etc because I think it would be so positive for many people’s general well-being as individuals.
@SteveScapesYT6 жыл бұрын
@@Unclejamsarmy UBI is just an important piece, it's not a complete solution to figuring out how to organize a human-centric society for our new age of automation. There are major issues in social outcomes that have to do with the psychology of men and women-- we can debate about how much is human nature, and how much is socialized culture, but the reality is that while individuals can change their behaviors society as a whole cannot change the reality that women don't want to marry men who make less money than them, and men do not maintain psychological well-being without the acknowledgement of their wives and communities as bread winners. So when we automate away all the manufacturing jobs and leave hospitals and schools as the only full-time employers in many rural communities, we shouldn't be surprised that families fall apart. BUT humans are unchanged in being happier within the traditional family model, and society benefits as well... this is a major social structure problem that neither the left nor right are currently equipped to find answers to, and the private sector has zero incentive to do so. BUT... even if UBI is not a final solution, I would argue it's almost inarguable that it's a needed step in the right direction.
@Unclejamsarmy6 жыл бұрын

Who benefit from UBI? My take: -Citizens who do not work and do not qualify for welfare or unemployment benefits. -Citizens who do work at home taking care of kids, sick, and elderly etc. -Full time volunteering citizens. -Full time amature gardeners who love their backyard. etc. -20 million college students. -$1000 will have a big positive impact on low income citizens. -Citizens on welfare will see less impact increase benefits are capped at $1000.

Kim Sun Most welfare recipients will likely prefer the UBI, as there is no stigma attached, complicated check ins/case workers, it’s just straight cash to use as they like. They also aren’t encouraged to stay poor, like with some welfare programs you have to make under a certain amount and have nothing saved!! So it’s better in a lot of ways

I'm a Republican AND a Trump supporter but I'm 100% behind UBI. Jobs will move to more technical and more creative; but the starving artist is more than just a stereotype. To get great at something machines can't do takes time (10,000 hours). UBI gives time to those who are young and displaced workers attempting to gain new skills. It also gives Americans an opportunity to get off of 21st century indentured servitude (AKA banks and credit lenders). Likely, it'll help low-middle class increase their income earlier in their lives, meaning greater contributions to society, the economy and ultimately charity. One thing he didn't mention was that the extra $1,000 in the hands of someone who is doing 'well enough' means more disposable income IE tax revenue. However, I do disagree with his system of paying for UBI. We need a national sales tax in lieu of an income tax. This will put the onus businesses to pay the taxes (that they collect from citizens), decrease the amount of funding needed for the IRS, increase the amount taxes that the rich pay and eliminate loopholes (citizens, illegal immigrants, tax sheltering, international visitors, tax brackets, etc.). We'd need a NST in the low 20's to equal our current tax base, but one of 30% would both give us a UBI start, as well as contribute to decreasing the national deficit.

Cash for clunkers (using the republican principle of trickle down economics), a god awful ACA and being the first minority are the only things I'll remember about Obama's 8-year tenure. When he dropped cash for clunkers I immediately thought he was the right man for the job, but he focused too much on ACA and it hurt the medical system as a whole.

UBI is a bold concept that I believe can actually work if implemented correctly. Yang explains very well how this is not socialism and how it’s a natural extension a strong capitalism. However, how it is implemented will dictate it success. I’m not excited about a VAT tax which is regressive and affects the same people that UBI is supposed to help. The consumer, a.k.a. the average American, will be spending more for everything they buy. If we implement a VAT, you have to get rid of sales tax and other consumer taxes. The source for this Needs to come from corporations and the ultra wealthy as it once did back in the 1950s and 60s. Further, with everybody getting a basic income that is in line with what Social Security pays, the Social Security fund then should be incorporated into this funding. And nothing has been said about whether retirees can draw SS and UBI as well. Throw in welfare and about 100 billion from defense spending and we have more than enough. Another point to consider is something Yang mentioned in another interview that you be I will not be taxable. However he did say that if your income and UBI lift you to the next tax bracket then you will be taxed higher. In this case, I think UBI phones need to be treated as insurance distributions which are non-taxable. If you receive any insurance settlement the money is not taxable nor is it necessary to report to the IRS. UBI should treated the same if it is truly going to have the same effect. Remember, social Security used to be nontaxable income until Ronald Reagan‘s first term. That was a betrayal to the senior citizen community. Lastly, I like that he calls it a “freedom dividend“ because it’s certainly more marketable to anti-communist patriots and rabid capitalist who will no doubt the ride this as socialism in its purest form. It is these people who stand to bear the tax burden for this whether they recognize this as a solution to how our Economic system need something to balance technology illuminating our jobs.

Wow, this interviewer is trying his hardest to push the narrative that the economy is great, citing the unemployment rate and other bullshit indicators. He actually said the numbers don't show any problem when they clearly do. This is why the mainstream media is so utterly hated by most Americans. Yang's vision is quite impressive. He has clearly thought this through and has a solid plan to implement it. I'm all for it. Also, those of you who think this is the only policy he's running on need to check out his website. He literally has more policy proposals than any other candidate.... www.yang2020.com/policies/

@dlg54855 жыл бұрын
@@MrSatan27-1 To clarify, I believe the news media should approach everything from a position that is antithetical to power, the status quo and the establishment. But the truth is, mainstream media is always deferential to the status quo. They never question establishment politicians about the cost of cutting taxes for the wealthy or constantly increasing defense spending, for example. The MSM is never more aggressive than they are with progressives. Why? Because they are paid to propagate the bullshit narrative that progressive policies are extreme, even though the opposite is true. Most of the big progressive proposals (Medicare for All, $15 min wage, raising taxes on the ultra wealthy, etc) are supported by a vast majority of Americans, which means those are the moderate policies, not the incremental BS the establishment pushes. Universal basic income was actually almost passed by Congress in 1971 under REPUBLICAN leadership, so it's obviously not a radical idea.

I'm more conservative/right wing but this is the kinda guy and ideals that the DNC needs to shift focus to and empower if they seek to win any more elections. He doesn't fear monger. He presents opportunity. This is a perfect model, not just for democrats but politicians as a whole. I don't exactly agree with everything and I have my concerns about others but I like the direction. Presenting actual ideas. Investment in the American people is really something I can get behind because a more able and innovative population presents a more powerful country. Allowing families to invest more in their families is another thing I like. I'd argue that a wage/profit ratio would be better than a universal basic income. It really costs nothing for the tax payer and it basically insures that the gap between employer and the employed doesn't widen to extreme levels. This would also allow more motivation for the employed because as they do better, the employer does better, which means more profit, which means employees actually see increases in their wages when they do better work instead of seeing the same 7.25 an hour every other week.

War for jobs is simply a lost cause. Automation will simply dominate society and it will be simply impossible for all working age people to get jobs, and this is coming from a software developer. Heck, I don't think the software industry will create enough jobs to support everyone as we are very good at automating ourselves. You can try to make jobs which will be low quality labor(should really be automated) or bullshit government bureaucratic jobs. We are reaching point where those who work are so productive that there will be simply be less jobs. I think simply handing people money to spend is a great and simple solution to this whole issue.
