Hi everyone,
In this video I’ll show you how to run LINUX on the new Apple M1 ARM processor, tell you which virtualisation softwares are already available and how far can we go with M1’s processing power.
My machine is a MacBook Air M1 with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD, 7-GPU cores.
I have installed and prepared Parallels, 5 virtual machine and also included WINDOWS 10 ARM which I downloaded using my Insider’s Preview program account.
So, the machines shown are:
1. WINDOWS 10 ARM
2. UBUNTU SERVER 20.04 LTS
3. UBUNTU 21.04
4. FEDORA 34
5. DEBIAN 10
I hope you enjoy my video. Please comment below and give me your feedback on your own experiments.
Best Regards,
Rodrigo Matias

Loved the demo. Still, I have to think that I'd prefer to run Linux on inexpensive bare metal without the pricey Apple hardware and software.

Thanks for you comment! In fact bare metal is the best for high performance. I use virtual machines on an everyday basis for training puprposes, to test new scenarios and to trial stuff without compromizing my bare metal machines. Also, I'm loving my macbook Air with +20hours of battery power and no fan making any noise. So, exploring ARM architecture has been a pleasure so far. Regards!

So Im thinking on purchasing a m1 mac but i have no idea if it is good enough (or compatible enough) for the programs i need for school, do u think it is able to keep up with it?(im going for software engineering), thank u so much and keep up the good work!

You're right! Portuguese! What I can say now is that M1 CPU is enough for everything I do, even using Final Cut Pro for video editing and encoding final video. I upgraded from a MBPRO mid 2014 to a MBAIR M1 and it is brutal the difference. Glag you envjoyed. thanks!

Hi Nuno, Yes! Parallels optimized their tool for M1 and performance looks great right now, as the video shows. I didn't even pushed it to the very limits. "Only" 5 machines at the same time. Regards!

Linux on M1 is still being worked on, not ready for "normal use" (AFAIK)
@mw7967
@mw7967 3 жыл бұрын
Although your points are certainly valid, the fact still remains that because the M1 is a custom arm chip from Apple, users cannot run either Linux nor Windows natively. Parallels and virtualization is still the only available option; this means that whenever Apple decides to drop support for the M1 chip in the future, your only option is to upgrade...planned obsolescence in a nutshell. If you're planning to run Windows or Linux, you're far better off buying a non apple branded computer, regardless of the supposed advantages of the M1 versus either intel or AMD. Everyone praises the MacBook and never mentions the fact that without Apple continuing to support it with software updates, the consumer has zero ability to repurpose any M1 mac with a native Linux or Windows installation, once Apple support ends.

Bruh. The m1 chip will be the future for a long time for Apple. They aren't gonna drop support anytime soon.
@mw7967
@mw7967 3 жыл бұрын
@@zoriiginalx7544 be that as it may, and with all due respect, that's not the point. Again, your assessment that Apple "will support the M1 for a long time, and that the M1 is the future"is anecdotal at best and wishful thinking at worst. The fact still remains; consumers ability to use the M1 with the latest operating system and software is entirely in Apple's contol. Once Apple stops support, your only option is to upgrade. Factually speaking, consumers don't have any real assurances how long Apple will support its custom SOC into the future, because Apple refuses to publish product End Of Life dates. Consumers must wait for Apple's developer conference to find out if there device will receive the latest software/version. That's simply unacceptable. Conversely, both Microsoft and Google are transparent, as it relates to OS support. Google supports Chromebook for a minimum of 8.5 years from manufacture date. Microsoft supports windows versions for no less than a decade from release date. In short, my original point remains valid.

@@mw7967 so there's no hope for getting windows and linux to run natively on m1?
@marcoalff

@@mw7967 It can be a strange fire against a successful platform. At home we can still use MacOS perfectly on a MacBook Pro 2009 and that is a pretty old hardware.
@mw7967
@mw7967 2 жыл бұрын
@@dominant2576 according to Microsoft, native windows on the M1 won't happen ever. I hope running Linux will come one day, but as of now, virtualization still remains the best option. I have more hope for native Linux, but the days of running Windows natively on a Mac are effectively over.

Hi, Type 2 virtualization code runs on the CPU. Resources are allocated for it. You don't have Full CPU for it, but you have the percentage of cpu power allocated for it. Check my new video about VMware Fusion Tech Preview and you will see a 7core virtualization reaching 6087 benchmark which is close to the 7500 the M1 has with its 8 core. Always remember that virtualization is extremely useful to make isolated tests on OS and APP wihtou compromising the host OS of the machine. It is dynamic and equally reliable. Cloud computiing with VPS uses type 1 VMs everyday. Regards!

@@linuxtechschool4841 yes i know but type 1 hypervisors are nicer and running Linux natively is better for privacy and safety if you know what you are doing

Hi, The purpose of the video is to show how it runs on M1 this way. Of course, there are other ways. But these were the first to come up when everybody put their hands on the M1 and arm64 distros. I'm sure we will have the oportunity to test more different solutions on these Apple ARM cpu in the future! Thanks for watching.
NEVER install these programs on your PC... EVER!!!
