Amazing work to put the camera down and focus on holding it together and finish. Very pleased for you mate. A challenge that seems to get overlooked is completing these events solo. Having no partner to keep you going, no friends to push you, or the opportunity for you to motivate them. It's crippling in it's own right, especially after you've just had a huge mental block come in like damaging your foot. Well done mate, hope for a speedy recovery

Ryan, kudos for you for finishing. I have a similar drive to just complete anything I start even to the detriment to my knees. My first 200km brevet event with my longest previous ride being 100km was exactly that. Knees dying at 150km, 175km was even worse. Had been riding solo in the rain for 75km by that point. Sat at a bus stop contemplating calling home for a pickup. I finished, and called home for a ride with only 5km ride to the house. Healed up and rode some more. This last weekend I had a 200km zwift event. Done it in the past, even done 250km with little problems. 160km I quit. Had enough. I let the gremlins get in my head and win. Still wishing I just stopped for a bit and got back on to finish, but what's done is done. Good on you bud, keep it up!

‘Expect the unexpected.’ I left my Vaseline in my drop bag at 50km. At 51 km I thought: why do my inner thighs sting? Had a look - terrible chafing! First time in my life. Borrowed lip balm (!) from a kilt wearing Scot called Ross; Vaseline from another runner called Ben and anti chafe cream from a group of younger runners. Made it to the next checkpoint and medic. Tubs of Vaseline and sudocreme were acquired and applied regularly. But my word that sudocreme gets everywhere! Also barely ate for the last 6 hours. Death marched the final 6km and had a lie down in the medical tent for half an hour. Burger and chips revived me. I was very proud of my problem solving skills mid race because that chafing could easily have forced me to quit. Expect the unexpected 100%!!

I heard that stone needed stitches after being kicked so hard 🤣 Seriously, it's incredibly impressive completing that distance (and in that time) after hammering your toe so badly.
