Thanks Robbie Well explained I switched to a running sinker rig many years ago and I reckon I caught more fish But In very fast water I reckon the paternoster rig is best: caught most of my bigger cod have been caught on Paternoster rig -- about 6 years ago fished the Murray at Mathoura a few carp on Running sinker rig we switched to a Paternoster rig and we caught 20 legal Murray Cod in 300 meter stretch of river in 4 hours Will never forget that day

Thanks Peter. Sounds like an awesome fishing trip mate. They're both effective, but I would imagine that strong current would keep the bait off the bottom and exposed in the open, easy for the fish to see.

@@robbiefishing Thanks Robbie for your reply I should have added the current there is usually very strong because the river is narrow compared to the lower reaches. Both rigs have their purpose as you have well explained may be you should have been a school teacher Well done

Good day rob.. Nice and informative, and each rig has its merits, But I was always told keep it simple and your problems will be simple lol..for our spices I favour the running lead... but if livebait fishing the paternoster comes into it's own... But mate great presentation . Hope your all well and and in good form.... 😎🇬🇧

I'm in Germany now and always fish for Perch (Redfin) with the Paternoster rig, 1 or 2 hooks depending how snaggy it is, but everyone I know or see here usually uses running lead rigs. I grew up in Adelaide and the Paternoster has just been my go to forever - old habits ay. I often fish my second rod actively with a thin drop-shot sinker and lighter hook leader in case of a snags - Drop-shotting with worms often helps to find the fish fast. Thanks for sharing all of your videos Robbie

it has to be said the paternoster can be really good in the salt especially when you have alot of crabs around that can steal or even bury your bait with a running sinker, it is really frustrating when you lose a live baitfish to a mudcrab. Both are good and they are my go to rigs and it is totally upto the conditions of your particular fishing spot as to which is best.

I use Circle hooks and King kahle hooks when I’m bait fishing, king kahle hooks are good for the fact you can still strike but they also 9 times outa 10 will hook the fish in the mouth, and Circle hooks are good if you’re not paying much attention, and they from my experience have always hooked the fish in the mouth, I like both hooks and I reckon that more people should try them because they’re excellent hooks

@@robbiefishing one thing you gotta remember to do when you bait up circle hooks is to always leave space between the point and the shank of the hook, that way the hook doesn’t just glance off any flat edges in the fish’s mouth

@@robbiefishing Put a small ring or swivel (rings work better) on the main line, free to run along the line. Tie a leader to this with the sinker on it. Tie another small ring to the end of the mainline to tie the leader to the main line. This also acts as the stopper for the running ring. When you pull the rings together, you want the sinker length longer than the hook length. This acts like the paternoster but allows the line to run when you get the strike. Very good for weedy areas with shy fish. Another one I like is to use a dropshot weight with the swivel on the sinker and just run it free on the mainline above a ring to leader. Great to hold a bait on sand flats.
