Running the 2018 Marine Corps Marathon while helping push Kim, a wheelchair-enabled athlete, to her first marathon finish!
The 2018 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., was unlike any other race I've run. Running with The Ability Experience and The Kyle Pease Foundation, myself and two other runners paired up to push our badass new friend Kim to the finish line of her first marathon and get her that medal! All told, nearly 100 runners and enabled athletes from both organizations showed up to race; we even had a pair qualify for Boston!

It's content like this that deserves to go viral and get millions of views. I am a Marine Corps veteran myself and this act of kindness made me tear up... I'm sure she will remember this for the rest of her life... I am asthmatic, and can't run more than a few feet before feeling like I'm going to die, but you certainly have my support, amazing! Dear KZbin, get your act together and start promoting content that actually matters, content that helps to create a happier world, and people selflessly engaging in kind acts for one another.

Thanks for saying that Phillip, I appreciate it. This is actually one of the very few race videos I personally rewatch; her happiness was just infectious the whole day. Kim was amazing. I never really captured it on video, but she was helping pace us, giving us nutrition, and just generally chatting all day. All three of us had low moments during the race, but she was the best cheerleader ever. I'm lucky to have gotten to be involved with it. I fully intend to do more of this sort of thing. At the start of this year (before everything hit) I was looking into how I could start guiding in half/full distance triathlon. I'm certainly willing to push a chair, but my hypothesis is that there are (just numbers wise) fewer triathletes who could guide a VI athlete than runners who could push a chair. Still trying to make that happen.

Absolutely! And oh man, Kim was absolutely great. She had just the constantly best mood. Everytime we asked her if she wanted anything, just got a "nope, I'm good! 🙂" I would love running with her constantly. Such great motivation to keep going.

So is it harder to run behind a wheel chair? I want to know because i really want to help someone else experience what its like to be on the course. I run a 10 min pace not sure if i would be a good canadit.

Yeah man, you should 100% do it! It's definitely harder, but not in super obvious ways. It's the speed changes that are particularly hard, as are downhills. Most uphills on typical road courses aren't too bad, and you can just lean in and push a bit. Downhills are hard because the chair is trying to pull away from you, and that's not something you typically experience while running. It's tough trying to slow the chair down while also running forward. Next, the posture you adopt while pushing a chair is different than what you have while normally running. Not necessarily harder, but uncomfortable. If you have people to swap out with, it really helps to give your back a break. I suspect you'd be fine though. None of us had done it before and we all got through it. There's a learning curve, for sure. Serious suggestion: Get a air horn or clown squeezy horn or something. It's exhausting yelling at people for hours. People really crowd in and run just 1-4 feet in front of the chair; you just outright can't stop in that sort of distance, so you're constantly telling people to give room.
