In 2012, Jared Campbell decided to run up and down Salt Lake City’s Grandeur Peak for 24 hours, to raise money for air quality advocacy work. The following year, a few friends joined in. The next year: even more. After 11 years, Campbell’s solo project has morphed into Running Up For Air: a worldwide movement with dozens of races, hundreds of runners and tens of thousands of dollars raised around the globe. This is a story about how running builds community that can jump-start change far beyond the trails. For more information about RUFA and how you can get involved, please visit: pat.ag/YT/RUFA...

About Patagonia:
At Patagonia, we appreciate that all life on earth is under threat of extinction. We’re using the resources we have-our business, our investments, our voice and our imaginations-to do something about it.

Those opening low light shots are simply amazing. I can't believe we have digital sensors that can shoot that clean at night.

My ten year old, then five year old, suffered badly through the winter in Utah. After moving to an area that doesn’t trap air like in the SLC valley, he’s improved drastically.

we moved to SLC 3 years ago and it was SHOCKING how bad the air was. WE ended up leaving after 2 years and moving back to WI. The long term affects on us is just too important.

I was in Salt Lake City in 2022 during a severe period of inversion and I felt so powerless and hopeless. Great to see that this push for change is happening

I switched to nasal breathing rather than through the mouth. Its quite a difference. NO flu for 3 years now. As a 59 yo dude. Ya'll should get into ebikes on a big scale in the cities. I rode 29 miles today on my ebike to get groceries. No driving!

I love this. As a life long resident of Salt Lake and having raise a son here in THIS AIR it definitely strikes deep. I spent a lot of time in our mountains and deserts hiking, BC skiing, biking and climbing and enjoy the occasional suffer fest. But have to say, as person not at all inclined to run anywhere (unless chased by something fearsome) I have only watched the RUFAs from a distance and worry much of our population is in the same boat (or fog). I wonder if there is a way to engage and inspire a broader swath of people to get involved? Maybe we need many "(blanking) up for air" events (biking, golfing, boating, walking, climbing, skiing, pickle-balling, etc). Your point of a "hard thing" that gleans buy-in an drives home the idea that a first step leads to success is awesome. Maybe it could work for us non-rapidly-moving-folks as well 😁? Anyway, inspiring work you have done. Gives me hope. Thanks

I like your thinking and agree more outdoor activities can be added to raise the awareness. I'm a RD at RUFA Tiger Mountain and know they once had Climbing Up For Air. Not sure why that didn't happen this year. I'll bring it up at our next meeting. I lived in the Wasatch for over 40 years and watched as that inversion grew into a monster it is today. Stay healthy!!!

Thank you, all. Keep turning negatives into positives. Too many vulnerable people suffer badly due to the damn inversion.

Where can I find information on how the funds are utilised to tackle this problem? The RUFA website doesn't have any reports or information, nor the Patagonia site. I feel like part of this narrative is missing?

Hey there! The funds that were generated by the participants of these events were given to environmental non profits, of the participants choosing, that have a focus on improving air quality. Hope that helps a bit, let us know if you have any other questions!

Hi Kelsey-Each RUFA race choose 1 or 2 local non-profits that are working on air quality issues in their area. In UT, we support Utah Clean Energy and Breathe Utah. In Colorado, we support Conservation Colorado. In Montana, we support Climate Smart Missoula. In Washington, we support WA Conservation Action. Running Up For Air also recently became its own 501c3 so we are excited to take on some additional projects of our own with funds that are raised.

Scientists have been stating the facts and warnings about pollution and air quality, but because everything gets politicized, half the population thought it was a “hoax.” That is, until it comes into YOUR neck of the woods.

Did this film even mention the number one polluter in Salt Lake City? Same old, letting industry pay for the museums while destroying the air and blaming individuals.
@beeclimbing9954
@beeclimbing9954 5 ай бұрын
No where in this film did they "blame" individuals, they just suggested that anyone can make a difference with their actions. And did you not see them at a local civic meeting engaging with the city officials (or in your terms "industry")?

I agree they could have mentioned more about the bills in the current legislative session, but I think the point was for YOU to investigate what you can do in YOUR community. think globally - act locally
